Great tutorial as ever Maxx. Here's some Pro tips to make them look awesome. You are right as always brown pants, rare as rocking horse poo... Use fabric dye and tie dye them. It adds depth and flavour. Also similar to what you said about using the pocket as a patch. Don't be afraid to just run lines of stitching xxXxxx style, messy is good. When I did my tunic in your style I used a thick embroidery thread in a different color. It works so well.
When using a rope belt, there's a really handy way some Franciscan monks seems to tie theirs. Double up the rope, tie a Lark's head knot on the folded end, wrap the rope around yourself, and then feed the loose ends through that knot. Once you get it cinched down nicely, you've got a belt you can adjust just by sliding it to the desired tightness, and it holds really secure. I actually tie all my regular drawstring pants in this way too. Crazy convenient. If you go the ring belt route using the belt with the snaps, be sure to stress test your gear a little. I decided to use a double ring format, and both rings were too much, causing the snaps to pop loose really easily. I ended up having to replace the snaps with permanent rivets. The rivets and tool are cheap and easy to use, if you've got a tandy leather in town. Otherwise, you can just reinforce the tab on the belt by wrapping it with some strong, thin cord.
Yeah, this basic set up is perfect for a one shot thing, or a a ren faire and stuff like that. Use my tunic tutorial and this pants/belt tutorial, wear some canvas shoes or something if you have them and you are all set!
I've been doing research because I wanted to dress as one of my dnd characters for Halloween & I come across Larp and I'm absolutely in love!! You've got great videos!!
Its funny, i just made a pair of pants for larp. what i did is buy 3 sizes up and folded over the band twice in the front and twice in the back. It gave them a nice pucker, and they fit perfectly. And by the way if you get womens oversized leggings the lower leg is already smaller.
There is these really cool hiking pants .. look like sweat pants .. but they are like durable.. stretchy pants.. I would totally wear those for larp .. they fit slim though so they got this shrek vibe going on haha .. throw a jerkin, and some boots and you got a shrek thing going on
Just so you know plaid would have been a normal textile pattern depending on what your going for, early medieval period or late roman iron age celtic and germanic peoples would have worn plaid patterned trousers quite often. The material is just as important as the color or pattern though, anything like shiny nylon or fleece is going to ruin the look no matter what color it is. Cotton flannel you can get away with if it's done right as from at distance it can have a wool felt look to it.

And would have been produce with different plants, minerals ect. For example blue was created with indigo, purple with a type of limpid, and yellow from oaker. Research period clothes like the bogman i made a norse tunic based on the very well preserved tunic he was found in
I'm a little confused, early on he said not to use pajama pants off the shelf, but then all he does is roll them up in the final bit where he shows the outfit? Was that just a weird way to say don't use patterns?
I'm sure there's a lot more you can do if you want to punch them up a bit. It depends on where you're going and what look you're trying to get, but you can roll them over on top and make a rope belt, run large X shape stitches up the side seams with a different colored thread. The best thing to do is find an image and make your pants look like that. If you're really wanting a medieval look, you'll have to just get a pair from somewhere online probably. But in a pinch tucking them in your boots, is better than nothing, probably.
I'm thinking of grabbing leggings for an Asian inspired character (raised in the equivalent of Asia of my setting). Other than color and not having any fancy things on them do you have any advice to give on what I should look out for or how I can make them look more immersive? (my character is somewhat like an elf, he takes care of his appearance and tries to keep his clothes as in tact as possible)
The only advice I can give is that generally speaking clothing was baggy. To make some leggings, you'd need to do serious cutting and alteration on a pair of pants to get them looking period, and you'd still need something to wear under the leggings. Essentially you'd be making pants into something like chaps. So, the middle cut out and just the legs intact, and then tied to a belt or gambeson or something like that. If you take a shot, let me know how it turns out... Worst case scenario, scan wish or eBay for Samurai Pants or Fishing Pants and see if you can snag a pair cheaply.
I played a computer game a very long time ago, where your character could wear anything they found. I had a very powerful skirt and this like massive upperbody armor and I just said, I don't care, I'm wearing both and I thought it looked very cool on my character in the game, so in real life for many, many years, I wore a similar costume to larp.
@@LarpMix That's rad as hell. And I love the phrase "powerful skirt". I can easily envision it. I'm a trans guy, so I struggle with wanting to be safe and "masculine" vs "feminine" and experimental. But I have a love for fashion and a frustration with gender norms, so I recently got the courage to wear skirts in public again. And not a single person bothered me about it. I hope this is the way it becomes for everyone.

You could splice the ring on to the rope. Videos or ask a Boy Scout. Cut three extra long lengths and do a flare braid. Rope belts were very common.

the problem is that most modern pj plaid is way to tight of a pattern, you need a large spread out plaid or it looks terrible.

It's just a 2 inch ring. If you look at 11:35 in the video, there's a close up of it. You can probably get it online somewhere also.
