Watched RRR the other day and it ends with a musical number where they wave the very early nationalist flag of india. Was very interesting to learn about. It actually predates the one you show and has the eight lotuses on it.
Its called the Calcutta flag. It was first hoisted in 1906 and later a variant was unfurled in Germany in 1908 by Madam Bhikhaji Cama, Savarkar and one other freedom fighter whose name escapes me currently.
The lotuses signified the provinces India had back then. I dont recall the exact symbolism off hand but it had the sun and the moon as well, along with "Vande Mataram" (hail the great mother {homeland}) in Sanskrit (from a poem in a very famous piece of nationalist literature called Anandmath) along with colours representing the peoples of the country.
Most movies based around that time show that flag, even in Subhash the forgotten Hero, when Bose meets hitler the flag is the Vande Mataram flag.
Is that movie actually good? I usually avoid over the top "masculinity" shitfest south movies, and anyone I talked to say it was shit. Still it was very successful.

Ashok Chakra was an important symbol used by Emperor Ashoka of the massive Mauryan Empire (when a united India was at its largest extent ever). This chakra is present on the 2 millennia old Lion Capital at Sarnath whose ruins survived till modern era. The Lion Capital was chosen to be the National Emblem (coat of arms) of independent India, and the chakra on that lion capital was placed on the flag.

@@davidezra8497 only the Tamil Nadu and Kerala states were not captured. Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh were parts of the Mauryan Empire. So you can't say they didn't captured south totally. They only didn't captured parts of Southern India.

South kings were under indirect control of Ashoka. It's not written anywhere that he didn't capture south. He just didn't want Madrasis to meet the same fate that Kalinga people did.

The Ashoka Chakra is also important because the first time India united as a country was 2000 years ago under the Mauryan emperor Ashoka, the chakra was a symbol used in that period. I think this is a important point that was missed in the video.

There are a few more flags from the independence movement, such as the first flag besigned by Sister Nivedita in 1904, or the Calcutta flag. Also the home rule flag raised by Bal Gangadhar Tilak was influential.
As a side note, the congress flag with the spinning wheel was used as the flag for the Provisional Azad Hind (Free India) government under Subhash Chandra Bose with help from the japanese during the second Big Kerfuffle.

Bengal is not the northeast of India. It is just east. The "Seven Sisters and one brother" region comprising of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura is the northeast of India.

Hello Hilbert. I have mentioned before that there were rumours of Indian ancestry from part of my family that were said to have served in India. I was also the kind of kid who loved knowing country flags, so this was a very enjoyable watch and I learned from it too.
The second one (with a loom at the centre) was adopted by Azad Hind ("Free India") & the Indian National Army under the leadership of Subhas Chandra Bose in collaboration with the Axis powers during WW2.
Wrong, Azad hind government's official flag had tiger instead of spinning wheel/charka.

Any reason why a few British colonies, like India or Canada, had a red background on their flag, but most others were blue?
My theory is perhaps it’s tied to trading.
The British merchant navy uses a red ensign (union flag corner on a red background), so I wonder if it’s linked with anything mercantile like that but I don’t know.
I just know Canada had lots of fur trade and India had a lot of trading too.

I can only speak for my country but this is a quick thing I stole from the net. Our flag is normally blue but we also have a red and black one with different meanings.
A red version of the flag, officially called the Red Ensign and nicknamed the "red duster", was adopted in 1903 to be flown on non-government ships. It was flown on New Zealand merchant ships during both world wars.

Ashoka inherited a stable and powerful empire from his grandfather and father and seems to have administered it well enough.

