Thanks for visiting us! In two weeks the Cod will be awarded the Navy "E" for Excellence regarding Ship Preservation. 80 years old and still getting military awards. We must be doing something right. Thanks again for the video and love.
Just visited Cod two weeks ago. I recommend getting there at opening time on a weekday. My friend and I had the boat basically to ourselves to take our time and really look at the details. I've been a sub fan for a long time, but even i learned a few things I didn't know, like the fact that all the various valves in the compartments have their purpose stamped into the valve handle itself. The power panel in the forward-starboard corner of the control room is crazy! With all those blade switches you can understand how dangerous and fatal even a little flooding in there could be. And there is that museum ship smell.... You don't forget that. Such a great museum.
It is a pretty amazing ship and experience to be able to actually walk through and take it all in. Yes, the smell is also memorable. I was amazed that the crew was all volunteer.
It’s amazing how far our technology has come with our naval crafts. As a ex navel wife it always amazed me how big these little cities on water were designed. God bless America
What an amazing Tour! Thanks so much for posting this. Great music and audio tour recordings! Interesting to see just how similar and yet how different these US subs were from German Uboats. Mainly, it appears the US subs had better amenities and more crew space. Also, 4 diesel engines powering electric batteries or motors, as opposed to Uboats that either powered the batteries through the generators or directly turned the shafts through direct coupling of engines to the shafts through the motor shafts.
@@MindfulMuddlers Look I started this whole thing started and I worked with Diesel Dave , his daughter Amanda introduced us in May of 2001, so when we rebuilt the main, somebody forgot to put the screws on after the restoration ❓❓❓ I insisted that the deck gun get working that the rudder gets fixed, and his screws get attached it's obvious the restoration isn't done yet ❓❓❓ David Staudohar USMC USN SS USCG retired , the damn submarine is worthless unless it can function on its own power, let's change it from a deficit to an asset, we can build its own special dock and sell submarine rides ❓❓❓
7:03 for those who are questioning why there's a pair of striped pajamas on the bed in the Captain's quarters there was very a devoted captain of the cod who would sleep in the conning tower to be able to jump right on the pericope and immediately begin fighting as quickly as possible and he slept naked because it gets so hot inside the sub that the only way to stay cool while sleeping was to do it without any clothes and one day he went to battle from that sleeping position naked and his crew and some of the stewardesses on board suggested he should put some clothes on to be a bit more properly dressed as captain so they bought him a set of striped pajamas it became such a massive yet extremely funny story amongst that crew in particular that at that crew's specific reunion the crew gave their captain a set of striped pajamas as a joke about that incident so the people that maintain the sub have those pajamas on the Captain's bed as a sort of rememberance and tribute to that time
Thanks for sharing. I’m local and love having this beauty here in town.

This was the first time I had an opportunity to see anything like it. Amazing the number of men that lived on it.
@@MindfulMuddlers my ex was on aircraft carriers. 5000 sailors when fully staffed and underway. A small city literally. Lol
@@donnaokeefe6463 Thats amazing, small city for sure.
I didn't want it to end!

Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the fact you need a doctorate to use the toilet at depth.
Pretty amazing machine.

Boy that bottom bunk across from the galley would give me claustrophobia lol
Yes, and I never knew that they volunteered for duty on submarines.
