Love your videos and all the information you provide...plus, love all your choices of species you choose to keep and spotlight! Thanks for the videos!
Absolutely beautiful, I read about these fish from several books and snatched up a school when they appeared at my LFS one day. Turns out I got two males to four females. They were full of personality, I basically centered my aquarium around them at that point. They have all kinds of cool behaviors. Give them hairgrass, seriously!
My big male, Presley, blossomed. Full of greens and blues, with a muscley bull-like appearance, bold streaks of black, dazzling blue eyes, and those glorious fins. The females had green eyes. The second male was smaller and more subdued in color and finnage.
One day Presley suffered a wound from one of his tankmates which sadly he did not recover from. I decided to add more emperors, and was even able to obtain black ones. One of them, even as a youngster, had a very long center ray on his tail. He grew fast and got mean. He became a bully of the other emperors especially. The original second male finally came into his own, and so both of these dominant males caused constant chaos. Adding plants and hides helped with the other fish, but the emperors ended up crammed up behind the heater and filter intake, and always had injuries on their fins. I frequently had to confine and quarantine. One of the males eventually died. One day the remaining male (the black one)had every other fish in one half of the tank, guarding the other half alone. This persisted for several days, and he got moved permanently to another tank where he is the smallest fish and can cause no trouble. Turns out he had guarded a few eggs long enough to hatch, and three of these survived, all of which turned out male. No aggression so far, though they've reached full size. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but if they get mean, I'm thinking of trying an emperor tetra bachelor aquarium. The four that I have, plus a few more, all males, so no one can really establish a territory and there are no females to harass or fight over. It could be a success or a disaster. One male may still become a tyrant. I wonder if anyone's tried it.
Closing thoughts are that I still adore these fish, but sometimes there's a psycho in the bunch! (Actually, big size, fast growth, early and overly exaggerated finnage, high dominance and aggression, impressive "protective daddy" mode, this guy has a lot of testosterone; arguably good genes, just bad for a community tank.)
Thanks for sharing your experience. I just ordered 12 N. palmeri: 6 black and 6 albino. Hopefully they will play nice because I want to put the in an office aquarium. I'll be sure to hold them at home in quarantine for a couple months just to get to know them better.
Thank you. I just got 3 of these guys yesterday- had never seen them before. They only had 3 but I'll be adding more as soon as I can.
Your videos are so helpful. I got my son his first tank with a red wag platy, wide fin zebra Danio and 2 ghost shrimp. He's been a great at taking care of them and now wants to upgrade to have his room look like yours... Lol
Most beautiful tetra for me. Truly regal
Thanks for your videos, Rachel! I learned from them a lot! I'm falling in love with each specie you present to us, but I don't have anymore space at home! Greetings from Puerto Rico! ❤️
I've been hoping for a spotlight on this species, thanks again for the advice on my octo this morning
The mix of different silver and black fish looks much better than I would have thought. Several large groups would look great in a large planted tank.
never saw/knew these ones existed. Great educational video, as always.
Another amazing vid!
Awesome video and information!
I love the 150 hillstream tank by the way!.... awesome display
Ms. Rachel, after watching this video about the purple emperor tetras and KGTropicals getting some from you, I ordered 20 of those cuties and got them yesterday!! ❤️
Cute little fish!
beautiful fish!
tks u so much rachel
I think I may have to try some of these! I would love to see them outside- I love your outside fish :)
The pencil fsh look awesome. ..will def try some emperors. Inspiring .
Those pencilfish and tetras go perfect together
It says a lot about you even though that happened with the distributor she still didn’t put them on blast that’s pretty professional and just a good insight into your personality
Have you ever kept Inpaichthys kerri , the royal tetra? Very similar but has an adipose fin and when settled is a deep violet, very beautiful. Bought some from a pretty awful fish shop, they were labelled wrong and I got 8 for $25. Best bargain ever!
I gotta get these they are so cool, i love the fins
Also can you do a video about threadfin rainbows? They are amazing!
Had 3 of these. 1 was female. She disappeared/died. Then one male kept bullying the other, and almost killed him. So I moved the bullied one to another tank I have. 9.6 gallon with no other fish in it. He's doing good.
But, yeah, they are so intelligent. They sometimes even remind me of a dog. lol If you never had any, they will come up to the glass and just look at you and all. Pretty awesome fish!
