    Hi Sophie :) Im a law student from HK and I just got an exchange offer to the Uni of Liverpool for the second semester next year. Your videos are really nice and I appreciate them a lot! It'd be great if u can tell me more about exchange life here, for example studying environment and social lives!

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад

      Hello Lui, thank you for your question :)
      Coming here for a semester from HK sounds like it will be an amazing experience for you! I hope I can help you out in some way with your decision.
      In terms of the studying environment, I think you have lectures in rooms that replicate a court. You also have seminars where you are taught in a small group and can debate, and we have a Liverpool Law Clinic where other students can come to you with a legal case (in the presence of someone legally qualified) and you will write them a letter of legal advice. Our two on-campus libraries are open 24/7 during term time for you to study in, and the lecturers all have office hours, which are selected weekly times (e.g. Tuesday 3pm-5pm) where you can drop into their office with any questions and they can offer extra help. You are always really encouraged to ask for help if you ever need it.
      Regarding the social lives... this is honestly the best place for that! There are absolutely loads of societies that you can get involved with (including a Legal Society, so that would be a really easy place to get to know people on your course), or you could take up a new hobby for the semester, or meet people who love the same thing that you do. The guild (student union) always have events on in their building which is on campus, like gigs or bingo nights. And with the uni being in the city centre, you're a short walk from all the tourist attractions that the city of Liverpool has to offer. Plus, there are lots of things to do here for free (like art galleries, museums and the Albert Dock) and for those that do cost, we are quite cheap. For example, nights out here are cheap compared to other parts of the country.
      If you have any more questions, just let me know! :)

    Hi Sophie, thanks for the lovely videos, it helped me a lot as my son has applied for Medical school in Liverpool. Wanted to check with you, is it better living at Crown Place or Dover Court? Which one would offer me more value in terms of space, closeness to the Med University. Btw, are there any supermarkets, eateries around Crown Place. How safe is the area. Hope you could help. Thanks

    Very cool and nice video! I have some questions about the residence hall and hope you can answer them:
    1. What is the difference between the room in Melville Grove and Crown Place? Which one has a larger space?
    2.Which en-suite do you recommend? Are their sizes vary a lot?
    Thanks.

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад

      Hi Frank, thank you!
      1. Melville Grove is very different to the other accommodations as they are houses rather than halls. They are three-story houses and I believe 8 believe live in each one. They are shared bathrooms rather than en-suite. I think the bedrooms in Melville are pretty much the same size as the single bedrooms in Crown.
      2. All the en-suites in Crown Place are the same size, whether you get a single bedroom or studio flat.

    Hi this video was really useful thank you! Im thinking of coming to liverpool uni from london as i want to study orthoptics but i am wondering if there are any accommodations close to the orthoptics area? Also are there any accomodation with private kitchens and bathrooms? Thank you x

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад

      Hello, I'm glad the video was useful for you!
      The campus is very compact (about a fifteen minute walk from one end to the other) so all on-campus accommodations are near orthoptics. But the very closest is probably Dover Court, closely followed by Crown Place.
      Do you mean a private kitchen or bathroom to yourself, not sharing with anyone? Yes all accommodations have a number of studio flats. That is where you have your own bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. The bedrooms are bigger too, and usually have a double bed, whereas shared flats tend to have a 3/4 or single bed. But of course, they're more expensive.
      Happy to help again if you have anymore questions!x

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад

      Hello, thank you! It's about a one minute walk from mathematical sciences and about five minutes from computer sciences. But your lectures can be anywhere on campus, they're not necessarily all in the building for your course. But Crown Place is more or less in the centre of campus and the campus itself is very compact so you will never have to walk far.

