It’s one of the few popular songs with a super simple groove that I can’t really imagine sounding better with a more complex groove. The simplicity of the groove does more for the song than any other song I’ve heard with this groove.

I was taught 4/4 timing. So the snare hits are on two and 4. But the snare hits on every 3 hits makes sense as well, it's just you're not throwing in the " 1 and 2 and 3 and 4." It's just straight hits.
It's the same beat just taught differently.

You guys remember that guy who called this the “Apple 1 orange 1” and then got absolutely destroyed in his comment by angry drummers. Thank god we have a real actual good tutorial for the quarter note rock beat.

      Thanks!
But calling that person an idiot is a bit harsh. Yes, I don't fully agree with the "apple 1 orange 1"-method enirely, however - it is a fantastic way if you're teaching toddlers.
Everyone is different, and some kids might respond better to words instead of numbers, because they can associate a color and shape to counting instead just a number.
      But thanks anyway! ^_^

Funny enough my first one was a swing beat my second was a 16th rock beat and this one was my 4th.
