  • A government minister has confirmed that consumers "won't be buying energy directly" from Labour's new GB Energy body.
    Speaking to Sophy Ridge on Sky's Politics Hub show, energy minister Sarah Jones said "a whole different set of companies" will remain responsible for selling energy to households, while GB Energy will be "in the business of generating the energy in the first place".
    Ms Jones added that the body will also study the seabed around the UK - which is owned by the Crown - to provide information for wind farms and the companies that will build them.

      Ah but the £35 a month standing charge pays for green energy which is vastly more expensive than gas.

      Maybe not scrap the standing charge all together but at least half it and put the unit price up instead. This would insensitivise people to actually reduce their consumption.

      Yep, that’s how the King gets money from offshore wind but only 10% as 90% goes back to the state, recall the refused the money under Sunak but Sunak would not let him and the king is putting the money into home building and green energy. Also remember that the more money the state makes the less taxes we need to pay and with offshore wind if we overproduce we can see to Europe. Big picture, this is a solution.

    Its just not gonna make bills any cheaper though is it

    • @pipoo1
      @pipoo1 2 месяца назад +3

      Not immediately but eventually it will significantly reduce bills. At present burning Gas is the most expensive means of generating electricity and 60% of UK electricity is generated by burning gas. In addition our entire consumer market is regulated in favour of the highest cost producer, again gas. To put into perspective electricity generated from offshore wind is 60% cheaper than gas, and onshore wind is 75% cheaper. In short, of the Tory Government hadn’t put a stop to virtually all green electricity projects ten years ago we’d be far further ahead now and we’d have been a lot better insulated to the massive surge in gas costs when Putin invaded Ukraine. That’s ultimately what GB Energy is about, energy security.

      Ok electricity from offshore wind is 60% cheaper than that from burning gas. Onshore wind is 75% cheaper. At present 60% of our electricity comes from burning gas, a highly price volatile input cost, and the entire consumer electricity market is currently regulated to favour the highest cost producer, again gas. What GB Energy will eventually do is flood the supply market with cheaper green electricity reduce our dependence on gas and lead to significantly cheaper bills. Also closing the gap between what we use and what we generate will leave us less vulnerable to the likes of France, whom we currently import electricity from inflating prices at key surge time during winter.

  • @DaveAppleton

    We've already reduced our emissions by more than most countries in the world. If Labour are really doing this to save the planet it would be much cheaper and actually benefit the planet considerably more for us to help developing countries that will continue to burn fossil fuels for many many decades to transition away from them. Cars in the UK are naturally going electric as battery tech improves and gets cheaper to produce, there's no need to spend money forcing the issue. The fact we are going to spend 8b try to get industry to build wind farms is ridiculous, what if they say "no thanks". We should be partnering with industry not the land(seabead) owner.

    • @vylbird8014
      @vylbird8014 Месяц назад

      Hydrogen has plenty of problems that might be hard to engineer away. It's hard to make in a way that is both economical and sustainable. It's also quite dangerous, so handling it requires a lot of safety precautions that raise the cost greatly. A leaky seal on your hydrogen car means your garage explodes, so it requires a leak monitoring and alarm system.

Firstly is the Time it will take to build these things and upgrade the Cables and Grid maybe up to 20 Years. 2nd Well they will Generate the Power then sell it to a Energy Company. Thats Exactly the Problem we have now lmao. Then we have The Cost to build all this. Who is Paying For It. The Magic Money Tree or The People.

    I'm not sure but I do remember taking a module back in uni about market research. Shouldn't energy companies be asked those questions and given those ideas before starting to invest and build GB Energy? I mean what if it is not a good idea for energy companies? What if it doesn't generate a lot of money for them? Why don't they do it themselves? This doesn't make sense at all, smells funny!