    Hey! I've recently confirmed Liverpool as my firm choice, I'm so nervous as I've applied for accommodation for Melville Grove and there's been really mixed reviews, some saying it's really hard to make friends etc as it's not as social as the other accommodation! Crown place was my third choice, simply because of the price as I wanted the cheapest as hate borrowing loads from Mum and Dad! However I got put off from Carnatic as I'm wanting to go out 2/3 times a week and I got the impression Carnatic is more of an everyday thing! :)
    Also, quite a random question but does a shared bathroom really bother some people who have one? Again because of really mixed reviews.
    Thank you for your videos on the uni, I've been watching them religiously ever since I made it my firm choice! xx

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад

      Hello Jess!
      Aw please don't worry about reading bad reviews! 99% of people don't write reviews about their halls (not a quoted fact, I'm just saying that as a figure of speech), so the ones that do are only really doing it because they have a reason to, and that would be because they have a complaint. So it may look like there's lots of people with complaints but in reality they are a very very small percentage of people living there, and the rest will be very happy with it! But if you're happy with your accommodation, you don't really have a reason to log on and write about it, if that makes sense, so you don't really hear of the really happy experiences. I remember reading lots of negative reviews about Crown Place's internet and I was worried, but now that I'm here it's the best internet connection I've ever had! I also read lots of comments about it being hard to make friends in Crown. But...
      Please don't worry about making friends, that is NOT hard to do at the uni! Which particular accommodation you end up in won't make it any easier or harder. All of the halls are perfect places to meet people and make friends. When you go to uni, you meet thousands of new people every day. If someone struggles to make friends at uni (which there always are a select few, I'm not denying that) it's generally because of the person themselves, not because of their halls. I mean that in the nicest possible way. There's no way that your halls would be enough to make it hard to make friends. Even if you didn't meet anyone in your halls that you like (which I doubt anyway) think about how much you will go out, the intro talks, lectures, events, societies, nights out... you'll meet friends in all of those!
      Again with reviews about the bathroom.. I was so bothered about having an ensuite before coming to uni, it was so important to me, but now that I'm here it's just absolutely not a thing on my mind at all. Next year I'll have a shared bathroom and I know that it won't be an issue. You really don't care about things like that at uni. I think it's a good thing to get used to in the first year anyway as it's almost impossible to find somewhere with an ensuite in your second year. I'm sure there are people who have had bad experiences, for example if there's someone who makes the bathroom really dirty and never cleans it up, that may be annoying, but that's the same with sharing a kitchen, but no one worries about that. It's nice to share! It's so different to living with your parents, you will really enjoy it :) Please don't worry! Just get excited for what's to come!!!
      Aww that's sooo nice to read that you watch my vlogs religiously!! Thank you so much! I make these for people like you. if there's anything else I can help with, let me know!xx

      Hello Morgan, they have exactly the same floor space and storage, but the 3/4 bedrooms are proportionately bigger, so the extra room is only to accommodate the bigger bed, so it's not actually any bigger if that makes sense?

    Hiya! I'm about to be the biggest pain n the world and ask you loads of pointless questions about Crown Place that I really hope you can answer! I've chosen Liverpool as my firm choice but I'm getting a little bit stressed about which halls to apply for. So far I think Crown is looking like my first choice but id like some help to know (as well as what will be in the room), what kinds of things in need to bring that I hadn't thought about! How much space do you typically get under the bed? Enough to put a decent sized storage box under for example?How many sockets are there or is it worth just bringing an extension lead/adaptor?(This is a silly question) You mentioned a few different colours of the walls, how many different colours are they and what are they?Do I need to bring my own iron or is there one available to students in the laundrette?Is the hot water something that's there all of the time? Or it is something you need to switch on yourself before showering?How many people share your kitchen? And is that number typical of flats in Crown Place?Some of the unis I've visited have a cleaner that comes in once a week - is this something that you have at Crown Place? Particularly in the kitchen or is it all down to the students? If so, do you think its worth bringing a little hand held vacuum or something? Or is that just being silly?Are you allowed fairy lights and electricals like that for decoration?Is there a bin provided (in the en suite in particular) or do I need to bring one with me?Is there any storage for things like towels, loo rolls and normal bathroom supplies? I didn't see a cupboard in the video and just wondered if it was out of shot. Do you get a mirror provided in the room? Or just in the bathroom and you need to bring your own?How much cupboard, fridge and freezer space do you get in the kitchen? Is it enough or is it a bit of a struggle?Thank you so much in advance! I know there're a lot of questions and I really appreciate your time :)

