    I new exactly what you were going to explain. From an understanding pov in miss the meters everytime I'm mixing a song, so I completely agree!

    I don't know if this is outdated, but the built in compressor does have a reduction meter, but I've only been able to access it 2 ways: (1) pick a patch in the library (left hand side of GB) that happens to have the reduction meter (for example, some of the vocal patches), or (2) create a new audio track and it will default to having compression with the reduction meter in the smart control bar. Strangely, if you remove the plugin, you can't just re-add it to get the reduction meter back. You can only get it on the track creation (or the selection of a patch that displays it). One more gotcha: the reduction meter is not numbered, but at least you get visual feedback of some sort.

    If you go in to the plugins menu and choose Audio Units from Apple, and then choose the AUdynamicsprocessor you'll get a compressor with a great visual display of what is going on. That plugin is a stock plugin that comes with GarageBand. :)

    Thanks for this very informative video that helps one to bypass the limitations of the unpredictable GB's compressor. Colin, could you please explain in a separate video about the individual actions of the various parameters that are available in Specomp viz. threshold, Ratio, Makeup gain; Bypass, release attack and knee? Such a tutorial, from a talented teacher as you, will be of great help to many of us who occupy the room of the unlearned. We will then be able to produce better quality music. Regards.

      That’s a great idea, Dr. Somanna! I’ve got a video idea cooking up to hopefully do just that.

    I think the Dynamics Processor inside of GB is also another great work around to get a visual of the amount of compression and at what db the compressor is actually kicking on.

      Agreed! I wish it had a specific GR meter, but it it's definitely easier to tell what's going on with that compressor

    Having been playing around in Logic for the past few days after recording loads in Garageband, the things I'd love in GB is the ability to Bus tracks out, have a proper mixer window and yes, get some metering in there. GB is still great, but Logic just allows a bit more flexibility (plus the stock plug ins all have meters where you would expect them)

      Sean! You’re in that perfect position to make the Logic leap. You’ve been recording for a long time and have made mixes that sound awesome!

      @@TheBandGuide Thing is, I'm so used to GB and because I know it inside out and have my way of working with it's limitations (not necessarily a bad thing by the way), Logic is freaking me out a bit with all the additional bells and whistles!

    Thank you so much Colin! Amazing tips to take into account. Could you talk about Logic Remote feature in Garagband? I think it can have great benefits when mixing but not sure if it will make the difference.
    Best regards, keep making great content.

      Thank you, Rodrigo! I actually didn't realize Logic Remote could control GarageBand but it appears you are correct... I just might have to do video on this 🤔🤔

    Hi Colin- I'm wondering if you could do a video on whether or not it's necessary to switch to mono at some point while mixing? I've heard this from other videos on mixing but don't really understand what it is, how to do it, or why it would be necessary. Thanks!

    These plugins look great! I wish I could make them work. (I'm on Big Sur.) I was really interested in the LOADED plugin for compression. I tried every Mac link, Component, VST, VST3, and the AU - nothing. When I launch GB, it errors out saying can't 'verify the developer'. I saw there was another comment about using Terminal as a work-around, but I couldn't get that to work either. I think I'll wait a few months and try it again. They look good though and a lot of positive feedback about them.

    Great,thanks Colin! Personally an other thing I find annoying in GB is how automations are managed. Once you automate a volume while producing a track, the volume knob becomes completely useless in The mixing phase. I tried to fix it automating the gain instead, but this impacts how plug ins work...how do you manage it?

    I know this isn't unique to garageband but do you think you could do a bit on adding swing to recordings? I'm struggling to understand it enough to compute. I can hear what it does but can't dissect it enough to understand it properly.

    Thanks for all the incredible tips you’ve given us, I’m an entirely different engineer than I was before I started watching you. At the moment I’m having an extremely confusing time after seeing some videos on Mixing in Mono. I hadn’t seen them until after I got entirely through the 6 step mixing process videos and now I’m absolutely stuck. I did the direction mixer and as I’m listening everything is just weird. I’m afraid to mess with the eq and compression I had previously done during the 6 steps. Please help lol

    Great video, Colin! I’ll try this out. What’s the ideal range in Db for the speed compressor? 3-4 db?

    • @TheBandGuide
      @TheBandGuide  3 года назад +2

      That's a great question! It depends on the source and attack/release, but 3-4db is a good starting point for most sources. Sometimes aggressive compression on drums I'm looking for more like 7-10db though!

    How to sidechain with GB

  • @punchmehard
    @punchmehard 3 года назад

    Sure, they’re not great, but at least GB actually HAS compressors. Not having sends or busses is worse. Ok, they have the echo and the reverb, but that’s it, just two sends. And they HAVE to be echo and reverb.
