well know if you actually watch the video and pay attention he states that some of them are quite a bit older like 2013 but because of a firmware update they can be added to a mesh a I essentially turning the router into a repeater as well..... And I guess you can run frequencies that support more broadband so it would actually be faster as well because you're getting all of your throughput it's not choking out or having a frequency conflict. so I guess you could say it's not technically faster but because it seemed less interruptions and less choking out it will run faster and better.
The difference is that it is a mesh network. Rather than acting like an extender/booster a mesh network acts as one unit (hence the mesh name). This means you aren't killing your WiFi speeds through interference but are still expanding the network. This is why the Orbi and Google mesh were both widely popular. (Google still is.)
Pretty sure that's a post-recording for whatever reason (even though they could've done a much better job of syncing that to the live footage), as it really sounds like there's a mic switch at the end there.
@Pankaj Doharey Oh thank god for that incredibly in-depth discussion addition! It's not like you're commenting something utterly useless on a comment from 3 months ago while not even bothering to press the "read more" button under his comment. Great work!
I have an extremely good router. I also have a great AP. A single router simply cannot properly send 2.4GHz and 5GHz (especially the latter) throughout all three stories, plus the outdoor locations that were shown. The manufacturers are limited as to how much power they can pump through their radios, which combined with the frequencies in use and building materials / furniture, will limit how far the signals can propagate. That you think otherwise shows your complete lack of understanding of how wireless hardware works.
Michael Rechtien not true. I have a three story house built with breeze blocks and brick (including interior support walls), can stream 4K on top floor, at bottom of garden in hot tub (40 yards) all thanks to a good router. My neighbours even use my WiFi when on their top floor because mine gives them better reception than there's does.
More like: "Here are a bunch of routers and a sack of money. Find any excuse to show off our AiMesh feature." So he installs them for a friend at the friend's inlaws. There was no inconvenience, you can be sure they paid him. A guy with millions of subscribers doesn't care about a few free routers, he probably gets them sent all the time. He has plenty.
But can't you get better "not faster" wifi with any added routers anyways? Isn't the the title of the video kind of suggesting something completely different?
You easily could, however in some cases it may not, and this was an example of that may not, and how if you install a big fancy router and it isn't enough if it happens to be a asus router you can just get another one to fix deadzones.

A speedtest and real-life usage scenario can vary WILDLY. My mother's home internet connection should get 30 Mbps down, but while I can stream a 4k50 video at 2x speed from RUclips just fine, some websites/servers can't sustain more than 50 KBps unless I run something like 20 simultaneous downloads (I actually did this just to test), and probably run it through a VPN, in which case they can reach a combined bandwidth greater than or equal to the RUclips stream. Don't do AT&T kids. It's bad for you(r gaming experience).

Thanks for noticing, not sure what happened since it's not in the edit? -AP Edit: there's a bunch of odd sound issues sprinkled throughout the vid actually. Not sure what's going on. It's been months since I've had an issue with an upload or a transcode.
It's also out of sync at 9:18 and there are at least 2 other times it repeats a few frames. Maybe someone used ripple edits instead of rolls by mistake or a multicam clip has a channel out of sync. I doubt this is a render issue unless it got linked to a modified version of the same clip with different timecode.
My Internet used to be that bad that even the ISP service told me to switch to a better ISP which was ridiculous as I was achieving a speed of 0.283mb/s as they checked. Plus it was that bad that even the Ookla speed checker refused to connect and test my speeds. The Internet loaded so slow that even 144p was unplayable by that point. Now I'm at 70-105mbps on a Virgin Media 108mbps plan here in the UK which is amazing. Can play full 1080p60 and even 4K60 on my phone, 2 monitors and even two TV's. Great job VM!
My 2x UniFi Lite setup works great, the roaming is way more aggressive than i would have thought (okay, it takes a second or 2 to actually switch between AP's, but it is smooth) Only cost me 140 EUR
Why are they blurring out the LG logo on the laptop. Was it in Asus contract to blur anything that is not Asus related or an Asus product? I don't know which editor but they're not all blurred out.