Very beautiful fish....I used to have some years ago. It would be super interesting if you bred them outside. Would love to follow that project, and learn more about them..
First off LOVE your channel! Your fun, informative, inspiring and heart felt! My question though, and you may mention it later in the video (still watching) but I had to ask before I forgot who is the Adorable spotted little one to the left center at 1:04? Thank you so much for sharing your love of fish keeping! It's always exciting to see what you've got going on next!
scissor tail tetras are my top 5 fav
What is YOUR favorite tetra? I am stuck between a few different ones!

Rachel O'leary my favorites are the green neon and the Emperor tetras. cheap, beauties and easy to keep .
Love you're videos, very educational.
What species would be the best schoolig; I. kerri or N. palmeri? And/or would they do well together as a group?
I would definitely love to see you breed them outside. I'm always super impressed by tetra breeding as I don't think I'd have the skill or patience for it.
the beauty of breeding outside is that it rarely involves any skill
Favorite fish!!!
Yes breed them outside that would be cool to see!!
Ms. Rachel, you are doing a great job! Thank you for all of your insight... My question to you is, If i house the Blue eye, Red eye, the Purple and the Black tetras will they cross breed in a community tank?
I think I see a few female Nematobrycon laccorti. The females of this species also have bluish green eyes and the the lateral black stripe is thinner slightly redder in colour. and yes I also see some Nematobrycon Palmeri. Thank you sharing these cool tetras with us.
Hey Rachel , informative as usual thnx . But which fish is that with the red spot below its eyes in the second tank ?????????????
nice
Would love to see how they work out in the bins outside. Yes please. Fave Tetra is Blood fin Tetra, very fun to watch and they really don't get bigger than 2 inches. Working on changing out all the plants now so it's just Crypts... and Bloods.
ha, oh my!
Their mating is superfun to watch, ive had em before, the male waits next to a patch of moss or fine leaves, then lures a female into the dense bush and they start wiggling around like mad hahaha.
Would to see them outside pond breed. I would to setup some ponds here but the 100 degree summers in Texas make it difficult if you don't go deep.
What are the little guys in the second tank with black center line and red gills??? Stunning!
Tucanoichthys tucano
emperors for the win!
I was looking at your playlist and I haven't seen any spotlights in lampeye killis. I'm planning to stock them in my 5gallon planted. Are they suited form my setup?
At about 2:58 what are the tiny fish with the black stripe and the orange-red face called? They're so cool!!!
Hey Rachel, what's the recommended tank size for a group of 10 or so of the N. Palmeri?
Hi Rachel, I was thinking about keeping these with german blue rams. Would the higher temperature be ok? I currently keep my rams at 28 though I've been told I can drop it down to 27 without compromising them.
Do you have any info on Native fish? Due to unfortunate circumstances, I've been forced to either not keep fish, or set up a couple of 40 breeders in my garage. The garage is very well insulated, and would be ideal for natives, but not tropical. I think I've figured out I will keep some smaller sunfish in planted tanks. But was wondering if you had any info/ideas on any or all natives?
1 correct fish xD Good job, distributor.
Emperor tetra is Very lovely fish. what kind of fish has five dots on the body?
I miss these type of species spotlight on your channel 😔
So if you just left some adults in a tank, and didn’t do anything but the usual routine, would they still breed?
Are you back? We miss your newer vids. Get well soon.
Any updates on the Mystery Snail eggs?
Can I keep 6 of the black emperor tetras with 6 panda corydoras in a 20 gallon high aquarium?
very nice fish, I actually want a group of these in my 55 when I get it running, can I ask u a ? please.... what substrate do u have in your 150 hillstream tank?....I'm looking for the best substrate I can get for my 55... thanks!...God bless
How many fish per gallon do you have in those tanks? Also what’s that thing on the glass?
For my 55g community tank I currently just have serbai and longfin albino corys, platys and praecox rainbows. I have 12 praecox rainbows and 8 platys. I want more fish. Should I get more rainbows or get a 3rd schooling species? Keeping in mind I'm going to add 1 blue zebra angelfish
hey you. where can I get that food you stick to the glass? that's a great way to view for health and so cool for filming. thank you for the vid
+Shannon Lee I sell it :)
Do you have blue emperor tetras?
