People don’t hate Cato Sicarius because he is arrogant, most Space Marine characters are, but people dislike him because he used to be written very poorly and was a massive merry sue who could never lose. He is the perfect example of the problem Ultra marines used to have wher they win every situation no matter what without much struggle, which is bad writing since nothing they do has stakes.
Cato Sicarius is to over power at times it just becomes disingenuous to the established lore of 40k although he has been toned down recently and become a better more fleshed out character. Now Kaldor Draigo is just the worst I absolutely hate him with a burning passion. He’s way to overpowered to the point of being absolutely stupid like when he beat Mortarion, for a comparison of Kaldor beating Mortarion would be like Superman losing to an average guy who goes to the gym
Erebus gave us 40k essentially, without him the whole series changes. He’s not OP, he’s not supposed to be liked, but when he shows up you know he’ll get shit done for the bad guys and you hate him because of it. But that’s intentional, if you didn’t hate the main villain, the villain is not doing their job right.
Erda's extremely recent, like from the most recent 30k Horus Heresy finale plotline type of recent. The whole Primarch scattering plot already has multiple versions to it already with the OG being Chaos Gods did it then its time travel Word Bearers going back in time to doing the deed. Now its a stupid character dooming her sons to the worst the galaxy has to offer believing that throwing it to random luck will save your children from being used as Generals in a galaxy conquering destiny. A Mother, a Psyker and one of the most ancient 'Human' characters in the setting at the period should know better until Erebus shanked her. Now there's buzz the writers are going to decanonize that whole mess and toss her to the side to fix the timeline.
I haven't read any of the older books on Cato Sicarius, I know the memes and some of his lore. But in the book Knights of Macragge all the bluster and arrogance has been drained from him for being stuck in the warp on his ship trying to keep the crew and his brothers alive for years. Like the young brash boy grew up to be a man. Erda being there, as is ,to me as a reader was useless so I pretty much have ignored her existence. Kaldro Draigo is just Doom Slayer in Warhammer 40k.

And as much as Erebus engages in self-aggrandizement, he ultimately chose to side with Chaos out of his own selfish-desires and he doesn't try to dress it up in any other way. And something you need to understand, people can love a character without condoning their actions. It's about how much enjoyment one gets from reading about them or watching them in action. An apt comparison that comes to mind is Jack Horner from "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish". Even though he's a villain that viewers will cheer at when he gets what he deserves, he's portrayed in such an over-the-top yet honest way that it's hard not to have fun watching him do his thing. He knows what kind of evil monster he is and not only revels in it, but just has fun with it. Erebus is much the same way... No one who likes him or loves to hate him will ever condone his behavior nor would they strive for it themselves (At least I hope not 'cause DAMN...), but that doesn't mean they don't have fun reading about him, about the lengths he goes to in order to achieve his goals and all the strides and stumbles he experiences along the way. And he's definitely the kind of character that when he gets what he has coming to him, it just makes you feel good knowing such a bastard got his comeuppance. EDIT: And honestly, if you're looking for good guys then you're not going to find them in Warhammer 40K. Every faction in this setting, and I do mean EVERY faction, is evil to some degree. There are literally no good guys in this setting. Even Vulkan isn't above this, considering he once burnt an alien child alive essentially for the "crime" of existing. The Imperium of Man, the defacto "protagonists" of this setting frequently engages in war-crimes, genocides, civil oppression, and has wiped out entire civilizations. And the space marines? Yeah, they're basically indoctrinated child-soldiers; at least in the sense that they're taken as children and forced to undergo training and challenges that'll likely kill all but 1-3 out of 100.
When you say a character is 'great', you mean they're entertaining or interesting, not you think they're a good person. The Joker is a great character because he's the embodiment of Chaotic Evil and a great foil to Batman. You're not supposed to like him as a person, but you can appreciate him and smile when he's on screen.
Honestly most old fans of 40k probably like characters like Seth or maybe the Lion (heresy era). Really the issue with Cato is bad writing. Sticking with DBZ refrences a lot of Cato's feats would be like if Yamcha 1 shot Freiza and started bragging about it. You can make that work but you need to write that carefully. Also he has Leandros energy with his politics other characters don't like him because he'll go behind people's backs to snitch on them if he thinks it will get him ahead.

Like Geoffry from Game of Thrones was so hated the actor got death threats which sucks but that also means the character was so good it got that reaction out of people which was the point. Erebus is a psychopath straight up. He's design to be hated but when he's on stage ooh do you want to see him get beaten. Feel like everyone loved the duel between him and Khan. Great character hope he suffers for all eternity.
the difference between Erebus and leandros is in the end, Erebus didn't get rewarded from chaos gods like he wish. he basically gets nothing while leandros gets rewarded for betraying us and climb to respectable ranks among space marines
Lucius is indeed a better Duelist than Vulkan, Vulkan is much stronger certainly and Lucius could even scratch Vulkan but still a better duelist, also are we getting Templin Institute Cadia??
Yeah, Vulcan would most likely win in a 1v1 versus Lucius due to power. But that doesn't make him a better duelist. Honestly, as much as I love the guy, Vulcan doesn't even rank among the top 5 best duelists of the primarchs.
