The first episode actually has a whole extra part of the story in it hidden in plain sight. So some things seem odd now, but if you go back and watch this episode again after finishing the show, it gives it a whole other layer! In fact most of the show will have parts that won't make sense till the end, but the journey is so worth it. Can't wait to see more reactions! This is my favorite Chinese drama of all time, and I can't for you to see more.

I'm late to this reaction party. What you said is facts. For me personally, I watch and re-watch any series EP1's more then once just to see if I can catch anything I might have missed. With this series It's such a vivid memory for me. I saw from EP1 there was an over lap of story line and this was back in Sept/Oct of 2019. And I remember from just that one re-watch how everything fell into place the further I got into the series. I binged watch all 50 EP's in two days. I gave myself a break (2wks) and I re-watched this series again but at a slightly slower pace. I've seen this series so many times my husband thinks I speak fluent Chinese. I'm like no baby, I speak fluent Untamed there's a difference. This series is just that good. 😁

For lots of people, this series changed them from "What? 50 ep? That's too much" when they first watched into "Only 50 ep? I can watch 100 more!!!" after they finished watching all ep🤭🤭🤭
PS : Dear Topher, you should react to the ending song. It's called Wuji (Unrestrained) and it was sang by Xiao Zhan (Wei Wuxian/Wei Ying) and Wang Yibo (Lan Wangji/Lan Zhan) It was one of the most beautiful OST I've ever heard.

Throwing in my two cents' worth: 1) it gets less confusing and is worth every moment of confusion and questions, and 2) Xiao Zhan (Wei Wuxian/Wei Ying/Yiling Laozu) and Wang Yibo (Lan Wangji/Lan Zhan/Hanguang-jun) were born to play these two characters and do it absolutely impeccably, and 3) there's an extraordinary trove of behind-the-scenes footage filmed during the making of this, if you find yourself in love with the characters and want more.

"I have questions..." and we will not answer them. No spoilers please. Let Topher discover and enjoy the series at his own pace.
The OST for this series is so beautiful. The leads both sang songs in the OST and they had a duet together. You should check them out as these songs are one of the best there is. They even had an Untamed Concert after the series ended. Also hope after you watch this series you also check out the BTS (behind the scenes) as this has an amazing cast and the chemistry is off the charts especially for the male leads - Xiao Zhan (Wei Wuxian) and Wang Yibo (Lan Zhan). As a background, both XZ and WYB were part of an idol group (XNine for XZ and Uniq for WYB). Both are great singers and dancers. If you are in the mood, check out their song and dance performances. You won't regret it.
Looking forward to more episode RVs. I will relive it all over again (even if I've watched this alot of times already) with you Topher. ♥️

So basically a simplified explanation without a single spoiler, wei wuxian died as a villain, 16 years later he was revived by a young guy named Mo xuanyu to kill the people who wronged him at the cost of his own body, wei wuxian now needs to find everyone that Mo xuanyu wanted him to kill while re encountering the people he loved and hated, Including his highschool sweetheart, from when he was alive and gets to see what happened while he was gone✨ the story gets a lot deeper than that but I know you're going to love it!

Ah, yes. Welcome to the story of Jin Ling's uncles. 🤣
My immediate reaction to the title of this episode was: "Yeaah, good luck getting out, I can't find the exit door."
But honestly I love the emotional whiplash I get from the first episode. I'm going from crying to laughing and back to crying in the span of a few words from a select few characters. They're all too precious.
Wei Ying's outcry of. "It's just a rug with paint! I don't care! I can even paint it better!" - That is not even a lie, he invented the damn thing. He just got involved because he wanted to make sure the kids didn't play with things they didn't know how to play with.
I will say though, your thoughts are very interesting. Especially the 'trustfall off the cliff'.