Are they aggressive like serpae tetra?
2:08 Food? POOP! Food? Nope, still poop. Food? 🤮 poooop! Food? Food? Uhg! POOP! 🤣
Poop jokes never get old.
Do they go well with angels?
Great video. Do u sell red and black pencil fish? If yes how much?
I want to get a school of like 20 purple emperors in my 40 breeder...that would be amazing.
I love these but I have had horrible luck with them. I lose one each day until only a couple are left.
definitely would like to see them bred outside.
How would these do in a blackwater setup? Not super dark tannins, but still tannin-laden water.
most likely awesome
I have 2 male black emperor tetra I've been trying to find females, but can't find them anywhere! I have them in my community tank but I'd love to start breeding them. Any suggestions on where to find them? Yes, please breed them!
Hi Rachel! I think it would be interesting in making a video about how often you syphon the bottom of your tanks to remove the waste (how often is optional, if you syphon more some tanks than others depending of the fish and their waste, etc). I always watch you doing water changes, but hardly syphoning. That's also a question I would like to know :-) have a great day!!
i can do that! i siphon the bottom every time, the nice thing with mostly bare bottom tank is it is SO easy to maintain.
Rachel O'leary That is so true about bare bottom tanks :) how about your 150g for example? With it being more like a set up tank if you know what I mean. I know you cleaned the filter not too long ago after a year, but how about the food waste and fish waste that stays on the bottom and in between that heavy vegetation? And like your shell dweller's tank with the shells and rocks? It should be quite a work trying to get into the nukes and crannies, or, you just mostly leave it alone and do more frequent wcs? I think people would like to know that, I know I do ;-) Oh, and thanks for responding :D have a great day and thanks again! :)
I have a mixed school of 6 leopard and zebra danios that I purchased yesterday. 2 of the leopard danios immediately swim to to the bottom of the aquarium every time I put my hands in to trim a plant or do whatever.Within about 5 minutes the danios will rejoin the school and seem perfectly fine. Is this ok or normal? Please help!!
Sounds pretty normal to me
They are peaceful to other species of fish but aggressive to their own actually. They will dib off their species' fins and slowly kill them over time. I'm not sure if it's reflected whether they felt the space they are isn't enough for all to stay. ( had 6/7 of them in a 10 gallon tank , only left 3-4 over time )
You need to upgrade to at least a 20 gallon long tank , for 6 plus . The bigger the tank the easier to maintain. Tiny bit of water gets dirty quicker. I have a small home so I have a 36 gallon Bow Front. Your 6 were probably too crowded in a 10 gallon.
Can they be with a betta
Rachel, please let me know what specie are these pencilfishes in the second part of this video?
Nannostomus espei- the barred pencil
Emperors are very lovely fish 🐟 I hope I can upgrade from my 10 gal real soon. Also Rachel do you ever get Chocolate Gouramis? I can hope u can do a spotlight on the chocolates 🍫. I love your channel Rachel 😉
I do occasionally!
Rachel O'leary can chocolate gouramis get along with honey gouramis?
Anyone have any experience with a single Emperor getting super territorial? Bought the only one they had at the store and he's been a pest to everyone so we put him in the quarantine tank.
tetras in general need to be in decent groups or they don 't exhibit the best behavior- some hide, some get nippy, some get territorial.
What fish species are the ones with the black stripe and red chin in the mixed tank?
Also are Apistos smaller than Kribensis or like the same size as a female Krib?
depends on species, but generally pretty comparable
I see some in local fish store yesterday I was told males have blue eyes female s have green . have you heard this
yes please breed them I wood like more info on that please
Hi, what's the food you're feeding them stuck to the glass? Looks like they love it. I'd like to get for my tank too plz.
Sera onip
@@RachelOLeary Thanks Rachel! :)
I've found that lacortei females have yellow-green-blue eye color. only the males tend to have red.
I want some how do I buy
That Nannostomus Espei is a beautiful fish. But, at $15 a pop, it's hard for me to justify buying a group. Still, they'd be a good choice for a Species Spotlight IMHO. What are you feeding the Emperors? Thanks, Rachel.
Pretty sure I did one on the espei. They are WELL worth their price tag, and are one of my top 10 fish for sure. The emperors are eating onip, gvg mix, and frozen cyclopeez
How is the food staying to the tank wall? Is there a link to what you're feeding them?