A lot of what you repeated is just straight up Buddhist and Ashokan propaganda. A realm so peaceful and stable doesn't come apart so soon after his death, which is what started to happen once he died. It was very good propaganda though, especially his Kalinga war story and his repentance, which he conveniently forgot to mention in his stone edicts in Kalinga itself. Guess he didn't want the people who lived after his destruction to hear about his repentance.
Truth is, the man was a brilliant leader and he kept his realm stable through an extremely good network of spies.
No, he didn't attack or defeat the Greeks - you are attributing deeds of his grandfather to him.
The Greeks on his border were already at peace with his realm, which is why he was able to send Buddhist missionaries to them.
And no, it's highly unlikely he could have conquered Southern India - the Tamil Kings were no pushovers and the Cholas didn't exactly have bad relations with the Mauryan kings, so creating a conflict when there was none isn't exactly the smartest thing to do.
All in all, the Mauryan state utilized Chanakya's strategies brilliantly and Ashoka was well versed in them
But a charismatic leader can hold such a state only as long he lives.
Once Ashoka passed, his realm started breaking apart.
This doesn't mean we can't appreciate Ashoka and his realm but let's not look at it through rose tinted glasses.
His symbol was chosen primarily because he was the earliest representation of an Indian Emperor whose realm actually covered a signficant part of what became the current Indian state and since he was known to have advocated for peace in his later years, it worked perfectly with the theme of the new Indian state, with its emphasis on Gandhian principles.

The Dharmachakra (the Eternal Wheel of Law) is a MUCH better representative of India than that old weird symbol, and it helps invoke empathy for India from lots of Buddhist societies also. :)
King Ashoka was one of the very first Indian kings to unite the country, the dharma chakra thing is not very intrinsic to India unlike tibetan and tantric philosophies.....so it made much more sense to use the Ashoka Chakra as not only a symbol of buddhism but also a united and strong India

The Europeans were trading with India and China overland, the land route was called the silk road and the sea route was called the spice route, the problem was that both these routes had to pass thru the middle East, and after the advent of Islam and the crusaders vs islam war the Muslims ( Arabs) blockaded the ( Christian) Europeans and would not allow them to use their territory as a transit route, thus forcing the Europeans to look for a alternate sea route that would bypass the middle East. One of those attempts led to the accidental discovery of the Americas. The other one hit the bull's eye, which ended in a disaster for India and China leading to 200 year's of humiliation. But now the wheel has turned the full circle of time ....
Being an Indian I was taught in school that the different colours represented diffrent abstract attributs such as strength, courage, fertility of the land etc. We were taught that in 3rd grade social studies. It never made sense once I got older since why'd you use colours of the dominant religious communities to represent different concepts, and call one of them saffron, which is just of a shade of orange and wouldn't be considered a different colour were it not for the spice and hinduism/buddhism
I was taught that Saffron stands for courage (not sure but something similar), White for purity, peace, Green for nature, blue for sky and 24 spikes in the wheel as representing 24 hours in a day (ie standing forever - eternal) but reality is something else.

That is all interesting. I think Vedanta is just true. Once you get a name for a faith though... the Dao De Jing talks about it a lot. I believe Brahman is a cognate of the Dao.

I really don't understand Krishna very well at all on the otherhand. The Bhagavad Gita is all I have really read of him, and his role there is so ... Allah-like? Couldn't find an image of him I could really form.
Any recommendation as to what to read to get a better sense of Krishna's personality?
Jesus is so full of character if you read the Bible correctly. Krishna is explained more in something outside the Mahabharata I imagine. But I only know the two Epics, and then the Upanishads (a lot of self evident truth in that, so I get bored) and of course the Vedas. Which just seem really behind me.
You guys have the clearest picture of the Cosmos I can imagine anyone putting together. Mormons still have the true faith, of course, since Hinduism lacks Churchss and Mormon elders Love hearing about the Ramayana and Vedanta. The spinning wheel harked back to the historical fact that India has for millennia been the global leader in production and export of cotton textiles, which, as the Scottish historian William Dalrymple noted, turned Bengal into the richest place in the world by the 1600s.
I doubt we could have ever adapted a British flag in our flag like the Australians or the New Zealanders. Because they are literally the same people, more or less. Most natives of their lands were killed and the European migrants colonized it. And therefore thought/still think of themselves as, you know European or British... and so they are still the part of the British crown. We on the other hand are an independent and very different people. Moreover the British weren't really kind to us, they were facists and arguably just as bad to us as the Germans were to the Jewish people. And we wanted "poorna sawaraj"(total independence) if the britsh had resisted for even another year or two, things could've gone violent. Only because of Gandhi's non-violent bs did British leave without having to fight. Many factions like the communists already were there and other major factions were also propping up. Like the "Azad Hind fauj" and they wanted to strike Britain with a sword... and many were sympathetic to their cause. Like Subash Chandra Bose quite famously said, "You give me blood(your lives as Martyrs), I will give you freedom"

In India, the different colors are symbolic of different virtues. Green for fertility, white for peace, etc The 24 spokes of the wheels represent 24 other virtues of human life. This is what i was taught in history books in India. I have not read anything about what is being explained here.