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад +6

      Hello! No you're not a pain at all, these are exactly the questions I had before coming here and I would have appreciated someone answering them so much, so I'm so happy that I can help!
      First of all, don't be stressed about choosing halls, I speak a bit about it at the end of my 'Student village vs on-campus halls'. It's really not something you should get yourself worked up about, be excited about it!! Here's the answer to your questions...
      -You get loads of space under the bed. I have boxes under there (which I'd really recommend for storage) which are just under 25cm high, and there's still a bit of space above them. I keep my suitcases under there too, plenty of room.
      -I brought an extension lead and have never used it. There's loads of sockets. You get two next to the bed, so that's great for a bedside lamp and phone charger. And then along the work desk you get six. So eight in the whole room.
      -I think there are five potential colours for the 'feature' walls, the deep red which I have, turquoise, navy blue, orange and lime green. I'm not aware of any more. It's not worth getting yourself worked up about colour coding to it. It's only on one wall, and you're only here for one year. You won't have walls that colour when you move into a student house next year, so instead of buying a bright green bedding to match one wall, you're better off buying bedding that you love so then it'll look just as nice next year when you move out.
      -You don't need to bring your own iron, there is an iron and an ironing board kept in the kitchen.
      -Yes hot water is here and unlimited all the time, you don't need to switch anything on. The facilities in Crown are so new so you don't need to worry about any of that.
      -There are five people in my flat (including myself) so five sharing one kitchen, but that's quite rare. Generally there are 6-8 people in each flat. But your kitchen size is in relation to how many people share your flat. People living in an 8 bedroom flat have a much bigger kitchen than me with an extra oven and extra fridge.
      -Yep we have cleaners, they are amazing! They come three times a week, and someone comes to empty your bins three times a week too!! I haven't had to take my bins out at all. The cleaners only do the kitchen though, so you clean your own bedroom, but you can empty your bedroom bin into the kitchen one so you never need to take that out. You also get a sanitary bin in your ensuite and someone comes to empty that once a month.
      -I brought a handheld vacuum for my bedroom but have never used it. There's a vacuum in the kitchen and I just bring that into my bedroom when I need it.
      -You are allowed fairy lights but only battery powered ones, you can't have plug in ones.
      -There is a bin in the bedroom, and a sanitary bin in the ensuite (like you get in public toilets). I brought my own little bin as an extra for the ensuite.
      -There is a heated towel rack in the bathroom for your shower towels and then a hook next to the sink for your hand towel.
      -There are no cupboards in the bathroom, but the shelves in the wardrobe are great for spare folded towels and a good place for extra loo roll is under the bed. You do have a shelf space above the toilet though where you can keep loo roll and products and it's big. You'll be able to fit any bathroom things on there. You also get a glass shelf above the sink.
      -No you don't get a mirror in the bedroom, I'd recommend buying one in advance! You get a full length mirror inside the wardrobe and a big mirror in the bathroom, but no mirror on the desk to do your make up. B&M is a great place to look for mirrors. They do them for about £10 and are really nice (that's where mine is from in the video). As a guide, mine is 60cm by 40cm and is the perfect size.
      -You get two allocated cupboards each in the kitchen, it's a lot so you'll be fine! They have your room number on, so there's no pressure to arrive early for the best cupboard, you're given them anyway! You also get a drawer each. And then between the flat we have four spare cupboards which don't belong to anyone, so we share those as communal cupboards for all our pots and pans. Sometimes the fridge is a bit of a squeeze, but only because we have one between the five of us. Flats with 6 people have 2 fridges, so if we had one extra person we'd have a whole extra fridge space and then there'd be more than enough.
      Don't worry, having lots of questions is completely normal, everyone is the same. I just love that I'm able to help! Don't hesitate if you want to ask anything else, you remind me of me this time last year, I would have done anything for this! :) xx

