Russian mkts are rather small, based on revenue. Most Western brands would pay for letting their shops in Russia go and leave the country forever, as keeping (low income) business hurts revenues in Western countries. Problem is that this is not so easy. Not only because the corrupt regime tries everything to make this impossible, but also because production chain is already there. And as Russia doesn’t abide by any international law, they cannot easily close it. The only way is to bomb it or to somehow deliver poisened food or whatever, but this task is up to the Ukraine
A lot of Swedish brands come from eastern Europe. I had a White-Westinghouse (an Electrolux brand) refrigerator that was made by the state refrigeration plant in Wroclaw, Poland. When the Iron Curtain fell, Electrolux bought the plant.
We do not have to speculate. Ikea quit retail last summer and her factories were sold to a Russian company early this year. The sale had to be approved by the Russian government therefore it took a while to finalize the contract. It is very likely that the products are sold in different stores. Some people mentioned that they bought similar stuff but much cheaper than in the video. Maybe it was made in those factories?
That was fun. I like IKEA but I have only been there once I think. Possibly twice. And that other furniture store, stuff that people leave on the curb so the trash will come pick it up. We all like to get our stuff there. Some people like to go to the rich neighborhoods because they throw away more expensive trash :-)
Perhaps it's not as large as the original Ikea but it seems to have enough of the similar items that those who Miss Ikea might be satisfied with the replacement. It's an interesting video.
Having the Ikea label, (called a label not tag in uk 🇬🇧) I think it might be Ikea old stock which your Russian shop has bought ... 🤔🤔 The shop was very small, and the prices very high. And we call them Tea Lights not tea candles (although they ARE candles 🙂)
$50 for that lamp! I don't have an Ikea nearby but the hardware chain which _is_ in my 'city' is working hard to make the lightbulbs/globes that would go in it cost $50! 😤
Ironically, the Swedish, "Ikean" and Ukrainian colors are the same. It does not look like my local IKEA at all. A cheap copy, I would say, to be honest. More like "Jysk", maybe, they are less stylish than IKEA, so to speak. In Denmark, IKEA's have theme departments, that look like actual flats/rooms, this is more like a room full of different items. Copying a concept like this will not be taken lightly by IKEA - probably they'll never reconsider returning to Russia. "Potatis" is "potatoes" in Swedish, so a press for mashed potatoes. I think, Swedes like "Korv och potatis", "Sausage with mashed potatoes". In Denmark, potatoes are "kartofler". And sausage is "pølse", by the way.
Try the potato press someday. My children would call the potatos worms after going through the press. They were great to serve with a stew or similar dish where there is juice tomash them if you desire.
@@StPetersburgmeI think you could also fry them. It just breaks the potatoes down for smoother faster cooking. Maybe for the onions also but i like to taste larger chunkier potatoes and onions.
Buying and testing product quality and durability are “the acid test” of the substitute products and company brand. In the meantime, thanks for sharing the video tour. With IKEA, buyers had some certainty when buying from the company. An unknown substitute with “maybe” what we call “a knock-off” copy of merchandise? There will be some uncertainty. You as Russian consumers might not know the answer for maybe two to five years as you test and evaluate the new brand substitute. Good luck. Jim. an Economist.
In modern business, not all products are made downstream by one brand. They only facilitate products from other brands, and this is profitable for well-known brands like IKEA. IKEA only produces furniture and that is its core, while the others are products outside of IKEA that use IKEA as a facility to sell them. In business it's called collaboration, to increase profits you have to collaborate, that's the advantage of globally famous brands.
Hope you were not too tiered by the time you go to the place you were staying at. I have never been to Ikea, but it is a very big store and that one has very few of the Ikea items that I have seen in houses I visited. For me this is a small shop even for the other chains that would normally be much smaller. Still as you say there are some things there that people might like. It is possible though that the stocks they are getting will run out and then I dunno the furniture is what Ikea is really about, already they do not have much.
@@Lassemalten well there is one in Dublin but when I was building my house it wasn't there. I live 1 hr 20 mins from it now but I've only gone into the store beside it decatlon. For furniture my local town has lots of shops but I already have what I need. I bought a small console table two years ago and for garden furniture I just got stuff locally.
@@Lassemalten I am not sure if they plan or if there is a second one now. Iive in a town with 30,000 people and Dublin or just a bit closer Galway are the two near cities. It is a small market but a very profitable one for business so that's why they are here.
Some of my furniture comes from my local Ikea store (in the UK), including the desk for my gaming PC and all my bookcases. Generally quite pleased with the products and the general quality. Russia really needs to work on making their own products look like something worth buying though.
