In the NBA, the Pop-Duncan led Spurs are the only team that defied the gloomy truth that Costas saw coming in '98. 17 years and counting now. A great closing statement.

you sir, are a prisoner of the moment. Life goes on, there are great players now, nobody in their right mind would dispute that. But I watched almost every game ofJordan, Kobe and Lebrun's career and without malice or prejudice i can easily say that MJ is BY FAR better than both of them,. I could give you a million stats that support my argument but more importantly, I've seen both. The eye test wins every time. I think Leborn might be 3rd or 4th best, Kobe might be close, but i don't need to convince anyone, Watch Jordan in his prime....the tribute videos they made of him while he was still playing (fathom that) and then watch Lebron and you will see the difference. One is brute force, one is pure artistry, you tell me who is who?

Based on what was said, Costas had a feeling that one of the greatest eras in NBA history was indeed over. There wasn't even a sense of "maybe one more year". He knew it was done. Unfortunately, NBC's telecasts of the NBA would be coming to an end in just a few years too.

Lex Tan Bob Costas is by far the most entertaining reflective and moment capturing commentator I have ever heard he was the perfect person to call the 98 playoff run of the Bulls since it was a Bittersweet Run for fans he put that entire playoff run and season in perspective throughout the entire season of covering the NBA on NBC I still watch the games on RUclips to this day just damn good entertainment man there's nothing in the world competing with that today because there's no authentic athletes anymore

He saw the future of how Super Teams would ruin and water down the NBA. Sure the Spurs had their moments and Warriors 2014-19 but they didn't have what Costas said a foe like Stockton and Malone that were HOFers and teammates for over 15 years. Even the Warriors adding Durant take them out of this conversation. NBA Golden era to me was mid-80s to end of 2000 NBA FINALS.

Costas was spot on with his commentary. As far as the Jordan vs Bryant vs James arguments I know this. It’s almost impossible to compare eras. From Bird and Magic’s entry into the NBA until Jordan’s last championship, it was an incredible era. To this day, I’ve never seen such a combination of athleticism, will to win, and charisma that was exhibited by MJ.

I think for about 20 years now, sports pundits have been talking about how there will be no more dynasties and continuity among teams anymore because of free agency and I think it's been overstated. Since 2000...
Lakers won three straight titles from 2000-2002 with Kobe and Shaq, then winning in 2009 and 2010 with Kobe and Gasol
Spurs won frequently with Tim Duncan and Gregg Popovich in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 (a 7-game Finals loss in 2013) and 2014, with the last 4 under the umbrella of Duncan-Parker-Ginobili.
Miami Heat with LeBron-Wade-Bosh got to 4 consecutive NBA Finals between 2011-2014, winning in 2012-13 back to back.
Golden State Warriors with Curry-Thompson-Green may well be on their way to back to back titles in 2015 and 2016 and maybe many more.
The New York Yankees winning titles in 1996, 1998-2000 and one extra one in 2009 with Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera on all those teams.
San Francisco Giants winning World Series in 2010, 2012, 2014, Pablo Sandoval, Tim Lincecum, Madison Bumgarner
Boston Red Sox winning World Series in 2004, 2007, 2013 all with David Ortiz, the first two with Manny and Schilling
New England Patriots winning titles in 2001, 2003, 2004, getting to the Super Bowl in 2007, 2011 and winning another one in 2014 all in the Brady, Belichick era
Detroit Red Wings got cups in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008, just nearly had another one in 2009.
Chicago Blackhawks winning Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013 and 2015 all with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.
So yeah, there's been a lot. Sports isn't dying people.

14 June 1998, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
Well, for Bulls fans, there is of course cause for celebration tonight, after a sixth championship that came harder than the others, but there's some anxiousness mixed in as well. Who knows how all of this will play out, but it's certainly possible that tonight we have seen the last of the Chicago Bulls as we have known them, and whether it ends here or sometime in the near future, it'll be noteworthy not just for the breakup of one of the great teams in sports history, but because given the present structure of pro sports, it may be quite a while before we see anything like this again. All the organizations that have the resources, the Yankees, the Braves, the Cowboys, the Lakers in the NBA, will almost always field contending teams, but the days of continuity may be ending. Even on the best teams, there's now so much turnover, that it's becoming ever-harder to follow and identify with teams. Loyalty has been fragmented. Which brings us to an underappreciated aspect of this golden era in the NBA. It hasn't just been Bird, Magic, and Michael. It was the whole recognizable cast of characters around them that gave the Celtics, the Lakers, and the Bulls their texture, and made following them all the more interesting. Even the Jazz, noble runners-up two years in a row, are personified by the longest-tenured coach in the league, and two hall-of-famers who have been teammates for well over a decade. We'll see championship teams in the future, but will we see teams that endure in this way?
And as for Michael Jordan, all the superlatives have been exhausted and almost all apply, but perhaps the most important one is this: he's authentic. His essence is so much deeper than image, in fact the images is, in his case, an amplification of something true and substantive. Take all the money, all the adulation, all the TV cameras away, and put Michael Jordan in a gym somewhere with Russell and Oscar, West and the Doctor, and he'd be as genuine and as much in his element as any of them, his heart and his athletic integrity every bit as impressive as his artistry. So whenever it ends, it's been an incredible ride for Michael Jordan and the Bulls, and we at NBC have been privileged to be taken along for that ride. So as we say goodnight, we'd like to acknowledge the work of all the people who made these telecasts possible. For everyone at NBC Sports, goodnight, from Salt Lake City

Blame the NBA. Marketing, forced expansion. Money was the motivator when the NBA was created, it's the reason Costas was just up there talking after all. So money and fame is what ruined what could've been a league that fan's still appreciate even in these days. Team's like the Laker's and Celtic's building super team's forced Dwight's trade, Lebron's decision, Chris Paul complaining about his coach etc. People want to win, but putting winning over integrity is why the league isn't as popular.

Every one of their championships won was with a very different cast, with consistent turnover at every position except for quarterback and head coach. When you look at the entirety of the Patriots dynasty, there’s really no clear consistent identity like Costas describes with NBA teams in the 80s and 90s.
