In this Niggun, longing is combined with hope and confidence in a better future. This melody came to Chabad Hasidism from a non-Jewish source: the native tribes of the Caucasus Mountains. And it came with a story:
Around 150 years ago, indigenous communities still lived in the Caucasus Mountains. Unbothered, unbridled, untouched by the law of the Russian kingdom, they lived without any restrictions... Until the Czar expanded his kingdom, and decided to conquer them as well. Although he had a large army, and the tribes were few, the war in the mountains posed a great challenge to the Czar. Instead of making an effort to ascend to the mountains, he used a cunning trick that still works today - he lured them down. How does one bring people down from the mountains? Easily: with all kinds of gifts and benefits. He offered them land, houses, tax exemptions, attractive internet packages and the like, as is customary today… and it worked. They descended, one after the other. The tribe’s leader - Shamil - was exiled to the far east, and imprisoned.
There, in his prison cell, Shamil recalled the high mountains of his native land, the friends with whom he would ride through the wild prairies, the taste of freedom. And when he became overwhelmed with this desire for his home, for the mountains, to be as free as an eagle soaring across the sky… he would sing this melody. A melody which begins with longing, and ends in hope - that one day, he will finally return.
Hasids sing this melody because it is a parable for the soul, which is believed to have descended from spiritual spaces, from the highest heights, down to the body, in this world, with all its ‘benefits’. And in this so-called ‘prison’, sometimes the soul sings a tune of longing. At the same time, however, Shamil in his cell was more free than his brothers who forgot their true homeland, and became enslaved to the new, bourgeois life they received from the Russians. So too, does the soul remain free. Her tune, the brushstrokes of her imagined spiritual origins, are filled with hope and confidence in an ultimate return to her true home.
בניגון זה משולבים געגועים עם תקווה ובטחון לעתיד טוב יותר.
הניגון הזה הגיע לחסידות חב"ד ממקור שאינו יהודי אלא מהשבטים שבהרי קווקז.
זה ניגון שבא עם סיפור :
לפני מאה, מאה וחמשים שנה, חיו בהרי קווקז שבטים פראיים למחצה, שם חיו חופשיים כציפורי דרור.
בלי חוקי המלוכה, והגבלות התרבות. עד שהצאר הרוסי הרחיב את מלכותו, ורצה לכבוש גם אותם.
למרות שהיו לו צבא גדול, ואנשי השבטים היו מעטים, המלחמה בהרים מאד אתגרו את צבא רוסיה.
במקום להתאמץ לעלות אל ההרים נקט הצאר בתחבולה ערמומית שפועלת גם היום - הוא הוריד אותם למטה.
איך מורידים אנשים מההרים ? פשוט - עם כל מיני מתנות והטבות -
הוא הציע להם אדמות, בתים, פטור ממס, חבילות גלישה אטרקטיביות וכיו"ב כנהוג היום…
וזה עבד - הם ירדו אחד אחרי השני. את מנהיגם - שנקרא בשם שאמיל - הגלו לארץ גזירה.
שם, בתא המאסר, היה נזכר מדי פעם בפעם בהרים הגבוהים של נופי מולדתו,
בחברים איתם היה רוכב בערבות, כשלא היו לו ההגבלות של בית הסוהר.
וכשהיה מתעורר בתשוקה עזה להרים הגבוהים, שם היה חפשי כנשר בשמים
ושר ניגון זה שתחילתו געגועים וסופו תקוה שסוף סוף ישוב למקומו.
חסידים שרים ניגון זה כי הוא משל לנשמה אשר ירדה מהמרחבים הרוחניים,
מגבהי מרומים, אל הגוף בעולם הזה עם כל ההטבות שהוא מציע.
בתוך הכלא הזה לעיתים משמיעה הנשמה ניגון של געגועים.
יחד עם זאת שאמיל בכלאו היה מבחינות מסויימות יותר חופשי מאחיו ששכחו את מקומם האמיתי והשתעבדו לחיים החדשים והבורגניים שקיבלו מהרוסים.
כך גם הנשמה נשארת חופשית ומהניגון וציורי הדמיון של מקורה הרוחני
מתמלאת תקווה ובטחון לשוב למקומה האמיתי.
