    It’s weird seeing a bookstore in a shopping centre (mall). They haven’t been around my town in almost 20 years. Hence, I no longer go to malls...

    • @outlawbookselleroriginal
      @outlawbookselleroriginal  14 дней назад +2

      Well, a second hand bookshop in this context is odd in the UK as well- it's just that this 'mall' is being demolished in around 3-4 years time and there are lots of empty units there, so Secon Page probably get a really good deal on the rent. This shopping centre opened in 1991 and has a large chainstore bookshop- Waterstones, the UK equivalent of B&N - resident from that time until now. It's the largest new books outlet in Bristol ever- and Bristol is Britain's fifth largest city (scenes from 'Treasue Island' take place there).

      I was pleased with this video apart from the fact that the very painful injury I'd just sustained prevented me from showing more book covers- I was in serious pain and still discomforted. Second Page is well worth a visit, but some of the books are priced at the upper end of what people would pay on ebay in a bidding situation, but I guess you can't blame them. This is why I suggested they bag their £15 up titles, as I wouldn't be paying through the nose for books that have been thumbed and worn by non-collectors. They are now bagging!

    There is a delightfully dystopic element to visiting a mall in the state of despair.
    Is it Ballardian?
    I wouldn't be able to say, but I would say there's usually a very clever luncheon spot in those places with either very good coffee ,or baked goods- sometimes both.

    Got that Wylie End of the Dream in Elmfield Press hardcover. I clearly remember buying it and a ton of others in WHsmith for pennies each IIRC in a January sale maybe 45 years ago. Funny how certain things stick hard in the memory and others disappear instantly. The Josh Kirby covers really sold them well so I scooped up one of each.
    I've heard you mention them before OB - Any chance of a segment about Elmfield?

      @outlawbookselleroriginal  14 дней назад +1

      Yeah, it's pretty good. I tend to regard charity shops as a different entity to a true secondhand bookshop- and you know how scarce they are now. Take a look at my dealer visits book hauls to Zardoz/allyouneedisbooks and Dorset Bob- these are warehouse based- for the real meat. I was the first booktuber to visit these guys, instigating this back in 2022. Jules Burt has also done some good vids with these dealers.

      Hi Rick. It was around 11am on a tuesday morning, so a quiet time of day- and also the first day back at school and work for many people in the UK, which was one of the reasons I visited at that time, as I knew shooting would be easier with no crowds around. It is probably the best secondhand bookshop within twenty-thirty miles of me with the exception of Zardoz/All You Need Is Books shop/office space.

      Be aware that Bob's warehouse is NOT open to the public. But if you are serious about buying, contact him first and he may admit you, but it's unlikely, for like me he works and tends only to admit established collectors and booktubers. The fact is that great secondhand bookshops are few and far between now and scattered about. Look at my and Jules Berts' bookshop visits video for an idea of what it's really like here in the UK. And remember, we are cherry picking.