Wow so interesting! Some of the stuff with your money translations seems quite expensive. Here in Canada Ikea is fairly inexpensive. I have seen some of those items in ikea. The metal canister for putting you utensils in, I have the very same one from ikea. When the actual Ikea was in Russia was it the huge mega Ikea's that we have in Canada??
5,800 rubles came out to 73.43 usd I don't like Ikea , I found it confusing but to be fair I went during a time when covid was at it's peak and things were not in stock. That table was 489.94 usd. Maybe it comes with chairs.
I suggest a lot of the stuff is made in China - see the Chinese characters on several of the labels. This is no doubt where the RU economy is heading. And, if they had a restaurant, it would probably be serving dim sum.
Anything with the IKEA name on a label probably is equal quality to IKEA standards. I don't believe they would allow their name on an item otherwise. I noticed other items were made in Russia and China. These may or may not be equal to IKEA quality standards. They do certainly have IKEA type prices.
@@StPetersburgme Beautiful, but please show us shops who sold cheaper goods, they are beyond or an average Russian. Thanks for video, was good and interesting. but we have to meet our budget.
Seems to be few business that have stayed.. Are the old companies still operating but hiding behind new names. ie Coke still suppling cola syrup. Why didn't you get the cup and plate?
There are businesses that stayed and some products are gray imports! Many companies are finding it difficult to leave as they need permission to sell, and this has been made into a lengthy complex process on purpose, some companies have been waiting a year! Also when you sell you cannot take the money out of russia anyway! Trapped.
Nice Job ! Higher Prices it seems in smaller store and still selling previous stock with IIKEA tags ! Personally not fan of iIKEA as prefer all Hardwood Furniture! Lean more Traditional New England style as built to last !
As a Swede I had no clue of this. Are the products pirat copies? Or has IKEA sold it's production in Russia? Wow, to know there is a chain called SWED HOUSE in Russia, it blows my mind! Oh, I just saw that the word potatoe press is in Swedish; "Potatispress" and other items too. I'm totally confused now.... I bet much of it is made in China.
Hello Ksenia. I think that in general this Swed House may have some similarities with IKEA, but probably these products are not made in Sweden at all. Anyway prices are more or less the same as in Italy where by the way we have a wide choice.of products with different prices. Thanks a lot for this nice info.
Hi, we also have a wide choice. For example, I bought a lamp 10 times cheaper than that one from the video. Mostly it's expensive because it's "kinda IKEA".
Ikea had several factories in Russia. The company left last summer. I do not know what happened to those plants but it seems that Ikea was not able to find a buyer.

I’m so sorry for your sick Putin government. I hope you will get to a safe place, maybe out of the country before the Russian civil war starts. Be well ❤
not to get me wrong, i am by no way a supporter of the current ukraine-russia situation. but a "russian civil war"? sorry. if you check the stats, russian GDP per capita (in purchasing power parity) is as high as it never was before. significatly higher then several of eastern countries that are part of the EU since more then an decade. even if there are for sure still lots of poor ppl (moneywise), russia still also has a decent amount of higher middle class population. if you check the biggest realestate portals, there are 3 times the amount of houses for sale with 300 sqm and up compared to germany (where i am from) and if you check google maps, in all the outskirts of any huge city, there are almost kilometers of range somewhere with huge houses, probably tenthousends or even hundredthousends of them all over the whole country, houses of dimensions and design you will not find in most western european countrys, at least not in such an quantity. also the home owner rate in russia is like 92 percent, while we have just 45 percent here in germany and most people will have to pay rent their whole life. there are 4x times more rolls royce sold in russia compared to germany (300 compared to 70 in 2021) so several hundrets per year, so its very clear that not only oligarchs buying them.
