For the SRL (retractable) it would really help if you clipped to a front D ring instead of back... your'e mostly facing up hill on the roofing job, so it won't be pulling over your shoulders and you can be on your knees more easily with a front D ring. However, retractables are not really recommended on most roof jobs unless you can tie off with an over head safety system. Keep in mind that the cable or webbing on the SRL will be constantly rubbing on a foot area tie off, which will lead to eventual fraying of the cable or webbing... not to mention very possible shingle damage, especially on like that dormer you were walking around.

Great comparison. I wasn't aware of the retractable kind. I think I would prefer the rope too, though in some cases I'd just throw the end off the roof so it would be out of the way. I'm considering roofing my own house this summer and I'll definitely be using a safety harness.
