If you aren't interested in the basic stations, there are a few servers that run on different rule sets. My personal favorite is Frontier Station, where you can buy a ship or join a crew to make money in the expanse of space.
I was here before this blew up! I have a feeling this one's gonna hit the algorithm because I don't even watch space station 14 content and it got recommended.

@@thatboywagsthat sentence is always goes to scientific department. Like. How in the world did you manage to fuck up to the point that it even effect the whole space station. Or why the hell you let an anom goes critical and making it ass for engineer to fix the spacing issue.
The feeling of nostalgia this brought me back from when I just started hit DEEP. When your just starting there’s a feeling around you where you don’t get what’s going on around you but it’s still extremely fun, and I’m glad to see more people get into it and you enjoy it. I hope you look around with the other servers too and enjoy your stay! Also, being thrown into SS14 first instead of SS13 is possibly the best way to adjust to the learning curve cause… well, if you’ve even seen the character menu it’s enough to send you into a shock.
That's definitely how I felt my first few times playing. There was so much happening around me but I was just so thankful someone was taking the time and showing me how to make drinks as a bartender. I'll never forget making my first drink successfully and then the whole bar cheering for me 😂 Yeah, I've seen a little bit of 13 already, and just from that small bit, I could tell it's a higher learning curve for sure.
This looks so cool! I’m glad I can always rely on your videos to show off really cool games that deserve more attention. Keep it going dude, you’re doing amazing
I remember encountering Space Station 13 years ago. But it just wasn't for me. That being said, it was the first thing I thought of when Among Us began gaining popularity. It's nice to see that it got a remake, and it's even nicer to see that it's running strong.
tbh even if you dont like ss13 ss14 is still worth a shot as its quite early in development so is much less complicated and the controls are much easier to understand.
The best part about SS14, is that as crazy and advanced as it is, it still has a ton coming up in the future (as it's predecessor, SS13 somehow has a ton of features that won't reach SS13 for a bit, but SS14 also does some unique things which are still noticeable differences between the two).
Thanks Butcher! I've watched a few of your videos as well and enjoy the content you make on the game! It's been fun getting involved with it. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@thatboywagsYeah, SS14 is a considerably simplified remake of SS13, which is much less "noob" friendly. Reason why it's always been a rather niche game, having a very, very steep learning curve. Having to learn the billion hotkeys, the billion complicated "realistic" mechanics that are still far from coming to SS14 (technically being still a mere alpha/beta of 13, missing a crapton of content), having to deal with the archaic, convoluted UI on the same levels of a MMORPG, having also to remember by memory which commands and keys to use for each specific action or radio channel, the more "zealous" people of certain servers being pretty unwelcoming to new players or just shitters/hostile in general... It's not easy.
@@FunnyStripes There is also the added issue when it comes to SS13.. Where both UI and control schemes also depend on the codebase said server is using. Because there are several different ones that exist for the game and some are extremely different. SS14 so far that I have seen.. For the most part seems to share the same codebase.
@@sean7221 BYOND can load external code, that's how the TG interface system for machines and such exist, so it isn't as limiting as people put it, the main factor here is just that it's code that has been reused for 20 years, and that's bad.
I've been playing Space Station 13 since 2015. Absolutely love it. I'm happy that there is finally a remake that isn't on the decades old BYOND engine.
Awe that's so cool to hear! It's awesome I have the opportunity to introduce people to new games they might like. I'm glad you're having a good time with it!
One of my favorite rounds was when a space dragon invaded the station, most people were dead, the only survivors (as far as i know) were scientists, and a few other people who we got into science, we researched weaponry and began retaking the station, we even had a chant! I don't think we killed the dragon :(
glad to see another person made some ss14 content!! this game dosent have many active youtubers besides a few… but it’s nice to see more people playing, recording, and having a blast playing this masterpiece of a game!!! this is such a good summary, and id love to see more videos from you in the future on ss14! and just a quick question, you ever play on something like frontier station? it’s one of my favorites because of the playability especially with friends!