      Thank you so much for this! you have no idea how much help you're being!! If its okay, I have a couple more questions?
      I know it sounds silly, but is there a (decent) microwave in the kitchen? Are there locks on the cupboards in the kitchen and if so, is it with a key or a code or swiping your card that you open them?Is the hanger on the back of your door something that is provided or something which you bought yourself? I assume you cant put holes in the door and walls so how is it actually staying up there?! hahaWith regards to heating, particularly in winter obviously, is it something that you can turn on and off for yourself or does it come on automatically? And is it individual for each room (so you don't all have to have the heating on, one person is able to have it on just in their room but in no one else's)?How much is the laundrette to use and is it very far away?Do you have a laundry basket or something in your room? I mean, is there space for one?
      You're an absolute gem thank you so much for helping me!!! :)

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад

      Aww you're welcome!! Yes of course I don't mind answering more!
      -Yes there's a really good microwave in the kitchen.
      -There are locks on the cupboards in the kitchen, but you need to bring your own padlocks for them. So bring two if you want them. No one in my kitchen uses their locks but maybe for pre drinks when you've got other people in the flat you might want to use them then. Other than that they're really not necessary.
      -I brought the coat hooks on the back of my door myself, they aren't provided.
      -No you can't put holes in the door or walls, they are pretty strict with that here! My coat hooks are the ones that hook over the door. Here's a link to a picture of one so that you know what I mean... www.organizeit.com/images/539704interd.jpg
      -I have never actually touched the heating myself so I'm not too sure how much control you can have over it, but there is a radiator in each person's room with a dial so you can adjust it if you want and it wouldn't affect anyone else's. But there has never been a problem with being too cold in the Winter, the heating is automatic and pretty good.
      -The laundrette is £1.50 per wash I think. I'll get back to you on that if I'm wrong. The laundry room is in Crown Place reception. And there isn't a laundry basket provided in your room but there's plenty of space to put one under the work desk, or there's lots of space between the end of your bed and the wall.
      You're welcome again!!!xx

      Yes my room is a 'Deluxe 3/4 bed'. Not all the rooms look the same, you can also get a single bed and that room is slightly smaller. Other than the size, they are the same (in layout). Or, you can get a 'Deluxe studio room' or a 'large studio deluxe suite', both of which are way bigger than my room! Studios also have a kitchen in the bedroom so they are very different to what mine looks like.
      The price varies depending on which room you choose, mine is £5460 for the year. Hope this helps :)

    What do you think is the best value for money if wanting to live in an ensuite? Would it be worthwhile to go and rent from a private sector building or campus building? If campus what halls?

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад

      I think the cheapest University of Liverpool accommodation with an ensuite is a single bedroom at Crown Place. There are cheaper private accommodations if you look around but you have to consider that if you go there, you probably won't be living with people who are also students at the same uni, or even your own age. I would recommend in your first year sticking to an accommodation that belongs to the uni. Your halls are where you'll meet most of your friends and do most of your socialising so it's worth the extra cost to know that you're living with people in the same boat as you.
      I hope this helps :)

    Can i know which accommodation is the closest to the badminton hall?

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад

      Tudor Close is the closest, it's right across the road. Then Crown Place is probably a one or two minute walk away.
      Melville Grove and Vine Court are about a five minute walk so there's not much in it between them. The campus is compact so any on-campus accommodation will be a few minutes away, but those four are the closest :)

    Hey Girl 💕
    I am actually thinking of joining Liverpool Uni in Jan for MSc in Marketing. I actually checked out your vlogs in youtube and genuinely liked your reviews ❤.
    Can you please help me deciding if the offer is worth it? Like how's the management department of Liverpool and are there a lot of international students?

