I love this my wife and I leave material for our squirrels in the fall and watch them gather it. Humans should always help the animals when they can and the animals appreciate it.
I’m going to our store today and getting some material that will keep them warm, cut the material that will be easy enough to carry up- and try to stack them on a long pole and place them on a thick sturdy branch that doesn’t move so that they won’t have too far to go to reach their destination.
I wasn't expecting to cry, but seeing such kindness towards these guys (and gals) is such a stark contrast to what I witness in my own neighborhood. Thank you for doing this.
I love the Douglas squirrels, aka 'chickarees'. I was fortunate to watch a mama raise 2 litters this summer. She would pull bark off of a nearby incense cedar, and tuck it into a ball like she was trying to do in this video. She would make many trips to her nest which was conveniently close. We were so lucky to have the perfect oak tree that had the perfect hole in the trunk for her family!!
I have a frequently visiting squirrel. Feed him on my deck railing. He's not even afraid of my cat anymore. She can't jump that high anymore. 1st thing tomorrow, he's getting some fresh bedding. Awesome tip! We used to throw our ponytail ribbons out for the birds. Us older gals remember those ribbons. The bright colored yarn.😂
I do the exact same thing. Put them in a basket and leave them out where the squirrels go. They disappear fast when it is getting colder here. They love the pillow case stuffing! Try it. It's their favorite stuff they use for the nests.
Beautiful little squirrel 🐿️❤❤❤❤❤tying to make it a home for winter and stay warm in it's home I love it soooo adorable and Sprical squirrel ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤I love watching it ❤❤❤❤❤❤I'll be your friend's ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Cotton isn’t warm when it’s wet though, sheep wool would be better- wool socks even wet will keep your feet warm. So I would think the squirrels would be better off with sweater remnants. But not acrylic, polyester based fabrics breakdown and are polluting. And as a knitter I put out wool yarn pieces for the birds in spring, as well as, wisps of sheep wool.
LMAO (title) Yeah I watched a little guy right in front of me only a few feet stuff his mouth with the car seat and move out on account of all the noise from the chainsaw LOL
Since squirrels use all four legs to travel, their “saddle bags” (so to speak) are their cheeks and mouth. They pack their cheeks with seeds/food or whatever they want to carry so they can haul it back to their nests, a cache site, or a safe place to eat. These squirrels (commonly known as “chickarees”) are trying to pack as much of these t-shirt scraps into their mouths as they can so that they can carry them back to their nests where they’ll use them a lot like we use sheets and blankets to make beds.
@@ellyw7201 These are just old t-shirt scraps. Primarily cotton. I cut them up into roughly (very roughly) 6” x 6” squares. There are a lot of foraging mammals and birds that will take and use thread and fabric for nest building. But don’t feel as though they “need” these materials. I put these out mainly just as a little gift and because I didn’t want to waste materials that others might use and appreciate. But they are definitely fully capable and independent with what the wilds offer them and don’t have any real need of my clothing scraps.
I have recently fallen in love with multiple squirrels at a rest stop near where I'm staying. I go feed them and spend time with them daily, I am a complete animal lover, defender and will do what is needed IF the means are available to me. Anyway, I live in CA, SF Peninsula which does not have çhange of seasons with no harsh conditions. This said, should I provide blankets anyway?? How can I get more info re; the material or anything necessary to know to help my squirrels best I can? Thank you
This is a lovely thought and motivation…thank you for your good will towards our wild friends and neighbors. That said, the squirrels don’t “need” blankets. Even the squirrels in this video, which is shot in a cold Rocky Mountain location in Montana, aren’t in any real need of my help. They are industrious and well-adapted to their environments. They are very capable foragers and are great at using whatever is available to them. If they find clothing scraps, they may choose to use them. But they won’t suffer without them. So I would keep doing what you’re doing: watching and appreciating them.
The fluffy tail, their communication, cheeks that expand to hold food and their penchant for trees. I call them timber tigers. They will still chew anything and everything. The company I work for fixes a lot of squirrel chewed cable and fiber every year. They run the lines and use it as a highway from one tree to the next and across the roads. Smart little buggers.
That guideline primarily applies to habituating wildlife to human food/food-sources…which is a no-no. But there’s no harm done putting t-shirt scraps out for squirrels.
These things make a heart that’s heavy with what the weight of the world is bringing onto people this warmed up my heart❤

Hmmm, maybe if I left material for them, they wouldn't keep chewing my hammock cords!!

Aww that's sweet. I leave colorful vegetable dyed wool yarn threads for the birds nests. Trees look colorful in the spring. 🌱🌼💐🌺🌷🪻🌳😊❤

I put out nuts for them... they know when I am in the yard and come running for the nuts... they appreciate it 😅

Making a nest or making the nest better, softer!😊❤
What kind of fabric do you put out? And what size?

What's the difference between a rat and a squirrel 🤔
Pretty privilege and puffy tails...

Rats need love too
Did They Go To 😂School -Or Just Know and How ..?……🌞
Put a big flower pot filled with soil out so they'd stop digging in my plants.

are we supposed to give non-humans human things? I thought that was a no no.

Squirrels do this on their own too, stealing clothes from the clothes line. That's where the other sock went.
@@joesiesjazzyjunk Ha! Yes they do. I’ve caught them in the act numerous times.
@@joesiesjazzyjunkalways the LEFT one 🤣🤣🤣
Tree rats. .22
What a cool guy. Does this comment make you feel like a badass? Because it just makes you look like a douche.
That's what I call them too..tree rats but I adore them. They are so cute 😍😍😍
