  • Clive Bowen is without equal in Britain as a maker of slipware. Now approaching his sixtieth year as a potter, this exhibition will be his 5th major show at Goldmark. His pots are collected and used worldwide. www.goldmarkart.com/
Bowen was born in Cardiff and studied painting at Cardiff College of Art. In 1965 he joined Michael Leach as an apprentice, later joining Michael Cardew at Wenford Bridge in 1970. He established his own pottery in Devon in 1971. Bowen uses red earthenware for his pots which range from large storage jars to smaller domestic items. In the tradition of English slipware, he decorates his work with contrasting slips that are trailed and combed, and incorporate sgraffito techniques that give his pieces energy and confidence.

So grateful for each film and how you share not only the art, but delve into what drives each artist to create. You capture the essence of what drives these amazing people. This film today has brightened my day here in rainy British Columbia Canada.

Thanks, it's going to be a wonderful exhibition. Thanks for the preview.
Lucky you growing up in a household where artists would drop by for meals. Sounds like a movie!

Fabulous work, the colours, flow and creative skill are magical. Tell me why on earth would you randomly stick white sticky labels on the work?? You are art gallery not a stall in a market - just saying.

Thanks for your comment. We do consider ourselves to be shopkeepers, so much closer to your 'stall in a market' idea than you might think. The reason we put labels on the pots rather than beside the pot on the plinth is primarily a logistical one. Our solo exhibitions feature between 200 and 300 pots. During an exhibition, especially the opening few days, we have a large number of visitors and tend to sell the work very quickly. In order for our visitors to experience a full and vibrant show, we replace all of the sold pots immediately with unsold ones. If the pots themselves had no identifying number we would soon get into a pickle! I hope that answers your question.
