In this video, we harness the power of this cool little MacBook from 2006. Yeah, it's old and crappy, but hey, you can still do surprising number of things on it. Heck, I wrote this video description on it (after editing and uploading it as well!)

Dude, you rock. I like how you're working on all of these old macs. I was in university when that one came out. I really wanted one, but saw how my friends' would get really greasy. REALLY greasy. Anyway, isn't it fun being old and being able to afford all of the shit that we wanted in the past? Feels like in terms of user functionality, not much has changed, except for speed and power efficiency. I guess those two are pretty big..... nevermind. Let's just retro-trip, and have a good time!

Ah yes, a pure black Macbook. Seen a few of these in coffee shops growing up.
White ones often turn piss-yellow. These ones seem to hold their shape a bit better.

@@farasey yeah, they are bit less common than the white ones. I only have one black one, and like 4 white models.
it's a small thing, but the slot-loading optical drives on this era of apple laptop sound so amazing to me. i have an ibook g4, and putting in a cd is just so crunchy and clunky, it's extremely satisfying.
Oh yeah, those are a joy to use, at least until they break or stop reading discs. I guess they are easy enough to replace thougc

lol. Seriously though. I had one of these black MacBooks. A friend found it in her apartment dumpster and asked if I could fix it up for her. I did, but it wasn’t quite what she wanted (it was for her daughter but she wanted an Air). So I got the keep it and use it. It was a nice machine. I love these old MacBooks. Also I played Cod 2 on this MacBook as well.
It’s a deluxe edition, has both games inside the box 🤷♂️
I plan on getting a 2013 but i found a better deal on limundo on a 2015 macbook air. the old macbooks are such beasts! keep it up.

I guess for 1080p video the real cut-off point is whether the machine has hardware h264 codec. And the same can be said for watching RUclips, since for now yt still uses h264 as a fallback up to 1080p.
@@fbelard Well, it plays and edits 1080p footage just fine locally, doesn’t play it on YT though. I mean, you get frames here and there, but it really doesn’t even do 720p well.

I'll agree that these kinds of machines hold up well. I have a Acer laptop with a i5 560m and I can use it with a modern Linux distro. Heck stuff like supertux runs, I can get ~24-30fps in minetest and i can play retro games on retroarch fairly well.
Pffft, i5 isn’t even retro as far as I’m concerned 😂 Even the first gen! Nah, just kidding, but no, it’s still very, very usable.

I had that model. It actually can go up to 6Go of ram. I did it.
@@SteveAaron I’ve tried with 4+2 GB, since I do have a 4 gig module, but it would only ever report 4 gigs. And I’ve also read it’s only able to use 3,3 gigs, since that’s the architecture bottleneck.
I use a MacBook air 2016 11" for video editing and it does a good job

@@turkeyleg72 My wife too still uses a 2011 MacBook Air 11”. Works fine for pretty much everything she does.
IMO for 99% of creators there is no reason to buy the latest newest hardware. Just wait. I'm typing this on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. It works fine for everything I could possibly need it for in 2025.

Those people are idiots, the only edits one really needs are straight cuts. Titles and separators can be made in other ways. e.g., with image editors, heck, even pen and paper. For everything else the original Movie Maker will do. Not the XP one, the basic Windows 2000 one. Let alone 2006 iMovie. The only thing fancy transitions etc do is make the project look *more* amateurish. I'm pretty sure that Leopard iMovie even does f*ing greenscreen. You could cut a feature film on it. 99% of the best movies ever were cut with blades and tape, so there. It's color grading, audio and other post production that need specialized tools, but that stuff always needed specialized tools (and specialized technicians) anyway.
I forgot the main point: this "deliberate limitations" series of yours looks great and the videos flow really well. I guess they're just well scripted, they're insightful and fun to watch. I'm here for it all the way!
@@fbelard man, thanks so much for your awesome feedback! I’m with you 100%, but at the same time I do realise people who are into modern content have different expectations from it, not just editing, but the overall style, just judging from all the shorts and TikTok and stuff.
@@schvabek you're welcome! yeah but I'm pretty sure if you're clever you can fool them into thinking the project was made with modern tools. it's just a matter of understanding the limitations and letting loose inside them, same as it ever was with any art form.
those people are probably talking about using technology and art as "automatic gimme attention and money machine ooga booga". and for that, sure I guesss, but if that's the case I couldn't care less really.
How where you able to sign in to appleid/icloud? I also went back to Mountain Lion, but gives me a connection failed.
ICloud didn't exist in Mac OS X 10.6
