"Return to sender... address unknown...no such number..no such door" is preceded by "Dana, oh Dana I am writing to you - I heard YOU passed away, it was a beautiful day..." - Even though the man has heard of Dana's dead he still writes a letter to his long lost Love of Life, but she does not live there anymore, because of her death. The song is not a Stalker song, it is a song of a man who experienced his Love of Life on younger ages, but she broke the relationship and moved on in her life, but he cannot forget her and keeps on writing the letters to her to "work on his sorrow or loss" - a very beautiful song!
I think that giving your first time interpretation is really cool and it's the whole point of reacting. As you told, most of us have listened to these songs many times and some of us also searched for back stories, but that's not why we are here. We are here to see what the first listen of a song communicates to you, and it's always cool, so keep up the good work and don't be afraid to interpretate what you see!

what is special about the acoustic versions of sonata is that they really rearrange and adapt their songs, hence the decision to make 2 whole albums acoustic versions, including the tour

Have a few reactions recorded for the coming week.
I can remember talking to Tony like 10 years ago after a concert just about this song Letter to Dana. And its not a song about stalking, but a song about critizising catholicism (according to him although he didnt tell me much more so the rest is my interpretation on that information of him). The Name Dana O'Hara isn't chosen randomly its a very old irish name from the catholic part of Ireland. As he sings she left her family. The reason was probably the harsh traditional catholic way of living back then and maybe her father being a violent to her as living up to that patriarch role model in old catholic church. On the fathers death he refers to as a beautiful day (instead of rainy like it was for her mothers day of death), because he knew about the bad things he did and he was kinda glad that he ist gone, hoping she then could return because she is safe. He (the letter writer also catholic) is shocked about seeing her on a filhty magazine, like nude magazines or something like that. He just cant take that because of his believe. That "sin" is also the reason why her father disowned her. That kind of catholic thinking is later shown as he refers again to sinning with his lie he is telling. The fact he refers to a beautiful day on her death could have many meanings. He could be happy that he doesnt need to suffer anymore from missing her, since he knows she cant come back now. It could be also possible that he is happy for her that her suffering she had with her father and maybe other things in live will come to an end now because she died and therefore goes to heaven. You could wonder why he thinks she goes to heaven although she sinned, thats because the harsh catholic rules were softened over all the years and nowadays you always go to heaven as long as you chose to go there no matter what you did (thats at least current catholic dogma although some people doesnt want to accept that). And since she goes to heaven and he also feels that time will come for him he ist happy since they will reunite in heaven pretty soon.
Well thats my take on that specific song and I am sorry for my interpunctation and aweful english but I hope you get my point x) Thanks for reacting to all their songs :)

It is supposed to be the story of a stalker. You'd have to listen to "the end of this chapter" to get some context too 👀. The studio version sounds very dark, but the live version is also simply a gem 👌🏻

I think ”Letter to Dana” is about small town boy and girl, possibly a chidhood friends, or a teenage crush, but this girl left this town and this boy stayed there, waiting her to come back. Eventually he got bitter, and dissapointed. Apparently Dana didn’t come back even to her own parents funeral. Still, this man was never able to shake her of his mind.
Sonata Arctica’s songs are often dramatic and sometimes those are exposing the dark side of the characters. They have actually made psychological thriller kind of dark story about a guy who is a messed up stalker and more. It is known as ”Caleb saga”. It is now a 7 songs series. They have released it, by adding one more song to the saga, during the almost 20 years. Nobody knows, is there going to more to the series. Latest addition to the saga, came this year and supprisingly it was fitting as the first or the second song of this saga. Caleb saga songs are always a bit different than most of the other songs. It’s amazing storytelling, and lyrics forms a lot of shivering images and even emotions. Definately worth to check. You can start with the song ”Caleb” or ”Dark Empath”.

I enjoyed this 😊 many interpretations of what the story is and I don't think Tony has confirmed or denied any, but they are definitively connected and it's one part of an entire stalker series. They also have a long list of songs that has been confirmed and Tony enjoys a lot putting easter eggs adding to the "caleb saga". It's not a song title, but many songs that are connected. If you want, I can try to put them chronologically as a request later, but it's a lot and not a single site that lists them as far as I know.
My take on this though is, as another post I saw that I agree on; Letter to Dana, Shy and Mary Lou are one story: Dana is first love of this guy. But he let her go/she wanted to and did find someone else (Now I know someone else's holding you). This guy (tries to) moves on, but Dana is still dear to him, he writes all these letters through years. After Dana left, years pass and he frequently visits this diner Citylite. There is this new waitress who reminds him of Dana (You can't be acting like my Dana). But he is shy and/or mentally broken because of Dana, he does nothing. This waitress is Mary-Lou (A Job as a waitress she sure was to find). So, she actually found a job, for a short while, from this Citylite diner. Anyhow, she had a boyfriend who got her pregnant, she had to quit her job but thought they will be fine, but he leaves her and finds someone else (He promised the moon, but won´t marry you. Nothing to do and eating for two, he´s goin' out with someone new). So in the end they are both alone, Shy and Mary-Lou.
I also think "unopened" is from Dana's perspective receiving tons of letters from a stalker that she never opens. Haven't requested that one yet.
Tony is a great storyteller and he intentionally writes songs that may or may not be connected and leaves it up to us to decide.
The studio version of Shy is one of my favourite Sonata songs.. maybe I'm a closet stalker 👀