  • @littlefatpanda7124
    @littlefatpanda7124 Год назад +155

To explain episode 1 (and 2), I'll give you context without spoilers: (some things that wont' be answered by the series itself)
First thing you should know: cultivators are passionate investigators and exterminators of the evil things hahahaha, in my words, obviously. That's their job and they love to do it, because being able to be a good cultivator is a privilege. Wei Wuxian, our protagonist, is an enthusiast of the evil things and he is really good at what he does, he's veeery observant. That's the first thing, ok? Hahahah.
Basically, what happens here in these 2 episodes is: Wei Wuxian/Wei Ying/Yiling Patriarch really died 16 years ago but Mo Xuanyu (at first, just a random "crazy" dude who happens to be a bastard child of a famous clan in the story) does a spell to bring him back in exchange for himself (they didn't know each other). Basically, Mo Xuanyu dies so that Wei Wuxian's soul comes back and lives in his place. In the books, Wei Wuxian literally takes over his body, so he looks like Mo Xuanyu, but in the series, Wei Wuxian looks the same way he did 16 years ago, so the explanation here is basically Mo Xuanyu soul and body disappear while Wei Wuxian's soul and body was brought back in his place.
Mo Xuanyu was bullied his entire life by the Mo family, his uncle, aunt, cousin and the cousin's servant (and someone else in the series that represents the last scar, that we will find out eventually); it was so bad he was locked up and became a "lunatic", so all he wanted was revenge, even tho he would die for it. The ritual was to bring back an evil ghoul to avenge him and although Wei Wuxian wasn't a ghoul ahahhaha, he died a villain, he was really famous for being a villain to a whole society, being the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, using evil tricks and causing deaths of thousands of people, that's why Mo Xuanyu chose his spirit to take over and avenge him. I mean, if The Yiling Patriarch was that evil as people say, it wouldn't be a problem for him to kill just four (five in the series) people, right? Hahahaha. Also, there's the plus with that ritual, the scars are just a representation of his spell task - every scar represents a person he wants revenge against -, if Wei Wuxian doesn't complete it, not only he dies again but his soul would be shattered, to never be reencarnated again. Basically, this ritual/spell is very dark because it takes the caster's life and not many people would do it, it traps a spirit in your body (obviously in the series that's changed, it's 2 different bodies) that is obligated to do the caster's task.
For me, the most confusing thing was: why was he joking around and acting like that? Well, Wei Wuxian is very observant and he understood exactly who Mo Xuanyu would want revenge against just based on how they treated him. But Mo Xuanyu forgot the part of the spell where he leaves exact intructions of what the revenge actually is, so Wei Wuxian has to guess. Instead of jjust killing them, he tried to humlliate them at first, because maybe that was enough but the scars where still in his body so he realized he had to do more than bully the bullies, but to actually kill them. Since the flag the lures spirits is what lured this spirit exactly where the Mo Family was - and the flag was made by Wei Wuxian -, he basically inderectly killed them, which made the scars - except for one - disappear. So he goes for a journey of 2 things: 1) being back alive getting to cultivate as he wants without anyone knowing he's Wei Wuxian, because that's what he loves doing as all cultivators and 2) trying to figure out who the last person/scar is, before the spell kills him for good. The whole initial plot is more simple than it looks at first watch.
So everything that happens before we get to the flashckback in ep 2 is just Wei Wuxian pretending to be Mo Xuanyu as he finishes the task of the spell (to take revenge for Xuanyu) - so he could stay living in Mo Xuanyu's place - and suddently bumps into people he used to know back when he was first alive.
Hope I helped! And thank you again

      Couldn't say better^^
Also, just to add on some names and honorifics.
Ancient Chinese people usually have two names. One is the name their parents gave them when they were born, and the other is the name they gave when they're coming of age.
For example, Wei Wuxian's birth name is Wei Ying. Wei Wuxian is the name he got when he's coming of age.
Or Lan Wangji, his birth name is Lan Zhan. Lan Wangji is the name he got after he's coming of age.
Note : The birth name is usually only used by people who are extremely close or family members.
Second, in the term of honorifics. Some translation here are a little bit messed up. For example, when Lan Jingyi and other Lan's disciples calling "Han Guang Jun" it's translated into "Second Childe Lan" when the actual meaning is (lit.)"Light Bearing Lord"
Han Guang Jun is Lan Wangji's honorific title. It was given to him because of his clean reputation in fighting evil spirits.
It's the same as "Yiling Patriarch/Yiling Laozu" is...somewhat an honorific name given to Wei Wuxian because of his reputation.
Tried my best to not give spoilers here. So if you guys think this contain spoiler please do tell me^^

Watching you watch the first episode reminds me of how frustrated and confused I was when I watched it the first time. I almost gave up on the series. I kept going because many said it would get interesting around episode 13.
The moment I was done with the series, I immediately rewinded it to the beginning to watch it all over again. That's the beauty of MXTX's stories. They were written to be rewatched/reread many times over. The first round may be confusing and slow. But when we learned about how much the characters mean to each other and how important those reunions are in the earlier episodes, and, when we see how intense their journeys are and how much changed in such a short amount of time, it makes us want to immediately go back to the beginning to compare the ending to the beginning and re-experience those reunions with new perspectives.
Another thing about MXTX's stories is that this author delivers her promises. That dramatic opening scene at the cliff was a promise that this would be an emotionally intense story filled with painful relationships. I remember when I saw that scene, I rolled my eyes. I have seen many dramas in which it promised similar things, but failed to deliver. Initially, i expected the same for The Untamed. Boy, was I wrong. The author MXTX delivers every promise in all her stories, and this is why she is forever my favorite author.

