  • Herniated discs are frequently a source of back pain for people in their 40s and up. Sometimes they happen in people as young as 20 years old!
Surgeries like a discectomy and a spinal fusion, where they drill metal rods and screws into the spine, are often done as a surgical treatment for herniated discs.
There are so many things to do that will help improve a herniated disc naturally without surgery. But there are also soooo many wrong things to do that usually make back pain worse.
In this video, Dr. David tells you the top 13 things that absolutely make back pain from a herniated disc worse.

Hi Dr. David Middaugh, thank you for your video. Do you think it is also needed to spend more time lying down in a T4 Syndrom? I have suffered debilitating pain in my thorassic back, like a stuck knife in there, for the last 13 years, but it has never been as bad as in 2023. I have started your shrugging exercise to lift the vertebrae and no other exercise has brought me so much relief. Now im thinking what else can i do to heal as fast as possible, to end this living hell. Thank you very much for your information and help 👍😘

i had bad posture from gaming and sitting at the computer for years. it resulted in alot of herniated discs in my thoracic and cervical spine. i herniated my cervical bad 2 years ago and took 1 month of rest went to a chiro and a physical therapist and learned some exercises to do on my own.. i then proceeded to build muscle. and it really helped. it wasn't until i started using ice and heat pads on my back and upper arms that i really found a miraculous recovery. it really healed the inflammation i didnt realize i had for years and i could move sooooooooo much easier. you gota keep up with the exercise though or the body regressses!

This is so good. You are so right- there is so so much confusion about what to do and what not to do with a herniated disc. I have had a c5c6 herniation for 15 months and I'm a very very active person, who exercises daily and it's really messed up my life. I had surgery 6 mo ago but it didn't work, so I'm doing an ACDF in about a month.

I had a spinal fusion back in 2008 on L3-L4 and L5-S1. I was 23 and had tried everything. It gave me my life back! The last year or so the intense pain has creeped back to that same area. I should probably get an updated MRI, but I'm not sure i want to know.

Do you have any exercises that strenthen the core but don't make a herniated disc in the lower neck/upper thorax area worse? I have found out planks make it worse and also that exercise where you are on your heels and elbow and lift up your lower back and rump. Both these exercises have been strengthening my core and improving my lower back muscle strength, but I recently (4 weeks ago) aggravated a long term injury at C6-C7 and also at T1? between my shoulder blades. I cut back on those exercises, and the injury was improving after four weeks, but going back to my normal core exercises are re-aggravating it. What can I do?

The physical therapist i went to was having me "warm up" on an exercise bike and I couldn't stand up straight after a few minutes on it. And then after therapy I could barely walk for two days. After i had surgery I saw a different physical therapist and he said that the type of disc herniation I had was the less common type so everything the previous place was doing made it worse.
I know surgery is not recommended but I did physical therapy, injections, chiropractic, decompression therapy, and acupuncture with no relief and finally had surgery. I live alone and I couldn't continue to be in so much pain that I wasn't able to do normal things around the house and months of pain was just too much.

I have seen many physical therapist, had injection, acupuncture, inversion table.....amd so on but nothing helps. The MRI shows DDD on L4L5 but no pain on legs at all. I have pain on my right side of my lower back and it travels to my right hip. Do you think it's my SI joint problem. I feel better when I use a belt on my SI joint. So frustrating I have seen almost 10 specialist but noone helped.

I do agree with you, as a physio I stop my patients doing these in the first place and see ifnlain is improving or not.
By the way do you get a lot criticism for using the muscle imbalance hypothesis this often? I like it too, but the sceltics are oretty much against it.
The only thing I diaagree with is #8 the ball squeezing exercise. I don't think it's good one for LBP but for a different reason. Easing off the glutes with reciprocal innervation is fine, however the psoas can get overworked with hip adduction.

First I'd like to say that I've watched your entire series in sciatic and herniated disc pain. I've learned enough I think to keep the Drs and PTs here in Mississippi from hurting me, and that's no joke. EVERYTHING they've done and suggested has been plain wrong or questionable. The care from the Ortho clinic has been awful. They simply don't care is the issue. I have a few questions I keep coming back to. I'm 52, have 2 herniated discs with severe sciatic pain, severe pinpoint pain at the disc area as you've talked about. The bed is hell itself. I also have a torn off rotator cuff in my dominant arm which is REQUIRED to function with the disc problems. I don't want them to cut on anything. I can't get to you guys. I've done yoga and stayed out of pain for ten years. Is my yoga gone forever? What kind of foods provide the best antiinflammatory and pain relief? I'm.a housekeeper. Will I have to get on disability and never mop again? I'm a mom. I have to do laundry. I can't have surgery or I can't pay my bills including the insurance to pay for the surgery. The situation SEEMS quite impossible. I'm doubtful that there are ANY alternative therapy choices within an hour from here. Ortho's next step will be injections. I'm at a loss what to do.

I can tell you from recent experience, I think I am going to have to give up my planks I've been doing for two years that the doctor prescribed to strengthen my core to aleviate my lower back pain (not herneated) which had really worked, because doing it yesterday reaggravated the disc in my upper back (T1?) between my shoulder blades that I originally hurt doing pushups years ago. It has set me back four weeks to Thanksgiving when I aggravated it and am in severe pain again. Also have to give up the back crunches. It's just a vicous circle. I can't even do my exercises any more and I am losing my muscle tone again. Life sucks.
