For me, the nasty black oil represents life. Before he grew up he had unrealistic expectations about life, and what will happen to him (''we thought we'd be doing something great by now''). As life goes along, we kinda realise that those expectations weren't right. So when he tries to give the plant water and would expect water coming out, instead black oil (life and its weird twists and turns) comes out. At the end he just accepts the bitter sweet taste of life.
This song captures that feeling of not quite meeting the potential you thought you had... or the malaise of settling for something not exactly bad, but less.
I work for Vodafone, and I just had to Google the lyrics just to see which shite wetwipes were responsible for making my life a misery as I sit in a seemingly never ending queue waiting to warm transfer some angry Karen who's wrongly come through to my department expecting me to solve her billing and all the worlds problems
Man, I'm sure I ain't the only one but damn this song fucks with me. I wasn't a "gifted" kid by any means, but I did well with basically no effort, until highschool. I started performing and stopped giving a damn about school grades, and ended up failing a class (I know, one class isn't that bad) but I'll never forget that shame. Fast forward a year after graduating and I discovered a passion for teaching. I figured I'd just breeze through college and become a teacher real fast, after all it only takes 4 years for a BA right? 7 years later I'm half way towards my associates. No one to blame but myself, but man there's nothing like seeing friends and family who weren't even in high school when you graduated getting degrees before you. "We thought we'd be doing something great" definitely describes me at least. thanks for the song.
Remember when i used to be obsessed with fossils, young chasers et tshirt weather. I came back and u guys are still here but still unknown that makes me sad :(
As a lover of Lemonboy by Cavetown, I am elated that this song is so good. It is so terribly depressing and I can’t pull myself away from relishing in that disappointed angst.
I thought the music video about a bunch of kid listing for war Like the vietnam war where a bunch of ppl were drafted most of them young and a couple of years ago they were drinking lemonade and now signing the dotted line and that dotted line is commonly associated with the dotted line to enlist in the Military and there were parts saying sign up for peace to intervene which something America does specially during the vietnam war and also the line the rich ones love to lie is i think a reference to rich ppls avoiding the draft
"We thought we'd be doing something great by now..."
That line's been resonating with me. Amazing tune.
