  • Motor City poet Philip Levine felt out of place in New York City, when he went to New York University to serve as their Distinguished Poet-in-Residence. Walking the streets helped him acclimate, and gave him poetry ideas. "The Poem of Chalk" sprang from one of those walks, and was later published in Levine's book, The Simple Truth.
Distinguished Poet-in-Residence at the NYU Creative Writing Program for more than 15 years, Levine won the Pulitzer Prize, two National Book Awards, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. In 2011, he was named the 18th United States Poet Laureate by the Library of Congress.
Chania Hudson reads an introduction to offer context and background on the poet and the poem.