It’s most likely because they don’t have a current sponsorship with LG and as they are a big tech channel they can’t show LG products unless there sponsored by then
meanwhile in 2018 average Philippine household... stream HD movie on TV, the entire family watches because their bandwidth is devoured... FAMILY TIME!!!!
meanwhile in australia on ADSL... everyone watches in 240p because we are 3KM from the exchange and can barely get better than dialup, during all this im out in my caravan watching in 1080p using my phones unlimited 3G data
well the ADSL at the house sucks ass even at 4AM with nobody else using it i cant get more than about 400kb/sec out of it and during early evening its practically useless for anything other than browsing text based internet pages like wikipedia also optus has already tried disconnecting me based on the fair use policy due to me downloading 200GB in less than a month over a 3G data connection i sent them an email with the rules against false advertising and the following dictionary definition unlimited adjective: 1. not limited or restricted in terms of number, quantity, or extent. example: unlimited data means i can use as much data as i want without consequence they have not tried disconnecting me again for almost 2 months so far
thats because internet companies advertise in bits per second (even though we download data in bytes per second) they do this because the number is 8 times bigger and it sounds better in advertising its stupid as fuck and i think they should not be allowed to do it imagine buying a hard drive that stored 8 terabits then find out its only equal to 1 terabyte, i bet you would be pissed off
Make sure the channels are at least 5 apart. Put the old router in AP mode. Connect them with an Ethernet cableand or power line adapters, LAN - LAN port. Setup the security. Enjoy. FYI. Home routers suck ass at roaming. So don't bother having the same SSID.
802.11k, 802.11r and 802.11v are used to facilitate roaming fast and seamlessly. When APs are linked and support these, you avoid dropping calls/connections, or having to disconnect and reconnect manually to use the faster AP (despite having the same SSID). They allow the client to get signal information about it's transmit strength to the AP, among other things. Ideally roaming occurs in 50-150ms. Providing an optimized list of APs to roam to, aka Neighbor Reports (802.11k) Providing information about the traffic load on other APs (802.11v) Speeding up the roaming process by providing fast authentication (802.11r) www.smallnetbuilder.com/basics/wireless-basics/33180-how-to-fix-wi-fi-roaming support.apple.com/en-us/HT202628 revolutionwifi.blogspot.com/2011/12/wi-fi-roaming-analysis-part-1.html According to the SmallNetBuilder article ASUS AiMesh uses a proprietary system to do roaming, with no support mentioned for 802.11k/v/r. The article says some older clients may refuse to connect if 802.11r is enabled, so maybe this is for a reason. Forum reports on SmallNetBuilder say the ASUS roaming works pretty well, with minimal hiccups when auto switching APs while on a video call. You can still use wires with ASUS AiMesh to get full speed, while getting the benefits of smoother roaming. For wireless AiMesh, if you use the AC-5300 you get a 4x4 5 Ghz backhaul band/radio, in addition to separate 4x4 2.4 Ghz and 4x4 5 Ghz client radios. 4x4 5 Ghz is pretty darn close to wired if you just down going a floor, but it is costly for what it is, and you need 2. If you can wire one AP to the router, but the second one is out of reach, getting 2 AC-5300s as AiMesh extenders/slaves should net better performance than any off the shelf mesh networking system. All the mesh/wifi system kits I've seen have only 2x2 2.4 Ghz and 2x2 5 Ghz for servicing clients. Mesh systems that have a separate 4x4 or 2x2 5 Ghz for backhaul can't use that band for clients in wired mode as far as I've seen. Reports on the the SmallNetBuilder forums show that clients can connect on the second 5 Ghz band while it is being used for backhaul, and that even 2.4 Ghz can be used for backhaul when the signal is poor. The processor is slow on the older AC-5300 so you'll want to get an RT-86U as the router/master, it can route close to a gigabit with QoS and gaming enhancement enabled, and takes over processing duties for the AiMesh slaves. For about $750 for all 3 routers you'll get 4x4 5 Ghz everywhere, 3x3 2.4 Ghz near the RT-86U master, and 4x4 2.4 Ghz near the 2 RT-AC5300s slaves. If you wire the second RT-AC5300 you will get 8x8 5 Ghz near both RT-AC5300s, which is only really useful if you have a LOT of clients connected at once.
