I met her (Shan) when I was sixteen. I was instantly attracted to her. We hung out for a week and I realised I could be myself around her. She made feel good about being me. I told her at the end of that week that I was going to marry her one day. She laughed. A few months later she left for Scotland to study aircraft engineering. She was away for 5 years and during that time I dated many girls. I was dead inside, I realised one day that it was because I was comparing these relationships to what I had with Shan (Nick name).
She came back, we got back together, we got married. It still is amazing, but we have had to work hard at our marriage, sometimes more so than not. I can still be me, I don't have to pretend, I can say whatever I feel, whatever I fear and it's all okay. It's been a hell of a journey and I look forward to any more amazing years.

I think it's not always about finding the one, but more about making somebody (that you like) the one by working on yourself and vice versa. I think most of these things you can work on if you don't already possess these characteristics. It's about willingness to do better and get better. Some of my ways I knew my husband was the one are;
1. We disagree openly and honestly without taking it personal that we have different opinions.
2. We are completely opposite and because of that we help balance one another.
3. We enjoy our differences because we see it as an opportunity to learn something new
4. We ended up wanting to better ourselves because we could finally see ourselves through each others eyes and knew we deserved to be the best versions of ourselves without being forced.
5. We challenge each other. We force each other to step outside our comfort zone in order to make ourselves acknowledge what we usually try to avoid.
6. We helped each other find our strengths in our weakest moments.
7. We validate each others feelings. We share our goals. We create our dreams and encourage each other along the way.
This is beautiful, sad to say I thought I had a lot of these common with this woman I fell in love with and I could definitely feel her love for me too. But things got messed up between us and her past led to us ending before we even started, especially because we began as friends. But I'll still always be around her to support when I can from a respectable distance.

I always thought 'The One' should have common interest or opinions with you. But this is interesting.
@@RegumRai It's not that important! Similar values and morals are more important in the long term. I remember in high school still I would hope that my boyfriend would dress like this and listen to that, since I enjoyed those things and aesthetics. In my now relationship I don't see those things important at all. Surely it is nice if you have some common interest like excersise or traveling, but in grand picture much bigger things matter than what do you think about certain bad or food :)

I have the most amazing partner. I love him and feel truly blessed to have him in my life. What you said about our exposure to certain media influencing our ideas about love really hit home for me. As a young lady in my 20s I keep getting bombarded with the message (in subtle and not so subtle ways) to marry rich or find a sugar daddy... It's really bad. My partner is not rich but he treats me with so much kindness and love. The messages I have recieved have made me question my relationship and if I have chosen the right person. When you find the one, you don't really crave for a relationship with them, you just love them, respect them, care them. You wish for them to have whatever they want in life. You want them to be happy. You wouldn't be interested in someone else when you find the one. You wouldn't give up and move on even when the whole world says you to.