@K HAAS that is true, as typically in most countrys these days, the majority of ppl is concentrated in the citites. and land in places where a lot of ppl want to life is expensive, russia is no exception to this natural market rule of supply and demand, therefore you have to build upwards to be as profitable as possible. therefore as far as i could find studys, in russia 65 percent of the ppl indeed live in flats or apartments and 31 percent in houses, also 4 percent live in dormitories. (compared to germany approximately 56 percent live in apartments while 14 percent lived in semi-detached housing, where are the missing 30 percent is living is not listed, probably some sort of duplexes or idk as it statet semi-detached before). the fact that the home owner rate in ex soviet countrys is that high has two additional reasons, first one is that after the UDSSR collapsed most ppl already lived in an apartment that was more or less owned by some government structures, and in most cases they were able to take over this flat they already lived in for a very affordable price (just a couple thousend usd in most cases) and secondly because of the unpredictable economy (including pensions and nobody exactly knows how the future will look like) the focus of owning an home is much higher as in western countrys, as at aleast you want to have a place that is paid off if you get older, a secure place to stay, and maintanance cost in countrys like russia are traditionally and almost always will be very cheap (due high natural resources of gas and oil) so you will be able to survive when you are old on very small budget. natural gas for heating householdprice is just USD 0,007 per kWh (compared to germany USD 0,32 which is 45 times higher, and compared to USA its USD 0,06 8 times higher) , electricity is USD 0,063 per kWh (compared to germany USD 0,547 which is 7 times higher, and compared to USA its USD 0,18 3 times higher) stats from september 2022 but as i mentioned, you just can check google maps, after the ruble collapsed for few months after the invasion i was curious about real estate and prices in russia and checked the big online classified sites, and thats how i came across this fact that there is or must be indeed also a huge upper middle class in russia, as there are listed so manyy houses that are huge, and those are for sure to many to just be owned by elites (even if they probably also will own such similar or even bigger places too). please dont get me wrong as i not want state that russia is a fair counutry in concerns of distribution of wealth, and i am very sure there is a elite (like in most countrys, but probably even bigger there) that will be profiting from the autocratic regime, but still there are a lot of upper average middle class ppl also, probably like your average business man running a small production, trading-activity, shops and stores etc, otherwise it would not be possible to see this never ending scale of huge detached family homes in the outskirts of bigger cities. maybe also because russia is a much colder place too, and ppl invest more of their earnings into their homes if they can afford to, as they probably will stay much more inside instead of doing outdoor activities especially in autum and winter time idk

Some people like to go to the rich neighborhoods because they throw away more expensive trash :-)
IKEA leftovers... Still WAY too expensive.
9:25 for making "riced" potatoes
French Coffee makers. I use mine to make a strong cup of coffee once in a while. And it's a backup for power outages. I can boil water on my grill.
I have always thought
IKea overpriced for the quality weather in North America or anywhere else.
Yes good for dorm or recent grad starting out but later replaced !
The shop was very small, and the prices very high. And we call them Tea Lights not tea candles (although they ARE candles 🙂)
Things are going to get crazy, please be careful.
Your personality is very atractive and charming❤❤❤
Keep posting more videos❤❤❤
so it is allowed to have yellow and blue colours after all😂 Not much in furniture or lamps
I'm pretty sure IKEA are still there, I think they own a shopping mall chain called mega in moscow.
Try the potato press someday. My children would call the potatos worms after going through the press. They were great to serve with a stew or similar dish where there is juice tomash them if you desire.
Is it for boiled potatoes?
@@StPetersburgme Yes, it is for boiled potatoes to make mashed potatoes.❤
@@StPetersburgmeI think you could also fry them. It just breaks the potatoes down for smoother faster cooking. Maybe for the onions also but i like to taste larger chunkier potatoes and onions.
Our family knows it as a "potato ricer," I suppose because the cooked potato comes out in pieces about the size and consistency of cooked rice.
@@StPetersburgme Sorry, should have said yes for boiled potatoes.
it is called a ricer and it makes wonderful mashed potatoes. the store sorely misses furniture
Are the assembly instruction cartoons just as confusing?
🤣 I will have to buy something there to check it.
I think the word for your garlic press is rusty, or rusted, not sure why it wasn't made of stainless steel though.🤔🤷♂️
Where do you live if you never been to Ikea store🤔
@@Lassemalten well there is one in Dublin but when I was building my house it wasn't there.
I live 1 hr 20 mins from it now but I've only gone into the store beside it decatlon.
For furniture my local town has lots of shops but I already have what I need.
I bought a small console table two years ago and for garden furniture I just got stuff locally.
@@paulgallagher6544 Alright, yeah guess Ikea is mostly in the capital of smaller countries
@@Lassemalten I am not sure if they plan or if there is a second one now. Iive in a town with 30,000 people and Dublin or just a bit closer Galway are the two near cities.
I would say befast has one but it is too far.
Ireland has 5 million people and we have lots of other stores with a lot of people with lots of money in the bank as well as people with debt.
But it is literally IKEA material. Even the price tag is the same. :)
I recognized the potato press right away.
Hello Ksenia!
Its all the old Hemnes collection. All old stock. Its on last chance in the real IKEA.
Beautiful video, but don't you think they are expensive?
Ikea was expensive. And the items that are tagged IKEA now are aldo expensive. But Swed House stuff goes with quite good prices.
@@StPetersburgme Beautiful, but please show us shops who sold cheaper goods, they are beyond or an average Russian. Thanks for video, was good and interesting. but we have to meet our budget.
Xenia you are a heroine !
Do they have a restaurant with swedish meatballs?