I have not played frontier yet unfortunately but I've heard great things and have seen some fun gameplay of it. I think the whole idea of working with a small crew makes me nervous because I'm still new and don't want to ruin anyone else's experience. But hopefully I'll try it soon! And as for future videos, I'd love to come back to SS14 for another. Maybe down the road.
totally understandable, that’s probably the same reason I held off on frontier as well. it’s kinda like salvage specialist, but like, a lot cooler and with friends. you can buy ships and fly around to asteroids and mine them, me and mine found and old ship full of crates the second another ship docked onto the same old ship.
Love the video, but I do wanna say that I hope you keep doing Shadows of Doubt videos. I love that there’s a channel that takes that game on and gives it exposure it needs
SoD will always be around on the channel and I'll most likely always come back to it at some point. The community has grown my channel in a huge way. I have some more content for it coming soon!
Oh, wait, I didn't know you played SS14! Makes sense, I suppose. The heavy interaction of a bunch of deep mechanics to create a chaotic but internally-logical (by cartoon logic at least) world in which you have freedom to improvise toward your character's goals overlaps somewhat with Shadows of Doubt, as does the investigation theme somewhat (depending on role and game mode), with the extra addition of the extra social aspect and chaos source from it being (very) multiplayer. I'm kind of obsessed with this kind of 'graphical MUD/first-generation-MMORPG' style of 'sandbox' game design even though AFAIK it's largely extinct other than the 'living fossil' of SS13/SS14. To think about it crossing over with... -- Immersive sims? I guess you'd call SoD an immersive sim? -- is interesting to me. Maybe not all the lessons of those games were lost to the industry, even though mechanics-heavy immersive sims are also... let's say endangered. They at least have some 'horizontal gene transfer' with mainstream lineages like first person shooters, at least historically. I suppose there's also some crossover of SS13-like games with mechanics-heavy traditional roguelikes like Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead and their realtime and/or multiplayer descendants/imitators/re-imaginings (Project Zomboid, etc.), but that's more of a stretch, and again, not a mainstream genre. It's a pity, I had presumed that games would get more complex and simulationist (not necessarily simulating reality, simulating SOME kind of internally-consistent world) as technology advanced, but in large part they didn't. Sure, the cosmetic portions of the presentation -- IK, graphics, facial animation, etc. -- got more elaborate (and MUCH more expensive), but largely the games industry seems to focus on mechanically simpler titles. I can't really think of much actual new 'gameplay tech' that has developed since the 2000s. Really, the budgets (and amount of management) have ballooned to the point where you can never risk a project that 'some people might not get', I suppose. It's mostly only in niche indie spaces where you see really complicated or unusual games being attempted, and by nature then they don't have the budget to get too wild with research and development. I guess I can just hope for a renaissance of mechanically complicated games as the shift to open-source engines, libraries, etc. put more technically-challenging games within the reach of smaller and more niche teams every year.
Great quick look into the game, theres nothing more I could think to add for the 'base' game. Some of the other servers have different focuses than the main game, Defo go and check out Frontier Station. Thats all about crewing your own ships and making money that persists between rounds. Also has less antagonist influence.
Oh, there's a lot in SS13 that hasn't yet made it to 14 yet but could. Surgery is like one of the really big mechanics. with things like broken bones, internal bleeding, limb replacements, implants etc. There are also a bunch of antags that haven't made it to 14 yet, like blob, sentient virus and terror spiders (I think? or are they added already?). Another big one is the station AI role.
@@Kenionatus yea a lot of antags are missing and magic is more or less nonexistant unless an admin does an event, even then there are only magic staffs and no actual independent spells. I have heard that surgery is coming soon though, so lets hope for that. There are big spiders but they are all the same and there is no brood mother so typically people take the fifteen or so ghost roles fight for a bit kill some people then die and life goes on. They can make webs but unless they actually try to make a nest, which I've never seen someone do, it doesn't matter except for spiders placing webs in combat to slow people.
