DUGOUT CANOE BUILD - Full Version - Surviving the Great Barrier Reef Expedition Ep1
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 май 2021
- This is the full narrated version of my one year full-time dugout canoe build. I built the canoe for a 1500km solo expedition up Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, surviving completely off the land and sea.
Aside from describing the challenges of the build I also explain how I build it with the tools available 1846 shipwreck survivor, James Morrill. I'm placing myself in his historic predicament to see if I can sail up the reef to an old rescue haven set up on the remote northern tip of Australia.
I'll be releasing an entire RUclips series about the upcoming expedition plus a feature film and roadshow tour of Australia with the film and canoe.

Hi Mike, when you visited the Cooktown Museum with interest in our old canoes on display I thought you were pulling my leg when you told me you were gonna build and paddle a canoe up the coast to the Tip of Cape York... bloody well done mate!!
Thanks Harold. It was a pleasure to meet you up there! I’ll look you up next time I get up there.
In an age where most guys can't even change the air filter on their rig, it's great to see this kind of talent making something from nothing.....I'm guessing that your dad passed down alot of his own practical abilities. Great adventure.
Okay boomer. Maybe not all our dads have been present to pass on these skills for us. They been busy ruining the housing market, destroying the planet and struggling to open pdfs, to actually be a good parent.

Thanks heaps!!!
Love how you made the canoe. Im hooked
Hey Mike...!!!
Just found your video tonight while reviewing questions from students...There are lots of things I would suggest doing differently, but I mean that as a HUGE COMPLEMENT...!!!...since you really went through this process in the true spirit of discovery as found in "experimental archaeology" and traditional craft learning being done today by many...
After 40 plus years of teaching traditional life skills (what many now call "bushcraft") and traditional woodworking, you are to be commended for your wonderful efforts. I really will look forward to reviewing and watching more of your video efforts and the fine job you do as a videographer!...
Thanks Jay!
Hi Mike, this is terrific work - well done! I really enjoyed your presentations since now building some proas and dinghy in Poland. I've been with my family and worked in Newcastle for 2.5 year since 2000 :‐) All the best from Poland, Pawel

Oh my gosh, You have a great personality, you are Incredibly talented & skilled. Extremely handsome... Can you do anything wrong?? lol...

It's 2am and I'm here😢

Not reckoning a chainsaw was used in the 1800’s! Good luck with it though, will enjoy watching the progress.
If you ever dig out another canoe and cracks develop drill a hole at the end of the crack and it will stop the crack from continuing on. We do this with metal work as well before we repair a weld.
greetings.... I commented that without the ''line in line out'' look I couldn't pay attention to these types of build & I am a regular for the #treeBarkBoat build it's a 9-year build but I mean the line in line out is like a calculator THANKS.
Damn impressive Bala ! 💯🤙 just an opinion, should defs try another built with bamboos?
how a man with a nice property, money and cool project and great taste can drink instant coffee??
amazing, I can only transform the big tree into firewood or toothpicks
😂
❤❤❤
hey, I saw your interview with Rob, nice channel, I subscribed!
Thanks Robb🙂!!!

Hey Mike had to come by and see your video unfortunately I learned of it through a different RUclips site called quantum tech!
That’s ok. I gave them permission.
I'm so impressed! I'm in awe. And all that chopping, and you've still got all your fingers and toes intact. Re the chainsaw, you're more likely to trip the chain brake should the saw kick back if you have the thumb of your left hand WRAPPED around that handle. Might make the difference between a closed head injury and a splitting headache and grey matter to show off to your kids. Sort of like wearing a seatbelt loosely vs snugly. Beautiful dog. Where at PS did you dive for the abs and crays?
Thanks Derek, and thanks for the tip on the chainsaw! I can’t give away my secret cray spots sorry🤣. They’re hard enough to find as is.
Didn't people used to burn out logs to speed up the build process?
Hey Outback Mike
Absolutely cannot wait for more videos
Sounds like the best trip ever
When is expedition launch day?
Good luck
Robert
Thanks heaps Robert! Much appreciated🙂
Launching in June sometime.
Amazing video. We would like to show this video on our channel with your permission. We will add your link and your name will also be mentioned in the video. Let us know what you think
Could you email the request to info@outbackmike.com please.
@@OutbackMike Please check out it
I give you great credit for building this it is I'm sure intense hard labor that requires dedication. Awsome job. Buuuut you continuously reference a ship wreck survivor that you mimic. He built his raft from wreckage not a log, he most definitely did NOT have gloves tools (especially) power tools and I'm almost 100% sure nothing you did here even resembles his journey.
Question Mike how did you fix the cracks on the wood?
Wetting the wood allows it to swell and close the cracks. I used salt water too to stop mould growth. There were cracks in the stern which still leaked though so I plugged them with native bees wax (also borer holes and wood knots)
@@OutbackMike I saw you doing in the video, but was not sure if you did anything else to fix the stern, I am watching the series and loving it.
Многие мечтают о подобной дороге, но не все по ней пройдут.
A talented hunk...what can you ask more? ^_^
It was a dugout.
What kind of tree was this?
Norfolk pine.
I need nex vdeo
I think if. you would have cut out planks from the trunk and then made the canoe it would have been faster, the dug out method definitely wastes a lot of wood.
Possibly. I only cut planks out so as not to waste wood.
Kk
On TV/movies yes, in real life, nope. Trying to set fire to the interior of the canoe would just ruin it, be impossible to judge how much was burnt and take forever too, an adze is hundreds of times faster than burning a controlled fire inside a canoe.
Great work. Sorry, but the background music overwhelms your voice and distracts from the video.
Pine? That wouldn’t be my choice, but I’m not building it…
j'aime sans travail
I hate when people scam on other people's hard work!!
Not sure what you mean by that.
@@OutbackMike I guess I did not understand that they were promoting your video and either way good or bad intentions it worked cuz I didn't watch theirs I came to your channel 👍🤠
Very inspiring mate. Half way through your audiobook and happy to come across your channel. Great to get eyes on the build after reading about it.
