I was a little girl and we had this record. We had a little record player and I would play this song over and over all of the time. It was bitter sweet, I loved Elvis but the song was sad to me too. Memories of long ago.
Now, imagine Elvis at 9 years old, standing on a chair on the stage at the Tupelo Fair singing this song a Capela ! He didn't win first place, some say 5th place, some say 3rd place but he did get some tickets to ride some rides that day. Also, there was a near drowning incident with Elvis as a kid. Then later, his 1st cousin drowned when they were still kids. When you know that his very first performance on stage was at the same fair that he would later perform in 1956 and 1957 it makes it even more special. By the way, when the mayor gave him the check for his performance Elvis endorsed it over to him, told him to buy his childhood home and the 15 acres surrounding it that were for sale and build a park for the kids in East Tupelo. In 1957, he gave that check back to the mayor and told him to build a youth center with a swimming pool. This youth center is currently the museum at the Elvis Presley Birthplace in Tupelo, MS. If you ever get a chance, you should come see it. You will learn so much more about Elvis. Roy Turner, the Executive Director, told me the other day that he tells people that ask why they should come to Tupelo...he says, "going to Graceland and not going to the Tupelo is like going to Jerusalem and not going to Bethlehem." (Not comparing Elvis to Jesus just making an observation) Something to think about. Anyway, you made me laugh really big tonight, so thank you very much. (Judy C. Tupelo Elvis Presley Fan Club) We remember you, Elvis, and we love you...still.
Elvis sang "Old Shep" for the first time in public in 1945 at a contest at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair when he was ten years old, coming in fifth place. He sang it again at his high school talent show as a teenager. It was one of his go-to songs when learning to sing and it's sweet that he recorded it for RCA in 1956 when he was skyrocketig to fame. P.S. I love when you imitate your dad with his accent. You should do a reaction in which you channel your dad the whole way through.
He touches my emotions & heart with all the songs he sings. This one gets me every time 🥲. Such an untouchable talent. ❤ Thanks Ray for another great one! You’re the best.

Yes, I grew up with dogs...2 black Cocker Spaniels (Cokey followed by Cokey 2). As a young adult, my husband gave me a blonde Cocker Spaniel. I kept the pup & got rid of him 2 months later. I named her Kilmeny (from an old Irish poem). She was much better company.😉 In later, more recent years I had Asta, a mixed breed mutt I found behind a dumpster down on a riverbank. She graced me with her love & light for 16 years & I don't think I'll ever get over her loss. Naturally, this song makes me cry, as does any song about dogs. But let's not forget our feline companions. My Tybalt, sweetest, calmest cat ever, once took on a 6'3" 220 lb burly bearded guy he perceived as a threat to me. It didn't turn out well for the guy. That was the only time in Tybalt's 18 years he ever showed any kind of aggression. Over many years of animal rescue I ended up with a little group of handicapped, special needs kitties (born with deformed legs, blindness, deafness, etc) & 3 bunnies. I gave them the longest, happiest lives possible & they rewarded me with love, cuddles, lots of laughs at their playfulness & joyful personalities (despite their problems) & now, wonderful memories. I only mention them because I take every opportunity to tell people that handicapped animals are just as worthwhile & deserving of love & care as "normal" animals & I encourage people to not turn their backs on them if they ever come across one that needs help & a good home if you're able to provide that. Doesn't matter if they look, walk or act different or require a little extra care. They'll love you just as much & give you just as much joy as any other. I'm sorry about what happened to your sweet Hayley. She'll greet you on the other side when the time comes, just like your other loved ones. I believe that wholeheartedly. There will be a lot of furry faces to greet me too..just like the people I've loved, friends & family all.
