@dylanthumb I TOTALLY TOTALLY agree with you, the hair stands up on the back of my neck at 0.59! I taped this show when it was shown on BBC back in '95 shortly after Rory's death, I was 19 and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The power of this is just unbelievable...
I had heard Taste and saw them live. Then, one day, walking into a friends house, I heard this on the stereo----turned up to the top as I walked in the door. That was it!!! I was a Rory fan all the way!
I would love to see Ford Motor Company pick up this classic for their commercials, I think it's time they learn of this gem. Rory loved Fords, I read he bought Muddy Waters Ford tour Van and proceeded to tour Eurpoe in it. The man loved Muddy and his Ford. Most awesome I'd say.
I got to see Rory at the Wiskey a go go in the mid 70s. we just about had a riot when the fire marshal tried to shut the show down. After about an hour of trying to get everyone to leave the owner came out and said " I might not be open tomorrow but the show will go on". Rory play till about 3:00 am.
My first exposure to Rory was 8Track. This was before many of you were born. Loved it in my car, (1966 Ford Fairlane) and back then, we listened to an entire album... There is great music out there now, just more difficult to find. Look, and you will be happy to see the influence, that is still out there. Long live Rory. Form a weekend warrior live sound guy, who, would have loved to have done sound for you.
Happy Birthday Rory. You'd be 62 now, still number 1 in my book. Fords got some real souped up cars now. 2010 Supercharged Cobra Jet Mustang!!! 3 cheers for Rory, the Ford guy.
Damn right!!! He makes that pill bottle sound insane Hes the only man who emulates the sound of a car reving and changing forward gears with his Slide! Its face melting to say the least . He is a master of the slide guitar. I miss him so much. Wish i could take him for a spin in his souped up ford. You are sorley missed Rory
Always my favorite Rory song. Hairs standing up on my neck as I write this. I'm gonna plug into my 8x10 and play along with the best damned guitarist. Cheers Rory!!!!
Taste had a live album from the Isle of Wight; that's when I became aware of this awesome guitarist - such a strong, bluesy rock voice too. RIP Rory Gallagher - went too soon but inspired so many and put out a ton of great stuff.
P.S. This is also a great vid because it shows Rory stinging the Telecaster (even though the famous beat-up Strat was evidently his favorite guitar). He was a maestro of the electric guitar. And he could blow most folks out of the water with electric sitar, harmonica, mandolin, acoustic guitars, saxophone... and probably a whole bunch of other instruments.
The greatest Irish Guitar Player that ever walked the face of the earth. U2 are good songwriters, but they were never as hot as Rory's band. Lou, Rod, and Gerry were amazing musicians also.
Rory is just an amazing guitarist, seen him a few times live, left every time drained with a sense of seeing one of the best shows ive seen, what a loss to the music world in my opinion, souped up ford was the closing song, amazing....
In the early years with Taste Rory played slide mostly on the telecaster in open tunings, later on he played a lot of his slide work on the strat in standard tuning.
I was fortunate enough to see Rory destroy so many bands he opened for in the 70s. Deep Purple for one. Saw him do the same to Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson asked the crowd how they were supposed to follow Rory after he blew up the stage with his performance in '76. What an axeman. I swear he came back and played "Messin' With The Kid" along with Tull at the end.
Generally when he played slide or in open tunings he didn't use the strat. In fact in this concert he hardly used the strat at all. Thanks for watching.
@77pob Hey man, have it on video from when they re-broadcast it in 1995 (just after Rory's death) on BBC, first time since its original airing in '76. Fantastic show, blows your head off. I could've sworn someone told me that it was on DVD a while back, maybe I imagined it
Rory, is so awesome , he can do anything he wanted to do. I do not want to sound rude but he probably taught Duane a thing to two, and so many others .
@77pob Not the whole concert officially anyway, there is a DVD of a collection of Old Grey Whistle Test songs though which does have one of Rory's songs from this concert, not sure which one though
OK, another try . . . STE KELLY? Its STE PIKE. You should remember we watched this in The Market pub, Bridge St, St Helens. A teeny bit tipsy? Tiny piece of California Sunshine . . .Pete Bullen's sister WAS John Cleese with a wig on . . . .? Blagged our way into l8r demolished CF MOTT College with couple girls who never clocked we were behind them,Beer 18p a pint in subsidised plastic glasses. U found a vinyl record cleaning kit in the gutter on our walk home. Cud there be a more random evening?
Of course to say anyone is the BEST it is subjective and purley my opinion. Duane was, as we all know one of the best ever. I just enjoy Rory's style and technique a bit better. I didnt intend to mean he was better than all the rest, I personnally don't beleive in that. To me there is no best musician, guitarist, whatever, just different.
HEY Ste Kelly? Friend of Al Roughley? The Apprentice Hippy? Him, not you. St Helens Tech Coll? Circa 1975? Any more info? Er. Pete Bullen and air rifle? Frank Zappa, Bongo Fury? Clifton on Sea in Bath, ur coz Paul. That Scrumpy thats made me this weird? You There?