No, it is a very small store.
More likely dim sum.
@@expatexpat6531 it's actually a company from Belarus so it would be traditional potato dish then
Immagine the Z patriots singing: Я РУССКИЙ with those cheap tacky cushions while I am on my leather sofa in England.
Trapped.
as a swedish guy this is very wierd
Nice Job ! Higher Prices it seems in smaller store and still selling previous stock with IIKEA tags !
Personally not fan of iIKEA as prefer all Hardwood Furniture! Lean more Traditional New England style as built to last !
Ikea is NOT cheap in Ireland.... I never buy stuff there...overpriced and not good quality
@@Natashanjka This is a good thing. Wider choice, better prices
Ikea had several factories in Russia. The company left last summer. I do not know what happened to those plants but it seems that Ikea was not able to find a buyer.
@@smk7516 Sorry for that
Great content ❤😊
How are you Sweet Xenia?
Many Chinese manufacturered items.
As always, you make very good videos and I enjoy watching them. Please understand that many of your viewers, like me. are politically oriented, but you should not be worried or even concerned. I am looking for possible indicators that American sanctions have had on the Russian economy, simply because I am oriented towards the interests of my nation. Looking at a Russian perspective however, you seem to do a good job displaying many good things of your nation. I would be very pleased with your work if I was the leader of Russia. As an American, I am certainly not angry with anything you have showed us either. You are very pleasant, and I watch your work objectively. I absolutely care about the well-being of the Russian people as I do my own fellow Americans. Please continue your work.
My friends in Russia says its all made in china like Ikea . Its totalt same
a privet business is independent from a government, so why leave !!!!!!!
Some stuff was not bad price and other stuff like the furniture was way over priced
FINALLY THE EGGS HAVE DROPPED TO $24 FOR 12, yeah❤❤❤❤❤

But do they have Swedish meatballs and ligonberry?😅
Swedish house
Decent replacement. From a Finnish point of view, not that cheap. But I am not so sure have I really visited IKEA ever at here so hard to compare.
Did you start a new job in Moscow, moving to Moscow, or just a temporary committment?
She went to Moscow for a few days to work in her company's headquarters. She still lives in Saint Petersburg. She is waiting for her "paperwork" to be processed so that she can relocate to Bulgaria. That could take up to a year or more.
You should have bought the cup and plate as u travelled 40 mins by train to get there .... and spent the day at the office too 🤔
I live in the USA. Very small IKEA stores have popped up in malls.
Swed house... Ahahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
(compared to germany approximately 56 percent live in apartments while 14 percent lived in semi-detached housing, where are the missing 30 percent is living is not listed, probably some sort of duplexes or idk as it statet semi-detached before). the fact that the home owner rate in ex soviet countrys is that high has two additional reasons, first one is that after the UDSSR collapsed most ppl already lived in an apartment that was more or less owned by some government structures, and in most cases they were able to take over this flat they already lived in for a very affordable price (just a couple thousend usd in most cases) and secondly because of the unpredictable economy (including pensions and nobody exactly knows how the future will look like) the focus of owning an home is much higher as in western countrys, as at aleast you want to have a place that is paid off if you get older, a secure place to stay, and maintanance cost in countrys like russia are traditionally and almost always will be very cheap (due high natural resources of gas and oil) so you will be able to survive when you are old on very small budget. natural gas for heating householdprice is just USD 0,007 per kWh (compared to germany USD 0,32 which is 45 times higher, and compared to USA its USD 0,06 8 times higher) , electricity is USD 0,063 per kWh (compared to germany USD 0,547 which is 7 times higher, and compared to USA its USD 0,18 3 times higher) stats from september 2022
but as i mentioned, you just can check google maps, after the ruble collapsed for few months after the invasion i was curious about real estate and prices in russia and checked the big online classified sites, and thats how i came across this fact that there is or must be indeed also a huge upper middle class in russia, as there are listed so manyy houses that are huge, and those are for sure to many to just be owned by elites (even if they probably also will own such similar or even bigger places too). please dont get me wrong as i not want state that russia is a fair counutry in concerns of distribution of wealth, and i am very sure there is a elite (like in most countrys, but probably even bigger there) that will be profiting from the autocratic regime, but still there are a lot of upper average middle class ppl also, probably like your average business man running a small production, trading-activity, shops and stores etc, otherwise it would not be possible to see this never ending scale of huge detached family homes in the outskirts of bigger cities. maybe also because russia is a much colder place too, and ppl invest more of their earnings into their homes if they can afford to, as they probably will stay much more inside instead of doing outdoor activities especially in autum and winter time idk
Are they serving Swedish meatballs?
No