@@Kenionatus I more meant that the tutorial covers how things go in the usual server, not what features have been added to the game from SS13. As always, surgery is only a week away
Frontier turned me off entirely when the Station Traffic Controller basically chewed me out for not using their proper docking procedure when I was just starting out. I'm totally into RP, but the entire attitude was just such a turnoff. Like, let me just do shit for a while and maybe fuck off with your procedures at first, would ya? I really wanted to like it too, which was a bummer, because learning the ropes of that Server is a huge hurdle compared to other Servers, as losing money risks crippling you for a _long_ time unless you just reroll or Crew up. Like, the effort of just getting set up, learning to fly and be self-sustainable and actually financially functional was challenging and complex enough without me being stepped on by some hyper-stressed, power tripping STC. I don't think I'll be coming back to Frontier, which is a shame, because I really did want to like it.
This was a great video, Wags! I bounced off of 13 a long time ago, but started playing 14 about a week ago (on Delta- V.) It's just... incomparable. Everyone is typically pretty chill (unless they're stressed out, which is bound to happen,) but the level of RP on display and people just being fun to be around is such an experience. If you're already decent at RP, the only issue you'll really have to get around is adapting to the game mechanically and learning the responsibilities of each role, some of which are legitimately intense both RP and gameplay-wise (Medical, Security) and/or mechanically complex (Chemistry, Engineering/Atmos). I've never played a game where both my real life experience (as actual, real life Security) and my writing experience have been so compatible. Truly a unique experience. Edit: I recommend starting out in Botany, Science/Epistemics (on Delta) or Cargo, as they're all pretty reasonable and chill departments that operate on their own timetable and have combinations of complexity and simplicity that allow you to dive as deep as you want into the game's systems without necessarily getting overwhelmed. Also, don't worry about getting anxious or shy at first when people come up and ask you for things, it's perfectly understandable to just not _know_ things at first. That's why the "A" roles of Cadet/Assistant/Intern exist by department, so you don't have to worry about getting chewed out too bad if you screw up. If you accidentally let the Clown take your department's Autolathe, it just might lead to hilarious hijinks! That being said, Roles are typically on a first-come-first-serve basis, so if you end up in a Department you're unfamiliar with, don't worry about it. Take advantage of the learning opportunity. For non-Department roles, Janitor is _always_ highly recommended as a Job to start with for new players because you're still useful to the ship as a member of the Crew (I always appreciate a good Jani), you get to interact with people at your own pace (typically) _and_ you usually get involved in ridiculous situations just by the nature of your work. There are a ton of reasons why it's one of the most quickly taken jobs in the game. And if you just want to chill, just Greytide us as Passengers or whatever. The worst case scenario is that you'll be ignored because you're Grey, letting you adapt at your own pace, and the best case scenario is that people will either just legitimately engage with you or use you as a hostage, letting you get swept up in how 14 _really_ works without having to commit to the innate stresses of actual, Departmental responsibility. You might even get Hired/Promoted or Deputized into a Department in an emergency, anyways, or better (worse, for me as Security) you might even become part of the Revolution to take over the Station!
Love the idea of this game, but when I play, it's all just players farting around. If there's a chef, he's trying to break into some part of the ship, not getting food for anyone.
I *WAS* wondering whether the title was a typo... because I do remember the game being Space Station 13. Seeing you play this, it's drastically different from what I had experienced years ago (when Sseth played it). Controls for the game was confusing as fuck. I remember going to a room with people, just asking "how to do X" or if they could teach me. Pressed / did some stuff that I didn't know. Then they told me that I jumped on a crate, did a backflip, landed on my neck, and now I'm paraplegic and I can't move. I don't know if that really / could happen, but yeah I couldn't move lol. Anyway, found out that SS14 is an "improvement" / project to improve SS13. So hopefully, I could actually play this time... but hot damn if that wasn't a funny experience.
@@thatboywags It's definitely a great game, I'd recommend it at some point. Although there are different kinds of servers like ones for serious roleplay and ones for more casual chaos
I'm sure you can tell from the video that I've been playing passenger, janitor, and engi a lot 😂 but if people really wanted me to, I'd love to go back for a second type of video.