      ***** ok I know this may sound weird, but if you don't mind answering, are you vaguely aware of the ethnic demographics of the university Lol I'm Asian so I was just wondering if there are a lot of muslims around like me (generally around the whole university) I was just wondering for things like prayer rooms and stuff just incase I move out? Sorry I know this is long winded I was just curious to know :)

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад +5

      Aww of course I don't mind answering! One of the girls living in my flat is muslim so I know a lot about the demographics here at the uni.
      This is definitely a good uni for your culture. There is a big Islamic Society, you will make so many friends there! You can sign up as soon as you start here and they will welcome you in. They often meet up for really nice events and socials, some religious and some just for fun! They also do charity work together.
      Sometimes my flatmate brings some of her friends back to the flat from the society and they are a big group of really lovely people!
      Also, there is a huge space underground of one of the libraries on campus with a prayer room and the room for Wudhu (sorry if I haven't written that correctly). It is open 24/7 for you to pray and also there are advertised specific times of day to pray so that you can come and do it as a group and I believe they get very busy.
      I really like your question, I am going to do a video on this topic to provide more detail :)

    • @TheGeographyWatch
      @TheGeographyWatch 5 лет назад

      There are some that are non high-rise, the main ones are Philharmonic Court and Melville Grove. However, there aren’t any 2 bedroom flats. Flats will accommodate 4-7 people, depending on where you live.

  • @ujuonyishi

    I really enjoyed the video! And I am just wondering how many people share a kitchen and common area in the halls?
    It will be really nice if you could show us a tour of the kitchen and common area. Thanks!

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад

      Hello:)
      Ah that's a great idea! I will make that my next video to do a tour of the kitchen and common area!
      I believe the smallest flat size sharing a kitchen is 6 people, and the biggest is 10 people. The more people you have, the bigger the kitchen is.
      There is one main common room which is in the reception of Crown, and that is shared by everyone living here, and there are also two courtyards. I will show all of these areas in my next tour :)

    Hey! I'm highly considering Liverpool as my firm choice, and I'm currently looking into all the different accomodations. I am planning to be a music major, having access to a fitness center is important to me, and I like to be around people and involved in a lot of social events. Do you have any reccomendations or just any tips on scouting out which accomodation is best?

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад +2

      Hey Natalie!
      It really sounds like you are going to thrive at university!
      In terms of general tips for the best accommodation for you in any uni, if you're very social and like to be around people all the time then maybe consider finding a catered accommodation, as the canteen is very social. Also quite a lot of halls have their own gym, so that'll tick your box of a fitness centre. In regards to the social events, every halls accommodation is probably the most social situation you'll ever find yourself in in your whole life! The halls you live in will organise events in the halls, the Students' Union will organise events on campus, and then if you're off campus I believe they have their own events in the student village. So wherever you go, you'll never be far from student events!
      I hope that helps! I guess I'm more just trying to tell you that from what you've listed, you can't go wrong anywhere. You sound like a character that will absolutely love student life in halls!!

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  4 года назад

      Hello! I don't think I ever did get round to it haha! But it wouldn't have been a problem though, the rooms are quite sound proof. You can only hear noises from bedrooms if you're stood outside it in the corridor. Plus, people play music from speakers a lot louder than I can play my flute!

    Are girls and boys stay in the same flat or are they buildings are different from each other

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  4 года назад +2

      Girls and boys are mixed within buildings, but some flats only have girls or only have boys in. Most flats are mixed with both though.
      Before being allocated your room/flat, you fill in a questionnaire about you and they'll ask you whether you want to be with all girls/boys/mixed.

    What grades do you need to get into the university of Liverpool?❤

    • @SophieRyderVlogs
      @SophieRyderVlogs  7 лет назад

      It depends which subject, but to give you a basic idea I'll list the more common subjects to see if this is the level you're looking for... I believe the typical offers are as follows:
      For the School of the Arts subjects (including English, Music, Philosophy, Media and Architecture) and Performing Arts subjects you need A level grades ABB.
      For the Maths and Sciences subjects you need A level grades AAB.
      For Medicine and Veterinary you need A level grades AAA.
      Good luck!! :-)