I know it's not always feasible, but running an Ethernet cable between your AI Mesh routers makes that system work even better. I have two AC68U routers mounted on the ceiling at either end of our house because there is a giant brick hearth between my housemates and I that nothing I tried could permeate at 5.4GHZ. I love it. Basically you don't have to worry about how many devices are connected in total, only to each respective router.
I just IAMeshed three RT-AC66U B1 Routers, Refurbs, $60 each. Works great. Might add a 4th if needed for outside later. The pro's is that you can roam and not think about changing SSID's or anything else. The con is that it is all on same channels but so far I have not seen a negative effect from that. It is definitely a "I do not want have to think about it again" solution as opposed to Repeaters and AP's that need a little love along the way.
That is what I would have suggested. We have a Unifi AC PRO as a main AP and a Unifi N AP connected wirelessly for remote CCTV. It would work better with a MIMO AP but the extra range the N would give is zero.
Andreas the management system like any industrial product will take some learning. Now I can create sites and setup the APs in a site in a few minutes.
Sebastián Barraza Oh, honey... Apparently my standards of "old electronics" are too... Wrong... I still consider a notebook from '04 relatively new tech. My Samsung Galaxy S3 is still relatively new to me!! Now don't get me wrong; I'm a nineteen year old programming major. I know my stuff. But unless it requires a floppy disk *and* is incompatible with 64-bit software, it's still relevant and decent tech.
I would have liked to seen a test with just the one asus router to see how much improvement the AI mesh actually had over just a high end router. I would imagine the signal would be a ton better than the "gateway" garbage anyway. I dont want to assume the worst, but it does have the feel of making the AI mesh look like it is doing way more than it is, just because they are a sponsor.
Chaim Goldbaum however powerlines often don’t work well with multi-story homes. For example. My powerline is the office near the front of the house, but the power lines on other sides get around 1/10 of the speed. But at least it’s better than WiFi
I had powerline, worked awesome when I got it but it went to shite after a while, I'm guessing the neighbors also got it and the interference killed it and I put 16 CAT 6 runs in instead with 2 APs. They had ethernet runs around the house too so just put APs on those.
Last time I tried an Asus router the 2.4 GHz range dropped at 5 meters just behind the first door, while my old TP-LINK worked 18 meters away at the end of the corridor. Direct sight: my iPhone 4s worked beyond 85 meters. Four story house without a repeater: no problem. 1043ND has a great range.
My AC1900 was a hot mess of random reboots that even the open source community couldn't fix. It left a bad tase in my mouth about their wireless products (at least of the era).
Guys you have the best channel on youtube ever, this is the first time i would bother to write a comment for a channel (true story :D), well done guys all the love and support
My wifi is so bad that I have to watch a video in 144p on a 1080p screen. And I have to wait for it to buffer. My latency is about 800 m/s on a good day.
Get a router with high gain antennas or if your router has detachable antennas you can just replace them, they make a huge difference, I can get a solid 20-30mbps with maybe 40ms ping from about 70 or so meters away. (Well unless you're on satellite internet in which case you're kinda SoL)
vgamesx1 Yep sounds even an old Linksys WRT54G with extended Antennas, DDWRT firmware, with the WiFi gain pumped to max, and a small desk fan for cooling would help here, but like you said if they are on a Sat. connection they might be SOL!
The Computer Dawgs What about an unlimited cell connection from someone like Cricket with one of the samsung phones can be docked, and turned into a sudo Android desktop PC? Sure it would only be 3mbps down/up on the unlimited 2 plan, but still better than dialup, and what I use on my phone with it being so cheap on a 4 line family plan at $25 a phone.
smoked_out But is it even necesary? Im sure just setting the same broadcast id does the trick in most devices. At least thats how its setup in the subway, just a bunch of repeaters with the same id and password. Id rather not have the same mac address, that what you can setup different subnetworks and route the packed to your liking. I have something like that here. I have the isp's modem/wifi router and my own wifi router bridged via cable, and have it so thst theres the plebs wifi and then my own subnetwork where i can access the plebs network but the plebs cant access mine and give me internet stds :D
Laharl Krichevskoy yeah without an actual firmware update there can't be much going on with the old routers other than configuring them as repeaters. Which you can do yourself or go with faster access point mode.