The wheel represents the Mauryan empire. India's first unified empire which Alexander the great was running away from founded by Chandragupta Maurya.
No Maurya was formed after Alexander, at Alexanders time north India ruled by Nanda empire.
You might want to take note of two things first the Mauryans came long after the death of Alexander.
Second Alexander wanted to invade India but his troops refused to march into India so no war happened.
Therefor he did not run away, rather he was refused the opportunity to invade/go to India.

Idea of India being a nation was here way before the British came. We were unified thrice before by Maurya Empire, Gupta Empire and the Mughal Empire with each having it's flags.
You didn't even explain the history of Ashoka Chakra and where is comes from.
The Mauryan Emperor Ashoka used that wheel (chakra) on his pillar edicts. It was a symbol of Maurya Empire.
By this way today's Indian nation state is connected to the ancient Mauryan Empire.
Even our National Emblem the four lions were first used by Ashoka as the design on his iron pillar edicts. You can look up the image of that iron pillar.

The meaning of our flag colours has changed after independence. As described by former President S. Radhakrishnan, we are now taught that saffron represents sacrifice and courage, white represents peace and green represents prosperity (through agriculture). Wheel represents the circle of life and death, and this symbolism is very important to Indian philosophy, including Islamic philosophy. There was a small grammar mistake. The person who designed my country (India)'s flag was called 'Pingli Venkayya' not Pingali Venkayya with an 'a'. Otherwise, the video was good.

I just want to add a couple more things :-
First, the Ashoka Chakra was the State Emblem of Ashoka the Great, who was the only internal Indian ruler who was able to Conquer, Subjugate and Unite the entirety of the Indian Subcontinent. However, it is said that after his conquests, he was so horrified by the violence and it's consequences that he converted from Hinduism to Buddhism, adopted the Chakra ☸ and decreed a reign of peace that lasted for another couple of generations until the Mauryan Empire started collapsing.
Thus for modern Indians, the Ashoka Chakra represents both the Territorial Integrity and Peaceful Nature of our country along with a Secular Identity. It's also kind of a promise or oath, that India will never wage a War of Conquest on any foreign Nation.
Secondly, I would like to elaborate a bit more on the EIC conquering my home state Bengal. Bengal was the most productive state of the second most prosperous and productive country of the world at the time, and produced about 12% of the World's GDP. While the EIC was a company of one of the lesser backwater states of Europe, who were weaker than both Portugal and the Netherlands just a few decades back.
In a mordern comparison, it would be equivalent to a Company from Australia or New Zealand conquering all of California. I am still baffled as to how the company was able to do it (even with the support of Trators) and why no local power was able to retaliate or capitalise even after the province was conquered.

The flag that Mountbatten suggested was for the Dominion of India and Dominion of Pakistan, the last step toward independence i.e, not the flag for independent India and Pakistan. The basic idea is to symbolise that the transition is peaceful and not abrupt, which may contribute to unrest during the transition (as in, the British is still keeping watch during the Dominion period, so there's nothing to worry if something does go wrong). This flags would then be replaced with the independent country flags once full government institution and the country have stabilized within the new country .
Well, politics get in the way as both Pakistan and Indian politician would prefer to rush through it, so any symbol of British hanging around would damage them politically. Thus, the big mess of Partition.
Yeah yeah, let's free the Brits of all the blame. They were not blameless here btw. And whether or not the flags had the Jack on it or not, India and Pakistan WERE dominions for 3 whole years. Why do you think the new boundary wasn't published earlier but rather kept a secret until the last minute by India and Pakistan? Had the partition happened during British rule, at the very least they would be able to plan for it whatever happened after but the politicians are too stubborn to even see how it would create a disaster.

What if instead of trying to rush the independence process, they start discussion on which area are Pakistan and which were India, delaying it until all have been settled instead of letting the British do it?
