When Binker Golding and Moses Boyd’s debut album Dem Ones was released in Summer of 2015 it kickstarted a sensational year for the young saxophone and drums duo, who won a string of awards including 2015 MOBO Awards: Best Jazz Act, Jazz FM Awards 2016: UK Jazz Act of the Year and Breakthrough Act of the Year and the 2106 Parliamentary Jazz Awards: Jazz Newcomer of the Year.
Their new record Journey to the Mountain of Forever is a story album on two discs: the first features the duo on their own while for the second they are joined by saxophonist Evan Parker, trumpeter Byron Wallen, harpist Tori Handsley tabla player Sarathy Korwar and drummer Yussef Dayes. The sessions took place on 21-22 July 2016, and were recorded completely live from Mark Ronson’s Zelig studio direct to a 1960’s Studer C37 1/4” tape machine at Gearbox’s studio - no edits, drop-ins or mixing down.
So, travel with us from the “realm of the now” to “the realm of the infinite” meeting along the way Shamans, the great Besbunu, the Ultra Blacks, various other tribes, monsters and characters whilst immersing yourself in their strange rituals, potions, music and a world which has no end.
But, beware of the Jahvmonishi plant!

I have transcribed the first 5mins ! Before the drum solo and the sax improv. It's based on the studio version, so you'll have to get all those little variations he does here by ear. And it's also my first transcription, and I'm a complete beginner when it comes to writing music, so there's a few mistakes in the rhythm. Otherwise I'm pretty sure all the notes are correct. Give me your email address if interested ;) Cheers

I just got a comment via e-mail scolding me for my views! I am not the jazz police far from it and if you read my comments properly you you will see that I applaude the new generation of jazz musicians and am very happy there is a young audience for them!

It really is great that the present younger generation are diggin' this but I often wonder if they are aware where this music came from especially the drum and saxophone duet thing? Sonny Rollins/Max Roach, Archie Shepp/Max Roach, John Coltrane/Rashied Ali, Dewey Redman/Ed Blackwell, Charles Lloyd/Billy Higgins, David Murray/Milford Graves, Frank Lowe/ Rashied Ali, Fred Anderson/Hamid Drake and many many more sax and drum duo's right up to this present day. I do hope that the enthusiasm shown here by this audience in not just a fashion thing to be forgotten when the next new trend comes along. Long may the true music live on!

Holy shit they are more than aware, it’s a love letter to all those duos you listed above! Both of them are incredibly dedicated to the tradition of the old masters, at least that’s what I got from talking to Binker anyhow.

The performance is really nice, but you're completely right about the audience. Over here in Berlin, this phase happened too and almost nobody who was suddenly into Jazz listened to much beyond Kamasi Washington. It's such a pity.

I think you have totally misunderstood my message. If you read it again you will find that I applaud these young musicians for being extremely talented and for bringing improvised music to the next generation. I do feel however there is a huge media hype based on fashion that can devalue the depth and legacy that has made this great music we have today. You cannot learn this stuff in school or college, it's a life experience that brings with it a vocabulary of emotions and personal stories that youngsters have yet to experience, personal and original stories is what this music is all about. I have been playing improvised music for over 50 years so I think I know what I'm talking about. I am not a cynic at all but someone who's has those personal stories to tell through music. Many blessings and happy musical discoveries!
