This is a method that is literally over 100 years old. My grandparents grew up during prohibition in the 1920s. The grape juice at the grocery store had a label on it that said "Warning: Do not add yeast and leave in a dark place, or it will ferment". Of course, the yeast and the sugar would always be strategically placed on the shelf right next to the grape juice.

I'm trying this recipe for a friend! I don't drink anymore, but I enjoy brewing. This is the simplest recipe I've used. Usually, I use cans of fruit or something, but it never turns out right. We got a bottle of grape juice for free, so I threw in all the ingredients, topped it with a coffee filter, rubber band, and the lid. I had to skim the top a few times, but now it's been over a week, and it smells incredibly good. I did have to add a sprinkle more yeast after a few days as it wasn't activating right, now its perfect. I'm going to give it a few more weeks, then I'm going to ask what they think of it! I will say this used to be a cheap way to make alcohol, but now the ingredients have gotten expensive. Get you some $0.99 yeast and get your juice from a foodbank or dollar store.
Bro i have never watched a single one of your videos before, but i can tell you care about your supporters/fans because theres pretty much a response back from you on every single comment in this section.
Nice video, demonstrating how simple the fermentation process is, at the basic level. The first time I saw this particular method, was on an episode of Banged Up Abroad. A British expat in Saudi Arabia, ended up doing this on a large scale and was eventually betrayed by a customer. The consequences were barbaric, but he returned home with life and limbs intact.
@@PlattR I'm sure we think it strange since the process seems so simple to us, but to many, this basic biological/chemical process can seem like wizardry to the uninitiated. Anyone who does an internet search in a country where that activity is prohibited is taking a huge risk. However, alcohol is a drug and people with a predisposition to that drug will take unimaginable risks to procure that drug. Sad but true.
@@michaellavery4899 Yes, back in the early eighties the nearby Safeway market in Saudi had large stacks of Rauch (Germany) grape juice prominently displayed at the front of the store with yeast nearby. We always had a couple of 5 gallon jugs going. Nice that the Rauch juice was in pop-top bottles so we could decant into those and reseal. Never a problem with authorities. They more or less knew what was up. Drunk in public or transporting alcohol was another matter however.
Back in the 80's I worked on many exploration oil rigs in the Bering Sea of Alaska. It was a very restricted environment and of course alcohol free for many reasons. Working in the "hospitality" arm of the business (feeding and housing the workers), we became absolute Masters of Pruno and ad to get very creative in explaining the odd over-consumption of natural fruit juices. One thing for sure, the fermenting of this elixir created a very distinct odor and was very hard to disguise in a closed environment... but we managed. We did, however, experience a couple of "accidents" from insufficient venting that resulted in explosions that left evidence all over the walls and ceilings of the brewmaster closet. Good thing this all occured prior to "CSI-Miami" and the prolific use of luminol :-)
I've been brewing like this for 3 years and have won two 1st prizes at my local field day shows lol. 3x3ltr green apple juice 4x3ltr red apple juice, 1kg sugar, and 1 sachet of Mangrove Jacks SN9 wine yeast. Too easy 😊
I made some like this several years ago. It didn't taste very good so I put it away in a cupboard and forgot about it. I found it again about two years later and it tasted just like sherry wine! Well, I don't drink anymore so now I use it for cooking. Does a great job, especially with seafood.
So I decided to give this a try. I bought the juice and added the sugar and the yeast (added wine yeast). After 5 days it was done fermenting. (I let it rest for 2 days)now it's onto the second stage. And let me tell you, it tasted amazing, like really amazing. I'm gonna leave it until easter and then im going to bottle it.
Hi there Platt, thanks for this video, good thing I didn’t know about this as a teenager, tee hee, I would have been very popular. But now I am a mom and all my kids are grown and I have time to make wine. Old fashioned table wine by my standards. Mommy got a little blasted from that first batch. 😂 I have 4batches fermenting under my cupboard right now, 5 more days. 🎉🎉 It even clears up nice when I decant it and leave in the fridge for 3 days or so. Can't stress enough the massive respect I have for you for not dragging this out and making it into some 15 minute video where you just bullshit around 90% of it, with only 10% of the content being how to actually do it, spread out throughout the entire video, so we're forced to watch the whole thing.
I've been making mead for around 8-9 years. I've gotten pretty good at it. One of the biggest things I learned was it can make the place you are fermenting it at to really smell like alcohol. Especially if a gallon blows up. Also the bread yeast used in this video can make some pretty strong smelling wine with a good to a bit strong alcohol taste. It's also given me some of the highest proof out of the different types of yeast. However you are pretty much trading taste for abv in my opinion compared to other yeast.
I’ve seen many videos on this but this was by far the most simple way.. no balloon top no valve no having to burp it.. the loose cap is genius.. I know prison folks use bread for the yeast but this is straight drink. Kudos my man and cheers 🍻
I am a recovered alcohol addicted person. But I am still fascinated with the alchemy of it all. I always wondered what the base for pruno was. I know they add all kinds of stuff to make it more appealing.but I figure if it tastes good it probably doesn’t work .
I’m coming back to this video to subscribe and thank you for many many many fun nights you helped me and my friends have. I watched this when I was 15 and sadly my days of making prison wine for the boys are over. I’m 19 now but my boy just turned 21.