Well its moreso that SS13 is an old game and that BYOND, the engine it runs on, is even older. To quote SSeth, a very popular game reviewer, “10/10, don’t play it. Because frankly, the servers can’t handle you all.” Due to SSeth making a review of SS13, his fanbase flocked to almost every server, causing a ‘tide’ of new players, who mainly played as Assistants (or Passengers, in SS14 terms) who, as part of their default uniform, wear grey jumpsuits. All in all, players mainly don’t like when people make reviews or view said reviews because that inevitably means another ‘Greytide’ hits the servers. (Greytide being a lot of assistants, clad in grey.) Of course I do not speak for everyone, to each their own. Also as someone who plays SS13.. Ew, Antimatter engine..
I made content for ss13 that's very similar to your style of content where you try to turn the game into more of an immersive TV show for the viewer. There's absolutely an audience for ss13/14 content in the style you make most of your shadows of doubt content.
That's actually awesome and a little relieving to hear because I've definitely been thinking about it. I'd love to do little story diaries of different rounds and narrate my experiences.
Oh there definitely is. I would recommend trying out 14 if you've never played any of them before and want to get an understanding. And the maybe try 13 once you know what you're doing. Because it has a LOT more to it.
They're not too bad, especially if you often play PC. A lot of the interactions are done via menu. So the majority is just learning how to work your inventory and the quick controls for certain things. Again, Liltenhead makes some great guides for beginners and points out controls you wouldn't normally realize right away.

I'm glad I could bring 14 to your attention, 13 definitely still has more content though. But if you come from 13, learning 14 should be a breeze.
Maybe I'll come back to it in the future for an actual gameplay video. I think it would definitely be fun.
Thanks for watching!
great video, never thought i'd actually play this game but i might now! would love to see some of the interesting rounds you play made into videos!
I'd love to hear your experience afterwards if you do end up trying it out!
And I've definitely thought about it!
I can only hope 🤞🤞
Thanks for watching!
Yeah this was a wonderful summary! You did a great job explaining the fun chaos that is "im just trying to do my job man..." I highly recommend the game
Pretty much 😂
I think my most used phrase in game is, "what the hell.." or "wtf.." because I'm always just reacting to something ridiculous happening. Meanwhile I'm just trying to mop and pick up trash
@@thatboywagsthat sentence is always goes to scientific department. Like. How in the world did you manage to fuck up to the point that it even effect the whole space station. Or why the hell you let an anom goes critical and making it ass for engineer to fix the spacing issue.

@@thatboywags I feel this, Wags. Mine are "What the shit," (as any Department member) and "Far out," as my roaming Tider. 😆
I'll never forget making my first drink successfully and then the whole bar cheering for me 😂
Yeah, I've seen a little bit of 13 already, and just from that small bit, I could tell it's a higher learning curve for sure.
This looks so cool! I’m glad I can always rely on your videos to show off really cool games that deserve more attention. Keep it going dude, you’re doing amazing
Really appreciate that man, thank you 👌
This is just an amazing presentation and introduction to the game, I absolutely loved this wild ride and hope you can have more success going forward.
I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for taking the time to watch!
@@thatboywags I hope to see ya soon on the station and have a nice time.
This video summed up the game really well. I'd love to see more SS14 content from you if you are up for it!
Thank you!
A lot of people are asking for it, so I might have to make it a priority.
new addiction unlocked, welcome to the club
Glad to be a part of it!
I'm glad you've found this game. I've played on and off for about 10 years, and some of the best gaming experiences have come from these games.
That's awesome, and I can definitely understand why you keep coming back to it over time.
I think it'll be a game that I play for a while to come.
Damn, I can't believe I missed you playing this. I would love to see some rounds uploaded if you still play.
Really interesting! Love the idea of RPing with others and working your way up the chain of command!
It's a super fun experience for sure! Especially since you can take it as your own pace.
Nice work! Yeah, ss14 is great! The depth to it is insane!
Thanks Butcher! I've watched a few of your videos as well and enjoy the content you make on the game!
It's been fun getting involved with it.
Thanks for checking out the video!
@@thatboywags Yay, I'm glad you liked them! :D
I've never heard of this game till i stumbled upon ur video 2 days ago and now i cant stop playing - would love to see more of this on your channel!