Things slowly come together. Totally avoid spoilers, too!! Every single character is just so incredible and lovable (especially once you get through the series and can put yourself in their shoes to know WHY they act a certain way). Not to mention the "crack" videos fans made after this series were HILARIOUS and edits were so good to the point of being painful once you know the story, but I suggest avoiding those for now until you know everything bc spoilers.

The thing with this drama is that the more you watch it the better it gets. the first time I watched it I loved it but I was so confused. The second time it all made sense and I loved it even more and now I've watched it over 6 times. There is also a special edition where there are 20 episodes, that one has a happier ending. This one has an open end to the story. When I first saw this u thought 50 eps was too much but after I finished it I wanted moreee. This series is based on a novel called Mo Dao Zu Shi by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. I read the novel, manhua(ongoing), and watched the donghua (has two seasons). Mo Xiang Tong Xiu also has other well-known BLs like Heaven official's blessings and Scum Villain Self Saving System. For now, both have donghuas and novels. Heaven official's blessings have a manhua and the live-action is currently being filmed. It will probably come out next year, it was announced last year. Btw the novels were originally in chinsese but official english translations started coming out last year (there are physical books now)

You are bringing me back my memories. I have read this MDZS novel, manhwa, animation, and drama. Each version is so beautiful. If u think about 50 episodes is long. In the end, you will want season 2. This is my first bl genre drama. ever since then, I can't get over this drama and most of us fans. i will help you everything keeping up the information. But I'm really happy u r reacting to these. Just remember the little details of this drama are so beautiful. My fave episodes are 6,12,27,35,36,43,44,45,46. (Put some tissues next to you cause this drama will surely pleasurably and painfully kill you with its emotion).
the thing is Yilling Laozu, Killed 3000+ ones in Nightless city with his sister and her husband abandoning their sister's child. and the guy in the purple is brother Jiang Cheng. the guy in the white robe I will not tell u now.
6:52 No. This drama doesn't tell you what happened to his body. but if I recall after he jumped off the cliff his soul, body parts, and core were torn and scattered apart. so they didn't find any sign of him.
the ritual Mo Xuanwu did is sacrifice his body with the ill intention that Yilling Laozu will take his revenge. That's why he has cuts on his forearm.
I will provide the back story of Mo Xuanwu with the novel's help if I think u get enough context of mo Xuanwu in the drama. So I will not spoil anything.
Just remember Each of the characters has 3 names, especially the main ones. One is a birth name, One is a coming-of-age name, and another one is the title. Just remember in this world No men and women can't call each other by their birth names, they have to call them by their coming-of-age names and if get a grasp of that you will cry at some point in this episode. And if one is senior to the other they have to call them by their titles. I will just tell you now the three names of the main leads.
    Black and red robe boy:
    Birth name: Wei Ying
    Comin-of-age Name: Wei Wuxian
Title: Yilling Laozu ( Yilling Patriach)
    White and Blue robe:
    Birth Name: Lan Zhan
Coming of age mane: Lan Wangji
    Title: Hanguangjun (Light-bearing lord)
P.s. I am not fluent in English and it is not my first language so I hope I was able to help you with a little understanding of the first episode and not spoil it for u and everyone in the comment. But if have any questions just ask me here and I will try to answer your doubts.

This series it's definitely in my top 3, btw (NOT a spoiler), it is not mentioned in the series because of the censors, but one of the reasons why Mo Xuan Yu sacrifices himself is because he suffered bullying for being gay and people saw it as a mental illness, that's why they called him "Phsyco" or her mom saying that he was not "normal"

This is one of my favorites! There is a lot going on in the background that you might not pick up on until the end, but the framework is brilliant. If you enjoy the show, you'll love the Novel. The original story IS a romance. The official English version is actual available now. There are 5 books. Parts 1-4 have been released and part 5 will be released soon.