@@Andrushka12345 Nah just a rural town high school, most the kids there came from neighbouring towns. A lot of dickheads and a bullying culture that the teachers were complicent in. Average rural school really
I tried a recipe similar a few years back. I messed up and added three cups of sugar instead of one. When it finally was through fermenting, it was so strong that I was three sheets to the wind before I knew what happened. A word from the wise, follow the directions as stated.
I'm sorry but. Yes alcohol can be good in moderation. But to me an "alcoholic" alcohol has taken me on a horrid nightmarish journey of addiction and depression and domestic instability unlike I have ever experienced. And yes. I know how to make homemade wine.
If you sweeten it afterwards, it actually tastes really good. Using an airlock can also help keep contaminants out. All you really have to do is poke a hole in the cap, stick a tube in it, and hang the end of the tube in a cup of water.
I make 5 gallon batches of this in my shed about twice every summer. I tweak it a bit but I love the taste and I consistently get 6.5 ABV. I share it with my friends and they love it!!
My preferred juice is the gallon jug of apple juice from Kroger, I also used a mixture of bread yeast and champagne yeast, and I've just been using the barm at the bottom of each jug to start the next jug. It takes about 2 weeks to fully ferment, but I also don't add any extra sugar to it. I close the lid all the way and just vent it once a day after the first 3 days, and I've only ever had 1 jug explode out of the dozens I've made, because the way those gallon jugs are made, they're able to expand and handle a lot of pressure. It comes out slightly sweet, quite tart, and very effervescent, which I really like.
@Angel Valdez After looking it up, I suppose barm isn't exactly the right term for it. I use what he calls the "yeast sludge" at the bottom of the bottle, after I decant the cider. If you do plan on replicating what I do, do not skimp on the yeast. The one time I had the jug blow up was when I tried putting a smaller amount of yeast in it at the start. Looked it up, apparently it causes the yeast to produce a lot of gasses quickly, rather than gradually. The upside of doing this is that yeast is free, so there's no reason to be stingy with it.
Thanks Platt, you are a lifesaver! I've been making my own booze for several months now. I even showed my brother your videos and he makes it as well. Thanks again Platt, have a good one sir

Best of luck. I hope it turns out great.

I get a lot of feedback and questions from that part of the world.
@@PlattR I'm sure we think it strange since the process seems so simple to us, but to many, this basic biological/chemical process can seem like wizardry to the uninitiated.

@@michaellavery4899 Yes, back in the early eighties the nearby Safeway market in Saudi had large stacks of Rauch (Germany) grape juice prominently displayed at the front of the store with yeast nearby.

Great job!
Tough to beat a goo hard cider.
@Angel Valdez This video might help: ruclips.net/video/Cd5Bbkd933A/видео.html
@Angel Valdez After looking it up, I suppose barm isn't exactly the right term for it. I use what he calls the "yeast sludge" at the bottom of the bottle, after I decant the cider.
If you do plan on replicating what I do, do not skimp on the yeast. The one time I had the jug blow up was when I tried putting a smaller amount of yeast in it at the start. Looked it up, apparently it causes the yeast to produce a lot of gasses quickly, rather than gradually. The upside of doing this is that yeast is free, so there's no reason to be stingy with it.
@@markuskaranthus7182The proper term is “lees”.
