In the 80’s, my year 11 legal studies class went on an excursion to Pentridge. It was a night excursion and it was to see a play the prisoners used to put on. After the show was over, I remember we were allowed to stay a short while and talk to the inmates. It was a very interesting night for sure. I’ve heard after the fact that some of the prisoners asked a few of the girls for their phone numbers. Cheeky buggers lol. Great video! Thanks for showing it to us!
The then Governor of HM Prison Pentridge was interviewed in an old documentary, and he said "I have got some prisoners in here who would make very good officers and some officers who would make very ordinary prisoners".
Good video, thanks for the tour of my former home, just greatful I made it out of there alive, yes I have stories, no I'm not telling them, I've moved on.
I worked in Pentridge when I was an apprentice electrician back in 1977. The company I worked for was contracted to do some work in there. We mainly worked in A division but also in H division. In A division we were amongst the prisoners but no chance whatsoever in H division. We never even got to see a prisoner as we were only allowed in after they were taken to the yards. Jika Jika became the new high security section. I didn’t realise that A division and H division were actually the same building that had a wall installed to separate them. Only found out after it closed and I did a tour.
Great vid. Thanks for the shout out. Sorry I missed joining you. I'm concerned I may have felt at home there... with my cell mate, and occasionally more, Bubba! Need to go and see a film there. Looks great. Also, there's a play written about Ronald Ryan. Really good. 🐻👍🏿
My husband was a prison officer at Pentridge and was still there when it closed. They had an open day for the families of staff just after the last prisoners were moved and we went along. I had worked for the police for 15 yrs so it was fascinating to me to see that side of it all. Our then young son had eyes like saucers, especially H Division, the controls were still all there for opening cells etc. I’m sure that helped our boy stay on the straight and narrow, it scared him to death, and to be honest, I found H division creepy as heck, but it still smelt of the prisoners so maybe that was it. My husband though became a germaphobe due to working in the system and so is our boy as an adult. Plus even at home he would think we were lying to him as he was lied to every day at work by crooks numerous times and it sort of became embedded in his brain. He went to Port Phillip after Pentridge closed, same crap just different venue. He’s in his 50’s now and is a parole officer, and a tough one 😂
I was a volunteer tour guide in 98 best part time job I ever had,it wasn't painted nice and clean back then when I worked there it was still very much a jail cells weren't that long empty and we had to get it ready for tourists before it opened, was really interesting for me....I grew up near by,next door to Coburg drive in and in the 80s as a kid it was Castle Grey Skull to me....we'd ride our push bikes as close to the wall as we could, the guards would Chuck apples at us and tell us to F off home 😂
thanks for commenting and sharing your story! Sorry to take so long to reply. Always nice to have people reach out who have an attachment to the prison!
@@AndysWorldJourneys I moved to bundaberg QLD in 2007 and haven't been back to the site. Looks like the hospital has been demolished that's a shame, whole place was painted pink inside, even the sinks were pink, they say it had a calming effect but I hated that section,as a guide you were either static or walking around with groups,I was only in there for 3 hrs at a time but that pink got to me..I dont see how it could have worked tbh.
That’s hysterical! My hubby worked there but much later so he didn’t throw fruit at you. Did get to go in there though just after the last prisoners had been removed and it was creepy, especially H division. He was very happy there though but he got a tough streak in him which you need to have to do that work, or be a copper. He took no shit and still doesn’t. Sometimes made him a bit harsh with our boy but he mellowed a lot over the years, he hardly trusted anyone back then. I remember we walked into a pizza shop where we lived and a crook who had been In Pentridge was coming out and they both recognised each other. But hubby just said Gday and the crook looked relieved, said Gday Boss out of habit back and took off, it was funny to see and awkward.
Went there in the 70s with school to see a play, 12 angry men . Prisoner there looked just like Charles Bronson. Couple of days after the play there was a riot, prisoners using smuggled in weapons from the night of the play. It was A division.
Bendigo was the worst with the shit bucket in three outer cell walking down the stairs with shit falling over staircase then to the yards to wash the shit bucket
Ooh hubby worked there too before it closed, he didn’t like doing relieving duty in there. It was worse than Pentridge where he usually was. I remember going to pick him up after his shift, creepy place in the dark.
I've been couple times with my mum but I found it's not good they have wrecked it, it's ashame the when it was close they should of left everything where it was, and reopen it up has a Meusum
sorry to hear these thoughts. I presume the biggest bugbear is the shopping centre and all the apartments around it. It's tough to balance preserving the history with development and where money is involved, I guess development wins most times., thanks for watching
Hubby worked in H division as a prison officer and then to Castlemaine and Port Phillip when Pentridge closed, and said they were like holiday camps compared to Pentridge. Granted that Castlemaine (Loddon) is a lower category prison, still pretty cushy though. The women’s prison at Tarrengower in Maldon is even easier.
"H" Division was the high security unit where really tough prisoners were put. William O'Malley, who was the longest serving prisoner in Australia at one time, did 27 years locked up in "H" Division for shooting a policeman. He said they kept him in the pound for long periods and fed him bread and water.
What an absolute tragedy to do this to a piece of living history. West Australia got it right with preserving Fremantle.
some like it but I see where youre coming from - thanks for watching!
Absolutely spot on,, absolute disgrace too, Greedy grubs.... Our history down the toilet..
Im from Melbourne and I agree with you.
Very interesting. Beautiful entrance, walls and buildings. And a practical shopping center too!
Lol yes practical! Thanks for watching Lynda!

It affects everyone who goes through who works in the system thanks for sharing your experiences
The Old Melbourne Jail is worse. That's where Colin Campbell Ross - the only person executed and later pardoned, was executed.
History of both is certainly very dark. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
What a tragedy.... 😌
Thank you for your pleasant content my friend, I follow your posts carefully. Greetings and regards 🎩
Many thanks
Wow pretty expensive if the prices were dropped they’d get larger tour groups
Yes it's really expensive to be fair. Which is definitely robbing them of visitors sadly. Thanks for popping by!!

Thanks for another great story about the prison. I wonder if they ever held another play there!!! Thanks for your comment !!
