    This is a great video! I believe one of the reasons why Khabib is so effective against other highly experienced wrestlers is that he did both judo and sambo (and sambo includes judo elements) so he was able to mix in moves other wrestlers weren't used to!
    I do have a question - I see a lot of wrestlers will wrestle with their hips all the way back for defensive purposes. Judo stance is a lot more upright which is fine because they won't get their legs shot at. But I wonder if there is a way to capitalize / counter just how far back a wrestlers hips are? Or is that just too defensive for a judoka to work with?

    • @liammullen2144
      @liammullen2144 2 года назад +2

      Maybe you could try using some type of a sacrifice throw where you throw your body towards their legs and pull them forward over top of you, although that is risky. You could also try a scissor takedown

      The classic move is a snapdown when their hips are too far back. I think of it like this:
      -Their hips are too close (no space to turn), go for lifting takedowns and bodylock throws
      -Their hips are a medium-distance away (you have space to turn), turning throws are best
      -Their hips are way, way back (too far for turning throws), go for snap downs

    Was there another video on this? Ive seen a variation on another channel of a clinch to do yoko tomeage ( if I remember correctly. Except its a deep clinch fore arm behind the head and your other hand pushing their elbow into your center. It works surprisingly well actually

      Actually managed a sorta Osoto gari from collar tie and elbow grip. Cup the back of head/neck and drive forearm into chest then a sloppy osoto gari. Would it work on someone who isnt a white belt?

    • @noway2451
      @noway2451 Год назад +1

      @@JamesSongCovers Something that works for me is
      collar tie + elbow control
      threaten osoto gari (if they dont react just go for it)
      when they pull their leg back use the space and go for koshi guruma
      this is a neat little combo and seems to work decently well even against fairly competent people.

    2. Which is why he likes to use front headlocks and double unders (bodylock). He give examples towards the 2nd half of the video

    Judo looks like it has alot to offer on the defensive or against the momentum. The turn throwing especially. What adaptations need to be made to apply them to nogi? Can you foot sweep without grips, just head control or something? cheers

  • @maxikozie
    @maxikozie Год назад +2

    Shintaro I think you're underselling judo - no gi judo isn't just wrestling. E.g. wrestling mostly throws people on their butts, judo throws people (harder) on their back. And wrestlers drop to their knees much more which is less nice for a street situation. Judo is valuable!

    I compete in Armored Combat and we use Judo as much as we can, but there's no gi to grab and we're essentially wearing snow mittens on our hands, so grabbing is hard. We do a lot of grabbing around the head and underhooks. Sometimes a bell on a gauntlet can be grabbed, but it's not a sure thing. I find shoving someone's head way off center helps set things up

    Good thing we dont walk around naked...and if you are not talking about sportive judo, are you talking about a real fight? Then no one would assume this wrestling lower position with the head in front and hips back cause it exposes your face. Or is it Judo elements for a wrestling match?
    But good video though, its nice to explore different aspects of fighting

    • @filippobertone4255
      @filippobertone4255 2 года назад

      The “we don’t walk around naked” argument, while true for some countries, doesn’t quite hold up in a lot of other countries. Here in Italy during winter season everybody wears heavy jackets which are perfect for Gi-Grappling, but as soon as summer comes everybody wears a shirt.
      Have you ever tried a traditional Judo grip on a t-shirt? You either gonna break it (so you’ll lose all the leverage and end up in a shitty position) or not be able to grab it at all.
      To conclude, I agree with you 100% that wrestling’s stance sucks for self defense. I believe that leg grabs for real combat should always be initiated from a straight posture, just like in mma (most of the times)

    • @markjohnson4643
      @markjohnson4643 2 года назад

      That's why i train in BJJ, you can use it regardless of what people are wearing. I dont need a gi to hold onto to break your arms and legs and choke you out 🤷‍♂️