That's awesome I was able to introduce you to it! I've thought about making a gameplay vid for it, I'm still very much a novice tho 😂
you have insiperd me to play with my friend again thanks :)
That's awesome to hear! :)
Now, you try SS13 and get a new addiction
Maybe down the road. I'm still on a major learning curve with 14, and I've heard 13 is even more in depth
SS14 is fast catching up to SS13, the problem with SS13 is the client side / BYOND engine. It's trash and severely limits developers
I'd highly suggest trying it out. It has a lot less content on it, but it's an overall smoother experience from what I've heard.
@@thatboywagsyeah, i got banned in the smoothest way possible
I played 13 not very long and got 14 probably 4 days ago and started playing medic and had to deal with a bunch of snake attacks.
Man that was fun.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that since you posted this video I have played NOTHING ELSE. Thank you so much for introducing it to me.
Awe that's so cool to hear! It's awesome I have the opportunity to introduce people to new games they might like. I'm glad you're having a good time with it!
This reminds me of that one time I was on space station 13
I did not know Space Station 13 was real I was joking lol
Jokes on you, I was on Space Station 12
One of my favorite rounds was when a space dragon invaded the station, most people were dead, the only survivors (as far as i know) were scientists, and a few other people who we got into science, we researched weaponry and began retaking the station, we even had a chant! I don't think we killed the dragon :(
Yooooo its MEEEEEE 8:30 , Fr good video and i hope to see others join this game.
Love this game.

glad to see another person made some ss14 content!! this game dosent have many active youtubers besides a few… but it’s nice to see more people playing, recording, and having a blast playing this masterpiece of a game!!! this is such a good summary, and id love to see more videos from you in the future on ss14! and just a quick question, you ever play on something like frontier station? it’s one of my favorites because of the playability especially with friends!
SS13&14 are two of my favorite RP games!
I guess I can just hope for a renaissance of mechanically complicated games as the shift to open-source engines, libraries, etc. put more technically-challenging games within the reach of smaller and more niche teams every year.
you should definitely give ss13 a try because of the sheer diversity of code and quantity of servers that can feel like entirely different games
Welcome aboard, enjoy your stay.
Ss13(14) and Dwarf Fortress ate the greatest games ever made.
Great quick look into the game, theres nothing more I could think to add for the 'base' game.
Some of the other servers have different focuses than the main game, Defo go and check out Frontier Station. Thats all about crewing your own ships and making money that persists between rounds. Also has less antagonist influence.
I haven't tried out Frontier but it looks really cool. I'll probably try it out soon.
High level antag power gamers are basically untouchable legends on servers.
This was a great video, Wags! I bounced off of 13 a long time ago, but started playing 14 about a week ago (on Delta- V.)
It's just... incomparable.
Why does every round I play as HOP the round ends in a singu/tesla or both loose?
One of my brothers works on the game daily and codes stuff and fixes bugs for the game!
Love the idea of this game, but when I play, it's all just players farting around. If there's a chef, he's trying to break into some part of the ship, not getting food for anyone.
Haven't watched it yet but isn't it space station 13 not 14?

Thank god he reviewed SS14 and not SS13, lest theres another incident where BYOND has to struggle.
I'm guessing people aren't too nice about what they say about BYOND? 😂
(Greytide being a lot of assistants, clad in grey.)
Of course I do not speak for everyone, to each their own.
Also as someone who plays SS13..
Ew, Antimatter engine..
Im a SS13 player that moved to SS14 because Byond doesn't let you play games on linux, it's been quite fun so far.
Lasted 2 months wihout getting banned or they already gave you a voucher ban (the most idiotic ban to appeal)
Oh neat.
Neat indeed
I wonder if there's still a ton of content missing in 14 that's in 13
Oh there definitely is. I would recommend trying out 14 if you've never played any of them before and want to get an understanding. And the maybe try 13 once you know what you're doing. Because it has a LOT more to it.

Tried SS13 a while back but the controls were just to weird for me. Wish listed SS14 on steam. How are the controls for SS14?
They're not too bad, especially if you often play PC. A lot of the interactions are done via menu. So the majority is just learning how to work your inventory and the quick controls for certain things.
Again, Liltenhead makes some great guides for beginners and points out controls you wouldn't normally realize right away.