I love love your videos! You get an upvote from me and I am now subscribing. You explain things well enough that even a lay person with very basic computer and networking knowledge can understand and follow along.
He specifically says that it's not the only system like this available, not even the only one ASUS has. He's just using it as an example due to REASONS.
How to improve the network setup with an old router?
Step one, buy a bunch of brand new routers. 10/10.
yep, no sense at all
Dude, they are only 682 euro’s combined
One of those routers is over 5 years old.
Unifi AP AC Lites will do much better and cheaper.

I am sure that just switching to the six legged crab absolute monster of a router was enough to fix all the issues, no "ai mesh" required.
In as big a house as that was? Absolutely not.
If you think that house is too big for that monster, you have probably never had a good router.

How to get faster wifi with old routers? Spend hundreds of dollars and install 3 new devices, cool.
You could have any of the routers supported and just use multiples of it, but they used the nice new ones because they had them and why not

Edit: there's a bunch of odd sound issues sprinkled throughout the vid actually. Not sure what's going on. It's been months since I've had an issue with an upload or a transcode.
Harsh Temani More like a wrong edditing cut... Or rendering error
you also forgot to censor the LG logo right before :P
It's also out of sync at 9:18 and there are at least 2 other times it repeats a few frames. Maybe someone used ripple edits instead of rolls by mistake or a multicam clip has a channel out of sync. I doubt this is a render issue unless it got linked to a modified version of the same clip with different timecode.
Linus Tech Tips pfffft it's no big deal
Still don't have firmware upgrade for my RT-N53... its from 2014, but I bought it in 2015...
Try a 3rd party firmware: wikidevi.com/wiki/ASUS_RT-N53
Stephen X don't.... Hacked firmware sending your data to China
@Richard Dower Does having Huawei's router change anything?
My Internet used to be that bad that even the ISP service told me to switch to a better ISP which was ridiculous as I was achieving a speed of 0.283mb/s as they checked. Plus it was that bad that even the Ookla speed checker refused to connect and test my speeds. The Internet loaded so slow that even 144p was unplayable by that point. Now I'm at 70-105mbps on a Virgin Media 108mbps plan here in the UK which is amazing. Can play full 1080p60 and even 4K60 on my phone, 2 monitors and even two TV's. Great job VM!
My 2x UniFi Lite setup works great, the roaming is way more aggressive than i would have thought (okay, it takes a second or 2 to actually switch between AP's, but it is smooth)
Only cost me 140 EUR
Sometimes I watch Linus’ lips and more recently they’ve been out of sync by just 0.5 - 1 seconds.
I only do this to see if they’re out of sync.
Sure, you do ;)
It’s not him
yeah cause they use external recording with there 8k red camera and sync up the audio. so i guess they have a bit of a hard time getting it perfect :(
Don't judge them too hard syncing audio is ridiculously difficult
"Ow, my soft RUclipsr feet" - that was hilarious!
FAST = Fast, eAsy, STable
As smooth as linus' transitions to the sponsored content.
That looks like a really nice house
I like all the horns. They act like WiFi antennae.
rememeber the kids lived in the basement
Who would win?
A engineering masterpiece of router technology
Or some $5 ethernet cable
Young linus = ninja
and every other kid growing up in the early 90's
Linus is such a nice guy.He breaks in people houses to install better Wi-Fi.
The hot tub. A place where internet is of utmost importance. But of course, electronics and water go well together, right?
If you have a phone or tab that is IP68, that's no problem actually.
Toasterbath
Why are they blurring out the LG logo on the laptop.
Was it in Asus contract to blur anything that is not Asus related or an Asus product?
I don't know which editor but they're not all blurred out.
MaxBeast4Z he forgot the LG logo at 9.25
I don't think Asus asked them to. It's just kind of common sense to not show competitors logos in a sponsored video.
It’s most likely because they don’t have a current sponsorship with LG and as they are a big tech channel they can’t show LG products unless there sponsored by then
The funny thing is Linus even refers to it as "the gram" and as you said they missed it at times. Seems pointless to blur that logo anyway.
