  • ORANGE CITY, FL ( Florida TV) Blue Spring Florida Manatees State Park. One of the best places to see manatees in all of Florida. Florida TV takes an inside look as to why manatees flock here each year. And why people travel from around the world just to view these amazing creatures.
    We tag along with the “Save The Manatee” experts that show us how they track, save and count these sea cows. Save the Manatee Club was founded in 1981 by Bob Graham, former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator, and singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett. The Club was started with the mission to protect manatees and their habitat. Today, Save the Manatee Club is the world’s leading manatee conservation organization.
    BLUE SPRING STATE PARK
    Conservation measures can produce astounding results. In 1970, two years before Blue Spring State Park was established, researchers tracked 14 manatees in the spring run. By 2005, after years of park improvements and manatee protection efforts, wintering manatee numbers exceeded 200. By 2018, that number skyrocketed to a record 485.
    Besides sea cows, fish abound in the spring run, and these attract a variety of wading birds, ospreys, eagles and kingfishers. To see the park’s wonders, one can hike along the spring run or on the 4.5-mile Pine Island Trail. One can also launch a canoe or kayak, rent one at the park or take a guided riverboat cruise.
    Blue Spring State Park is a state park located west of Orange City, Florida in the United States. The park is a popular tourist destination; available activities include canoeing, SCUBA diving, kayaking, fishing, camping, hiking, wildlife watching, and swimming.
    Please call Blue Spring State Park at 386-775-3663 before your visit to get the latest manatee count.

    I was swimming there 20 years ago with four girls. A large female manatee swam up to us and rolled over on her back wanting a belly rub. The youngest girl then climbed on top of my head and started screaming. This place is Florida's best kept secret.

      @Jordan Jay I used to live in Melbourne Florida and kept our boat in a marina. We were watching a group of manatees from the shore when one surfaced and blew snot all over my Air Force dress uniform. Fun times.

      I was also there 20 years ago! I just responded to two other similar comments. Imagine the coincidence if we were there together, though I suspect this experience happens often as it's common for them to pass through the swimming area and thousands, hundreds of thousands have visited and swam there. I'll add the comment I wrote below though :)
      I swam with a manatee in Florida once. By that I mean all us kids were swimming in a river, located in a state park with hot springs, when a manatee came down the river to us. None of us knew until the lifeguards started shouting to get out and all of us crowded near the single ladder to climb out onto a deck. I looked back through the clear Florida water and saw it coming towards us. The young boy bebind me was last in line to get out and just before it was my turn to escape on the ladder I looked back and saw the manatee directly under him. He started screaming terrified, "It's touching my foot!!!" I wasn't afraid because that majestic manatee was so magical and friendly looking. I remember as all of us kids and parents stood around watching it pass through the swimming area and being so disappointed and confused why we weren't allowed to swim with it.

    Why aren’t boat propeller guards mandatory by law? Seems like an easy fix to stop the destruction of these beautiful creatures

      Good question

    • @anstjsdlr
      @anstjsdlr 3 года назад +13

      As a wise question as yours may be, the answer is relatively simple and dumb; it is because they do not want to pay extra money for manatee.

    • @stevelucky7579
      @stevelucky7579 3 года назад +2

      Probably because it’s not convenient enough. People want (I assume) good propellers to enjoy speed in large bodies of water. And (I assume again) propeller guards disrupt/throw off that speed maneuverability etc. or is too expensive otherwise.

    • @snoopdogg8737
      @snoopdogg8737 2 года назад

      That is a good question however the prop scars are actually not as serious as the manatee striking the actual boat. the manatees are able to recover from the cuts relatively well however when the hull of the boat hits the manatee the real damage is done. Boat strikes break bones and cause internal damage much more serious than what is evident on the outside.

    Well done Florida. These things are slow and could have been wiped out years ago like Stellar's Sea Cow. Protecting them and their environment will guarantee spending tourists (including Aussies where The Dugong lives). A win/ win situation.