Celcius represent!
I willt ry and remember to do that for each species video- I am listening to you guys!
It is very much appreciated.
Did you breed them outside and what was the outcome?
hi,pls can you tell me the name of yellow and black fish? tks.
+Ken Chan Nannostomus espei, the barred pencil
Hello Rachel how are you, will the Emperor and black Emperor Tetra school together?
We keep a school of these in our 300 gallon South American community tank. The females indeed have green eyes, while the males have blue.
Emperor Tetras, go for breeding!
OK I'm noticing an Umbrella Dwarf Ciclid ( A. Borrelii) that actually eats non-live food. How does that work?
+TaUnc Fester I have never had a hard time feedi g them
OMG How? I've kept them since '94 and they've always were pretty demanding, wouldn't touch anything except LBB and cultured Ostracods. I've sworn them off because they turn their community tanks into little Games of Thrones mini-fiefdoms with young females spawning after a couple months of hatching, gets too crazy for the dither fish. P.S. come to think of it, we didn't have Sera foods back then either, so the quality and taste of the dry foods today are probably five times better than what was available then. I'm buying some Sera.
interesting! I do feed a lot of frozen, live, and the sera foods in rotation to them as well as freeze dried krill (which i pulverize)
i wanna see your turtles plz!!
Your shirt is similar to Joey's merch. Im guessing you're a fan of him or I'm just mistaken?
Joey is oneo f my best friends, in real life. He is the one who convinced me to share on RUclips and has remained a good friend and supporter.
would emperor tetras be ok in a 47 gallon column aquarium?
depends on the dimensions, but most likely as long as it has adequate filtration and surface disruption
@@RachelOLeary 20x18x30
haha looks like your distributor slipped you a feeder guppy
+JediSuPhu yep
What is a good Tetra that can take 84-86 degrees?
+Zacks Tanks Crazy Aquarium Guy rummynose or cardinals
More fish Zac? You're crazy:)
hey Rachel,
Thanks for getting around to my most successful breeding venture. ;)
Around
99'/2000, I was successfully breeding this fish, and I had red eyes
instead of blue and green, after a lengthy hiatus from the hobby I've
now found Black, Blue, and Purple Emporer Tetras.
I am currently
breeding my blacks, as the blues' haven't been as healthy from my first
source. Now the issues I'm having with Blues are; 1.Finding males with
lyre tails, 2.There are males which look like females, only having a
more blue sheen to them and a longer anal fin, also between Dorsal and
tail fin is blue in these males and yellow to red in the females.
Long story short how many sub-species are we as fish pimps working with out here?
And
lastly!!!! I'm dying to get a tiny portion of your Bukaphelandra ;) ,
from the 150. The yellowish oval leaves! I wanted to say something
before you packed and headed west for your Seattle GSAS appearance.
Please let me know if you're able to sell any, and we can make it happen
Captain!!! My best to Chris as well, weldaholics' Hooooooooooo!!!!! :D
Cheers,
Michael
michael alexis do you have any black females for sale?
Pete B sorry I don't, been trying to breed a small school, and it's coming together very slowly!
AFAIK, there are only two recognized species of Nematobrycon, but with how easy they are to captive breed, folks have been doing some neat work with line breeding color forms.
I like these fish. Not as common around here.
how do I get it if I don't have a PayPal account?
+Shannon Lee anyone can pay as a guest if they have a debit or credit card or you can message me via email for alternatives
Can any one help with this fish on my channel
love the shirt!
I've done loads of research into these before getting them, and what's constantly left out is aggression. As it's not something you expect with a tetra until you've experienced it, the males are territorial and aggressive, not a good community fish in a smaller tank. Mine's 30 ish gallons 80cm long, I have 5 males and 3 females, and 1 male in has claimed half the tank and is fighting with the other males, with visible damage caused! If you do some research on aggressive emporer tetra you will find that there are a good number of cases of aggression problems with these guys!
Looks like they haven't colored up yet
Hello, my Emperor Tetra males are killing each other, they are not too peaceful, I’m trying to catch them to get them outta there. They are beautiful but Not happy with how mean they are They are terrorizing all my neon tetras and rummy noses who now can’t eat because of them.
Not sure if you notice there a endler species inside. XD
+Melvin Wong it's a wild guppy