Eman2000 I was thinking that 😂😂😂
meanwhile in 2018 average Philippine household...
stream HD movie on TV, the entire family watches because their bandwidth is devoured... FAMILY TIME!!!!
meanwhile in australia on ADSL...
everyone watches in 240p because we are 3KM from the exchange and can barely get better than dialup, during all this im out in my caravan watching in 1080p using my phones unlimited 3G data
well the ADSL at the house sucks ass even at 4AM with nobody else using it i cant get more than about 400kb/sec out of it
and during early evening its practically useless for anything other than browsing text based internet pages like wikipedia
also
optus has already tried disconnecting me based on the fair use policy due to me downloading 200GB in less than a month over a 3G data connection
i sent them an email with the rules against false advertising and the following dictionary definition
unlimited
adjective:
1. not limited or restricted in terms of number, quantity, or extent.
example: unlimited data means i can use as much data as i want without consequence
they have not tried disconnecting me again for almost 2 months so far
But the internet here is fk up says 15mb/s but only experience between 410kl/s im serious
thats because internet companies advertise in bits per second (even though we download data in bytes per second)
they do this because the number is 8 times bigger and it sounds better in advertising
its stupid as fuck and i think they should not be allowed to do it
imagine buying a hard drive that stored 8 terabits then find out its only equal to 1 terabyte, i bet you would be pissed off
My household is Philippian and the internet in this area is just bad. Even with two different internet providers the internet service sucxs.
I used to love that stuff! These days I only want it to work! 1 router, 1 or more APs if you can run cables, Repeater if you can't! Done!
James' stepdad does not go hunting, he goes killing.
I rather turn an old router into another access point that's just me, it's way better then a repeater, and doesn't cost anything more.
but then ur routers will interfere w eachother
You can use different channels to avoid that.
Providing an optimized list of APs to roam to, aka Neighbor Reports (802.11k)
Providing information about the traffic load on other APs (802.11v)
Speeding up the roaming process by providing fast authentication (802.11r)

According to the SmallNetBuilder article ASUS AiMesh uses a proprietary system to do roaming, with no support mentioned for 802.11k/v/r.
Oops, I meant "two 4x4 5 Ghz bands for clients" in the last sentence, not "8x8 5 Ghz".
I have the ASUS RT-N66U Dark Knight router. Got it in 2013. Still amazing today. The 5Ghz band is great.
Pimp my wifi is back
what happens if you didnt blur out the razer logo? =)
Gerome Fournier Razer would ask for money and if linus refused, Razer would take the video down.
i was thinking more like the other way around, asus wouldn't pay mr sebastian since another brand shows up in the video
Gerome Fournier that could be as well!
4:07 But can I attack the left router's weak point for massive damage?
What's wrong with the audio? Example: 9:25 and 3:26
I just IAMeshed three RT-AC66U B1 Routers, Refurbs, $60 each.
Has Linus been cheating with an employee all this time?
Ubiquiti Unifi APs FTW. Simple and works flawlessly.
That is what I would have suggested. We have a Unifi AC PRO as a main AP and a Unifi N AP connected wirelessly for remote CCTV. It would work better with a MIMO AP but the extra range the N would give is zero.
I find the management system awkward, though.
Andreas the management system like any industrial product will take some learning. Now I can create sites and setup the APs in a site in a few minutes.
The evolution of infomercials is amazing
Gotta love the ol' F.A.S.T. acronym from Asus
Fast eAsy STable
"soft RUclipsr feet" 😂😂 i love and all of this
nbns a fukn joke, they probs raised the price due to the influx of people wanting better internet.
I’m cramming and studying at the last minute with your channel and RUclips
"I'm on, I'm on 5 gigahertz" that was the best.
9:17
Audio and Video is completely out of sync :( DAMN YOU, PREMIER.
there something about that intro this time around that was smooth as hell
Damn...that's a lot of antlers...
James’ father-in-law likes his trophies. Wow.
OLD Routers??
John D II I know right my rt-ac68r is still perfect for my internet connection.
