Super late response, but it's a bug. They're supposed to actually tank a decent amount of damage, and slowly fall apart and lose pieces as you hurt them, but they just have their HP set to 1 on the initial release of the game. The "revision 1" version of the game fixes that.

Man, the Kingpin sure was weird in the 90's.
This feels like a mashup of Mega Man, Rocket Knight Adventures, the Rocketeer, and Strong Bad ;)

I hated the ninja boss so much. All these falling crates, his insane reach - damn him !