Ferocious, he was a man on fire, my Morris Minor was never the same after putting Rory into the cassette player. God, what passion!
As my buddies Dad used to say, "Get in, shut up, buckle up and HOLD ONE!!!!"
Best slide guitarist ever, Best live player , this song is a classic !!!
The man is an Irish rock legend in every aspect of the word ,
What a showman.........Never to be repeated.........They broke the mold.......

Happy Birthday Rory. You'd be 62 now, still number 1 in my book.

3 cheers for Rory, the Ford guy.
So much joy. So much skill. So much feeling. So much awesomeness...
That old pill bottle is sure soundin sweet. Rory is the best slide player I've ever seen. And I've seen a few.
wonderfull!!
Rory Gallagher-Recorded on the 2nd of March 1976 - Rory's 28th Birthday - on the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test. 💕
Saw him in Munich that year, if I'm not mistaken. It cannot get any better.
RIP Rory. Thanx for all the years of music, especially the songs you wrote! I learned to play blues inspired by an Irishman ... rory,Rory,RORY ...
Thanx Paul Kinley ...
Damn right!!! He makes that pill bottle sound insane

My mind is boggled, and my jaw is slacked! WOW!

Made Ol' Henry PROUD on this one!
Smokin!!
Rory and the band continue on for 15 minutes after the official close of the program
Fantastic
I can see why Jimi Hendrix said Rory was the greatest guitarist in the world
Sorry.....that was just Jimi being modest...
I agree. Jimi was a great player but Rory could play anything and make it sound great.
Who's Jimi Hendrix ? ;)
@@williammendes253 😄
One of the greatest songs ever from the best guitarist in the world.
This song makes me want a 2010 Super Cobra Jet Mustang. And I'm a GM guy. Thanks Rory.
always in our hearts Rory, old and young, male and female, sons and daughters, we will remember you :D
Fecking awesome....
Great to hear, Bad Penny was the one that made me pick up a guitar. I love Gallagher's slide work, so underrated.
Still magnificent after all these years.
This has to be the ultimate slide
And chord experience
The greatest Irish Guitar Player that ever walked the face of the earth. U2 are good songwriters, but they were never as hot as Rory's band. Lou, Rod, and Gerry were amazing musicians also.
Yes Chris
It's mentally destroying that they have gone
Sorry Chris
Gerry is still here
Loving the tribute concerts

Love this song! Love him! =)
The absolute master of his craft.
Rory is just an amazing guitarist, seen him a few times live, left every time drained with a sense of seeing one of the best shows ive seen, what a loss to the music world in my opinion, souped up ford was the closing song, amazing....
My favourite Rory song
There are great guitarists and then there is Rory Gallagher. Never been equalled and never will be.
Hyperbolic much??
As always, Rory is astonishing.
In Memory of Rory`s birthday
I love how he imitates the guitar sound with his voice he had a great voice
I think it's the only time he left his guitar a so long time to play harmonica and his playing is awesome too
In the early years with Taste Rory played slide mostly on the telecaster in open tunings, later on he played a lot of his slide work on the strat in standard tuning.
excellent..
Faved again, magic blues from the G man!!
Rory gets into your soul ..... he is the GUITAR lovers person..so well played
Back to them days were you plugged your guitar into the amp with one pedal and played. That Tele through that Fender sure sounds great.
The Wizard of Blues, my all time favorite number,
I was fortunate enough to see Rory destroy so many bands he opened for in the 70s. Deep Purple for one. Saw him do the same to Jethro Tull. Ah it feels pretty bad ass to share the same birthday as Rory haha
Now that's an intro!
Awesome ..
I drive a souped up Ford :)
No really you 've got a Ford Capri? A very nice Ford! Did it drive fast?
Just great!
Great! How's it going pádraig? Listening and enjoying now - second time around!
Generally when he played slide or in open tunings he didn't use the strat. In fact in this concert he hardly used the strat at all. Thanks for watching.
The GOAT
If you want to play guitar learn from Rory Gallagher
Just love the slide on this
Thanks man, and i love your Skynyrd videos, they're one of my all time favourite bands.

You listen to something one minute and swear its the BEST! Then a minute later you beg to differ. Duanne Eric Rory Alvin etc etc.
Rory, is so awesome , he can do anything he wanted to do. I do not want to sound rude but he probably taught Duane a thing to two, and so many others .
Well the whole concert is on youtube so you could download each song separately, there's only 6 songs.
@padraig314 This needs a full DVD release!!
Allmannnnnn!
I believe he had a Zephyr six at one time
@77pob Not the whole concert officially anyway, there is a DVD of a collection of Old Grey Whistle Test songs though which does have one of Rory's songs from this concert, not sure which one though