OLD *ASUS Routers
I was like, "Oh, my '05 routers would be workable again!!!" But no, 2013 is apparently a long time ago now...
Dude my router is from 2010, aparently thats stone age now.
Nice for LG's logo to get a spot at 9:15, and the shot after in an Asus sponsored video
D O M I C I L E
Linus I don't know why you explained it like this but this is very, very simplistic in comparison to how you explain tech in other areas.
I just set up lan-lan cascading between a few old shitty (but still wireless N) routers.
TheDrakenZ how do you do this and can it be done with any routers ?
Lucky Rooster but how do I connect them all
There's a thing called powerline, then plug ethernets into little wifi repeaters.
Chaim Goldbaum problem solved.
Chaim Goldbaum however powerlines often don’t work well with multi-story homes. For example. My powerline is the office near the front of the house, but the power lines on other sides get around 1/10 of the speed. But at least it’s better than WiFi
Chaim Goldbaum repeaters are garbage thoug. They've always been shit and now are obsolete with the new mesh tech
I had powerline, worked awesome when I got it but it went to shite after a while, I'm guessing the neighbors also got it and the interference killed it and I put 16 CAT 6 runs in instead with 2 APs. They had ethernet runs around the house too so just put APs on those.
Yuki Kitsune True mesh is the future, but to expensive for most people atm
Last time I tried an Asus router the 2.4 GHz range dropped at 5 meters just behind the first door, while my old TP-LINK worked 18 meters away at the end of the corridor. Direct sight: my iPhone 4s worked beyond 85 meters. Four story house without a repeater: no problem. 1043ND has a great range.
This video is purposely stretched to over 10 mins just so that could stick another ad in it....
villen Every youtuber does that
you mean they purposely make a living?
Yeah something like that
ever heard of adblock?
use it, its amazing
My AC1900 was a hot mess of random reboots that even the open source community couldn't fix. It left a bad tase in my mouth about their wireless products (at least of the era).
RT-AC68U running merlin here, no issues at all
Guys you have the best channel on youtube ever, this is the first time i would bother to write a comment for a channel (true story :D), well done guys all the love and support
6:33 😂😂😂!!!
Fucking REKT
EEEWWWW
Linus used to be a middle-aged lesbian
Guy Ingocnito He used to be feminist
I had a laughter attack with the "screams in 56k" lol
James pulling some favours at work to impress the in-laws. Slick.
My wifi is so bad that I have to watch a video in 144p on a 1080p screen. And I have to wait for it to buffer. My latency is about 800 m/s on a good day.
The Cheeto Bomb try powerline adapters. Works great for me.
@The Cheeto Bomb : Going by the latency you mention, sounds like you're on a satellite internet connection.
"Screams in 56k".... i am dead xD
5:00 thats no headcrab router, thats the dark(web)altar, used to summon more wifi.
At 3:25 my Google Home Mini kept going off whenever I replayed it.
GRAnimated noticed the same thing, it only understood "volume" as the command being given. It's more like 3:23 or 3:24 though.
7:57 pretty sure it just "grabs" the Mac addresses and matches them with a database.
smoked_out
But is it even necesary?
3:58,I can't stop laughing, can somebody please help me
Why are the logos on their laptops blurred out for parts of the video?
The video was sponsored by ASUS. So i guess they removed the competing brand logo's.
Because the video is sponsored and ASUS decided they want only their brand seen and heard.
niZe1996fan sounds familiar 🤔
Because the video's sponsored, so ASUS likey didn't want the brands of competitors on the video.
too bad the LG logo is still visible at 9:18
guess linus wont be seeing any of that sweet youtube money
Nice work on the blur of the LG logo on the laptop!
Darn it only works on ASUS
He specifically says that it's not the only system like this available, not even the only one ASUS has. He's just using it as an example due to REASONS.
5:28 @TaranVH that was great
😂 Ha ha ha ha
So now Linustech has become a commercial. It's been fun.
And I'm here with 2mbps connection
Boi the most I’ve ever been able to run a YT vid on is 480p when no one else was doing anything and I was right next to the wifi
whoever edited this video.... props
Me using OLD LAPTOP as router. Who else does?
