passenger services finished in the early 70's, my older brother caught the train to whitebridge high . I remember playing on the track and around fernleigh tunnel in the late 60's early 70's
Platform 3 at Adamstown was never connected to the Belmont line it was used for a relief line for freight trains entering Broadmeadow rail yards. Belmont trains stopped on Adamstown platform 1 heading to Belmont and on platform 2 heading to Newcastle. There was a crossover just north of Adamstown station before the junction to Belmont and I believe that it is still there today.
wow I use to as a kid jump on the coal carriages at Adamstown to go out to Belmont to the beach, and remembering having to walk from Belmont to Adamstown.
I watched a video some time ago of the last train from Darling Colliery. Was a sad sight(being a rail buff) as the line was still being used for coal haulage up until that point. I'll have to try and find the video, but if my memory serves me correctly there was still a modest passenger service running until that point. The photo source mentioned on the information signage (Adamstown via Fernleigh) is a recommended read for anyone wanting in depth history of the line.
Mate Your abandon videos are good but you should redo the videos this time with a Go Pro to your helmet and riding a Bike so your videos can be more fluid
It's not hard to tell you're not a local lol. Bit of constructive criticism and some clarifications for you. 1: Get some local knowledge from someone who's lived there for 40 years or more if you don't know the area and its history, the information on those signs is incomplete at best and misleading at worst. BTW Kahibah is pronounced Kah-High-Bah (why can no-one from outside of Newcastle correctly pronounce our suburb names). 2: The added concrete in the Fernleigh Tunnel roof was added prior to the bike track and was to sure up the roof of the Tunnel due to damage from the December 1989 Newcastle Earthquake and subsequent damage from groundwater seepage through the surrounding rock strata and the tunnel lining. 3: The photos shown of passenger trains would have been some of the last passenger trains to use the line, around that time (early 70's) many local lines became unprofitable for passenger service and were used for hauling coal only thereafter (the Maitland to Cessnock passenger service was discontinued at the same time even though the line still services Pelton Colliery). 4: Platform 3 at Adamstown was once close to the same length as platform 2 (around 3-4 metres shorter at the Southern end) it was used primarily by freight train crews for crew changes during the 1980's and was still in use at times into the 90's. The associated track was not removed until an upgrade of the level crossing in around 2010 and unstable sections of the platform were removed at that time. As far as I'm aware passenger trains to Belmont used platform 1 and returning trains from Belmont used platform 2 not platform 3. 5: As you could easily see from Whitebridge Station most of the Station platfroms along the line were simple earth embankments with timber retaining walls, most were virtually destroyed by the elements by the time the line was closed to rail traffic and several were rebuilt (to a degree) during the construction of the Cycleway.
michael pearson Firstly, it's not meant for motorbikes Secondly thats way to fast Thirdly the track ain't meant to be a highway for motorcyclists And lastly it is actually super dangerous, even the cyclists are fast let alone bikeys going 100km/h
I really hope they reopen the line one day, or even run a light rail service down the track. Thanks for the video Phil.

It's beautiful. The tunnel is like a piece of art. Thanks.
+Sharon Mullins Thank you :)
No worries.
What's the time you get to the tunnel.. luv tunnels 🌿💗🌿
2020 got to the tunnel 💗💗💗
@@kerrileelawrence2402 I like the view of the landscape above the portal and the fact a train is going under it all, totally autonomous from it.
16:49 that is the remains of fernleigh signal box
I enjoy watching these walking videos especially on a rainy day.
Passenger services ended in the early 70s which marked the end of the Belmont to John darling colliery section..
I never knew any of this was there and I used to live at Redhead for years lol
I had no idea that there was even an Adamstown to Belmont railway branch. Great video and thanks for the information.
My pop used to jump on the back of the trains to get into town and sometimes just for fun

the station that starts with K is Kahibah

i was there last night
Great video, keep up the good work! I do have a question, Are there abandoned home developements in Australia like there are here in the US?
Thats Awsome
They should've retained the rail line and ran vintage CPH "Tin Hare" rail motors along its length fro Adamstown to Belmont.
Agreed. Then it could have had the best of both world's. Cycle access and tourism potential.
@@TheServerGeek Nah, keep the rail line and run classic rail motors on it.
@@neilforbes416 its been abandoned since 1971
@@youtubeviewer7030 It's a cycleway now.
@@neilforbes416 well thats good
