This inspiring documentary, created with students from Rocky Boy Schools, offers an overview of how out-of-school activities nurture cultural identity, foster academic growth, and build stronger communities.
Through candid interviews and vibrant footage, students and educators share their experiences with the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) program. The film explores how these programs blend traditional Chippewa Cree teachings with modern educational practices, creating a unique and empowering environment for students to thrive.
"Sâkihitowin," a Cree word meaning "to love one another," embodies the spirit of the community and the transformative power of these after-school initiatives. The documentary highlights the program's academic benefits and emphasizes its role in preserving cultural heritage and strengthening community bonds.
This film is a collaborative project between the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI), MAPS Media Institute, and three 21st CCLC programs during the 2023-2024 school year. Students from Rocky Boy Schools participated in virtual and in-person workshops, learning valuable filmmaking skills while crafting a powerful narrative about their community's educational journey.
