Good afternoon, Steve, I am been told to stay away from the new translations of the Bible such as the NASB the NKJV and the ESV because they are from the corrupt Siniaticus, Vaticanus and Alexandrian texts as well as Westcott and Hort so they should not be used, I should only stick with the KJV., so what do you recommend given that do really like to hear Pastor John preach. Any help from your point of view would be helpful thankyou.
JM has been an enormous blessing to me. The first sermon of his I heard was in July of 2020. It is a two part sermon called “Saved or Self Deceived”. Changed my life. 😌
John MacArthur, Steve Lawson, and R. C. Sproul are probably the greatest blessings God has gifted the church with in the last 50 or so years. There are others, to be sure, but the soundness and Christ centeredness of their teaching and preaching cannot be refuted in my humble estimation.
I absolutely love John MacArthur and his study Bible. So helpful with learning the Word. Unlike Dr. MacArthur, I am Amil, subscribe to covenant theology, hold to real presence of Christ during the Lord’s Supper, and affirm infant baptism. However, despite these theological differences I respect him deeply and still learn a lot from him. In these days there are only few pastors that do faithful expository preaching and unashamed of the Truth. He also very generously provide free resources via Grace to You and that was wonderful.
John MacArther is the only pastor I listen to myself. He is TRUE TO GOD'S WORD, isn't in it for anything but TRUTH, and GOD resides in him. There are other pastor's that are very good and also as true to GOD'S word; but, he just captures my attention like no one else.
I've heard it said, "The best bible translation is the one you will actually read." I would add, "as long as it isn't The Message or The Passion translations."
I used to agree with that...and have heard it a lot. But I agree with your addition! If you have a choice read a solid translation not a paraphrase. Good words Scott!
Today is May 3, 2022. I will be 46 😱 in December. In June 2020, as cities burned, I was overheard on an internal work conference call telling my teenage son “we are not racists….the racists crap the media is saying about ALL white people is NOT true”! I made this statement to him after he entered my office to show me his yearbook which he had just picked up. When I opened the cover, I saw smiling faces of every color looking back at me. My son and I had been having a conversation the day before about the news making claims that white males are a threat and all white people are born racists. 😑 Anyways…I was overheard after mistakenly thinking I was on mute🤦🏻♀️….someone “got offended”, reported me to HR and 4 days later…I was fired. I am a nurse and worked as a consultant traveling to hospitals in multiple countries. It was DEVASTATING to say the least. Financially…emotionally and personally. It was hard. I thank God for my husband who had to remind me we would be okay. Sorry for the long posts…I’ll wrap it up soon. 😁 That was June 2020. I said the “repeat after me prayer” when I was 13 and had always considered myself a “good person”. My goodness…I have so much more to share with this testimony but I’ll push to the point. I had NEVER read my Bible. Had no clue who Paul was. 😬 Didn’t really understand the meaning of the cross or the significance of the resurrection. 😢 How is it possible to claim to be a Christian and yet have no idea what it means???? In my previous posts, I mention “finding” JM. It was 100% God’s providence, grace, mercy….all His goodness that led me to discover the teachings of JM. Now…I said ALLLLLL that to get to this point… when finding his videos, I would see negative comments about “dispensationalist” and “Calvinist”. I had ZERO clue what any of that was. Never heard of the reformation and could not for the life of me figure out how Martin Luther King Jr fit into the scheme. 😬🤔😂 To say I was ignorant to church history and doctrine is way beyond an understatement. Okay…here is the conclusion. I appreciate your humble willingness to mention differences in your vs JM’s interpretation on some points while still uplifting his contribution to the faith. It saddens me to think of people who read those comments and decided to NOT listen to his teachings. Once again…I praise My Lord and Savior for His abundant mercy and thank him for “shaking me by the shoulders” to wake me from my Self Deception. ~Tammy NC

Appreciate the care in which you unpacked your recommendations. I do agree that John MacArthur is only a man, and man is fallible. There is much to be gleaned in the work of God in his labor and ministry, and for that I am so thankful, but it’s not lost on me that the Church also needs to labor in reading and meditating on God’s word and in praying. Very refreshing video chat,I do have couple versions of John Macarthur study bibles,nasb,nkjv they are both packed with weather of commentary and notes, really like both of them.
I am reading the LSB this year. I do really like it. Yahweh does catch me off guard because it is different. Like they deemed it May be the most accurate way to use the name of the LORD, I just find that I will have to get used to it.
I have the NASB MacArthur Study Bible in goatskin leather I also have that MacArthur commentary as well, would like to get the new testament commentary set.
It is nice to have. You can pick um up one at a time if you can’t afford the whole set. Even keep an eye out for digital sales if you use Logos or something like that.
Yep. I actually don't agree with his view on eschatology and Israel. But I can learn a lot about scripture from that. MacArthur is a dispensationalist. I'm really not. But I still think he's one of the greatest theological minds of our generation.

Yep. I actually don't agree with his view on eschatology and Israel. But I can learn a lot about scripture from that. MacArthur is a dispensationalist. I'm really not. But I still think he's one of the greatest theological minds of our generation.

Well technically yes. But if you have the first edition prob not worth buying the second. IMO they’re close. There’s always just some updates.