Lots of people can get put off by the first episode.....and it's simply because it oddly starts in the middle. Especially with all the stuff about Mo Xaunyu bringing Wei Ying back to life not being fully explained in episode 1.
Basically at the start of episode 1 we see Lan Zhan (the guy in the headband) trying to save Wei Ying from falling off the cliff, but Wei Ying dies anyway. The why's and explanations are given in the first half of the show as we get to that point but by this time Wei Ying has become the no1 evil in the cultivation world.
The next scene, at Mo Manor, actually happens 16 years later when Wei Ying has been dead 16 years. Mo Xuanyu is a mad man who has bought nothing but shame to his family which is why no one likes him, and performs some kind of spell/rite to bring back Wei Ying back, but Wei Ying comes back in Mo Xuanyu's body (which is kinda skipped over in the show as Xiao Zhan plays both).
The rest of episode 1 shows what the world is like (including some characters we don't see until the second half of the show after episode 2 as they are juniors to our main leads). episode 2 continues the 16 years later idea, until Lan Zhan and Wei Ying finally meet up, at this point we jump backwards in time to before the two main leads met.........roughly 20 years in the past............that is the last time you have and from then it follows the normal timestream of how the two met, the adventures, etc.
It is a bit complicated at the start and can put people off but it is well worth watching and a lot of people actually want more episodes not less.

The Untamed was my drama withdrawal from one of the famous series "Guardian" (adapted from a BL Novel) while Thai series "Until We Meet Again" was my drama withdrawal from The Untamed & which is also the first BL series i've watched with intimate scenes. I also read the novel of this 3 series simultaneously while watching each series, well except for Guardian since i've watched it months after the series ended then read the novel after while The Untamed & Until We Meet Again i've watched it in real-time. This 6 pair's friendship is admirable too off-cam that's why i still haven't watch any series, film(s) or project(s) of them that the pair not together. Have fun watching & hope the slow progress or pacing of WeiLan's (Wei Ying x Lan Zhan) moment won't bore you. 😁

TOPHER!!!! I can not believe you are finally here. This is my favourite story ever. Not my fave drama, not my fave xianxia, not my fave Chinese show, my favourite story in all of stories. I have entangled myself with every incarnation. This watch-through of the series will be my eighth. Have also seen the donghua (anime) and the Q version (chibis), listened to the audio drama in Chinese. Watched the donghua and listened to the audio drama in Japanese. Read the book in Italian and English. (Don’t like simplified hanzi, so it is highly unlikely I will ever attempt the Chinese, but who knows? I am clearly completely obsessed. ) I am not the type to go off on people because their opinion of art is different from mine, so no worries there. But I just thought I should warn folks that I lose all my composure around The Untamed and I am about to devolved into THE SCREAMIEST FANGURL. I have never even asked for this reaction because I do not own an ounce of moderation when it comes to this story and I did not need to get arrested for stalking Topher trynna convince him to react. Lol.
Anyhow, here is a random comparison that nobody asked for…
    What each incarnation does best…
The Untamed drama - wins for character development. I really love that I can rewatch and still wonder if this character really means this thing. They are ambiguous in a good way. The live action drama also has the most solid story to me. You can find new aspects on every rewatch.
Mo Dao Zu Shi book - obviously, with the censorship issue, this is the best love story and has the spiciest scenes. Reading the book made me wish some one in Taiwan would buy the rights to Chinese BL. Could you imagine these stories with Taiwanese kisses???
Mo Dao Zu Shi audio drama - the action scenes are amazing. I feel like I could just run up on a super villain ever time I listen.
Mo Dao Zu Shi donghua - I am the least visual person I know, but even I can appreciate that it is pretty as hell. I love the way they do the arrays. ( Arrays are the markings we saw on the ground in this episode when Wei Wuxian woke up in Mo Xuanyu’s body.) Also, do the censorship police not watch animation? because they say some things outright in the anime that I can not imagine would get through.
Mo Dao Zu Shi Q - absolutely no plot, but the cutest, sweetest funniest little skits based in our MDZS world.

my advice is to push through the first 2-3 episodes. It can be confusing with all the names and the terminology of Wuxia-World and the time jumps but later as you keep watching it will clear and the narrative will get linear.
I need to warn you; this series has a very high addiction potential. The script is well written. The story and the characters grow up on you with the time and you will love them or hate them with passion. The main leads Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan are attractive. The rest of the cast is also good looking. It's very enjoyable.

I was so excited to see this pop up! Untamed is just one of my favorite things ever. I love the story a lot, but it's the characters that keep me obsessed. I just adore so many of them. Not always because they're nice or good, but because they're deep and complex.
The first couple of episodes are especially confusing because it's so in media res, but it settles pretty quickly. The biggest problem is probably going to be keeping track of names because most of the major characters have between 2 or 3. It goes birth name --> courtesy name --> honorable(or dishonorable) title. So, you'll have Wei Ying --> Wei Wuxian --> Yiling Patriarch. It took me WAY too long to figure out who some of the characters were my first time through.
Another thing you'll have to get used to is the fact that they will just end an episode in the middle of a conversation. Sometimes the middle of a sentence. They had 50 episodes and they were going to use every minute they had to cram everything they could in there, even if it meant cutting the episodes up in weird places, lol.
