    Hughes is really someone people should aspire to be like. He's kind, visiting Ed in the hospital, and opening up his home and family to Winry (adopting her lol). He's capable (his knife throwing skills are top notch), he's intelligent, and observant. And he loves his family.
    I don't know if anyone has said, but the series was written and drawn by a lady who grew up on a dairy farm. She's awesome!

    Yeah, the melon thing struck me as weird, too, but gifting fruit is, in fact, a Japanese tradition.
    I think I remember melons having a "health" superstition/good luck charm associated with them because of their name in Japanese, but I may be misremembering that.

    • @frogganator3918
      @frogganator3918 Год назад +7

      Also I'm pretty sure watermelons are kinda hard to come by in Japan so it's a pretty big deal just to give one to someone.

      @@zetetsu7169 aren't all things basically either imported or locally grown?
      From what I understand, the reason some fruit is so expensive in Japan is because of this fruit gifting culture, meaning the "top" gift fruits are grown to an insane level of quality.

    About the melon: it's very common in Japan to offer fruits which vary from expensive to be extremely expensive and are considered a luxury (they also take immense care of their fruits to make sure they have a perfect form, a perfect color, a perfect texture etc.)

    It's been about ten years since the first time I watched this show. It never stops getting me emotional. I showed one of my friends the show two years ago (her first time) and we both cried here. This show is very well written and has a way of getting you to empathise with all the characters very deeply. I also love hearing your speculations, the mystery is half the fun of the show!
    Episode 11 was a much needed spot of relative levity after a few very hard episodes in a row culminating with Hughes' death, both for the characters and for the audience. Ed and Al only got a few precious days of levity in their hometown in episode 6 before jumping right into the fray with the Philosophers Stone research, the 5th laboratory, almost getting killed and Al's identiity crisis. This time away, a relatively low stakes trip with their best friend, was something they desperately needed. And even when things did go wrong, they still got the win. After everything, they needed this win. Just a reminder that there's normal people living their normal lives, that they can help, that life moves on and new life is being made every day. It serves to remind the audience a very similar thing too. We just watched a mysterious shadow organisation that seems to have a hand in EVERYTHING kill a character we dearly love, leaving his wife and kid alone. Wherever we turn, they have a hand. Liore. The library. The research lab. And now they reached into the heart of Central Command. This episode gives us a win just as much as it does Ed and Al, and I think it's beautiful and very important.
    It's lovely to see your reactions to the show! Can't wait to see what you think in the future!

    Really looking forward to seeing what you think of Mustang through the rest of the series. Your thoughts on him this episode were really intriguing, and I want to see where you settle with him. Episode 11 is the one that I skip the most in my rewatches. It serves a lot of important needs for the story, but since I know them, it feels more like a filler than pretty much anything else in the story. But that is just my personal feelings on it.

    Death of Hughes and birth of a new life. High highs and low lows. It seems like equivalent exchange to me *wink wink*. But also, we gain something else out of the story as the viewers, which is not just the entertainment, but a great message of how life can only be viewed fully by taking into account both its highs and lows.
