This week Schony747 rides the very last V/Line Passenger H Car locomotive hauled passenger train. Come for a ride and enjoy a piece of history!
The H car dates back to the mid 1980s when the first car was delivered in 1984. The cars were rebuilt from the Harris suburban electric cars that dates back to the 1950s! The last service was the train to Waurn Ponds and there's a story behind the train that you will see in the video.

Some of those carriages are pushing 70 years old (they were introduced for the Melbourne Olympics). When I was a kid the horrible old BPL carriages were being phased out, people said BPL stood for "Bouncing Passenger Lounge". No one cried when they finally went and I doubt anyone will mourn the passing of Harris carriages which are almost as bad.

People are mourning the passing but it will be old news in a few weeks

It's very interesting. Those Haris carriages made those characteristic moans, creaks, and groans when they were suburban trains. Furthermore, the last models of the Haris trains had closing doors, and I distinctly recall one having built in 1970. I reckon the last ones were built in that year. Anyway, I hope some are kept for a blue Haris train restoration. The very last models also had the futuristic seats of the Hitachi's. I was a kid in the 70s, remember it vividly.

I don't remember the Harris as they were gone when I moved here. The creaks and groans haven't changed by the sound of it

I liked the Harris trains when they were around. My experience is only from 1981 onwards but I always found them open and airy with a hint of the 1950s in the interior finishes. I like that the spacing of the two centre windows on each side of the H sets gives away the original position of the third set of doors when they were in suburban use. Thanks for the video 😊

I'm honestly disappointed I never got to ride in one of these carriages, I've only ever been in an N set. So I can't comment on what it's like to be in one, or how good/bad they were but it's definitely sad to see them go.

From the one time I got to ride one, I can say the seats felt basically identical to the N-sets, with a nice and smooth ride, my only complaint would be the lack of access to a toilet for 1/3 of all carriages in the train! (And the undrinkable "drinking water" that looked kinda funky...)
All in all, I'd say they're about on-par with the Velocities, slower and without inter-car access, but a smoother ride, more comfortable seating, large luggage and pram spaces, and wider doorways allowing fast boarding and alighting, which when combined with a decent express pattern kept them to a good pace.

Quite a pity I didn’t ride the Hs the whole way from Melb to Bacchus Marsh, and the Geelong services.
Only as far as Caroline Springs.
