Ethel was my favorite character. In the States, they showed East Enders back in the early 90's on PBS and some cast members made appearances to raise money during membership drives.
A lot of that generation seemed like that. I felt the same about my grandparents. Everything about them seemed very old fashioned. But then I think the modern world had arrived so quickly, they couldn’t really - and didn’t want to - keep up with it.
Yes, it's classic. Reminds me of the year before when they started filming Cluedo as a games show, and June Whitfield as the Mrs White character told the audience she was "paranotic" (paranoid) and should the "studio defectives be making such insinuating remarks" against her! Classic.
"I got a new packet in 'ere, I'm sure I have", a little ad-lib from June Brown, not only an ad-lib but a little nod to one of June's real life friends who told June about a new brand of menthol cigarette that had come out (the Berkeley menthol), both swapped from smoking Consolate menthol king size cigarettes to Berkeley menthol super king size menthol.
Yes Dot was brilliant with her smoking and nobody smoked a cigarette like Dot ! Nowadays you cant buy menthol anymore - the powers that be have banned them !
@@SimonandJojo Ive tried roll ups - not for me so i have to be ripped off and buy cigs.Shocking price now and even packs of 10 are banned ! You said that scene took over 2 hours to film !!!! thats terrible when they are both old pros at acting i thought they would have it in the can in 10 mins first take.
@@feeltheforce10 no it didn't take 2 hours, it would have been 10,mins , not even that with June and Gretchen, I never commented on the time, I just commented on June changing her lines as a reference to my partner telling June about a new brand of menthol cigarettes being super king size and cheaper than Consolate menthols, my partner and June were best friends, a friendship that lasted till June's death in April, a total of 37 years. When June went over to Berkeley menthol she added that line "I got a new packet in 'ere, I'm sure I have"

You gotta love that she used her best friends husbands death as an excuse to get pissed for free down the pub 😂😂😂

Ethel was such a great character in the early days so sorely missed
Wow! Decreased on the M25? So Charlie Cotton must've been the shirt found decreased on M25.
Love Ethel she always got her words muddled
Decreased? Why was Charlie wrinkled
Id forgotten how funny Ethel was.

Ethel and Dot were born old

Dot took Charlie's death almost too easy.
Riley Sutton Well he was a waste of space.
Agreed. Much like the son, who's a hundred times worse. And bless, broken the news by a child police boy.
Partly shock.

Catherine Tate's Nan always reminded me of Ethel, not the nastiness but the body language.
Thought you just made a typo on the title but nope!
That police officer's face looks like he could be related to Charlie himself, looks like his son 🤔
Ethel and Sharon in the pub, my two all time favourite characters
