    Best wild edible and medicinal plant I can suggest you if you live in Florida or are stuck here in the swamp the plan is called American beautyberry it is very easily distinguished amongst other plants it develops a purple umbrella basically of tiny beads of fruit which are edible we don't have a lot of taste make sure they're purple when you eat them or you will surely have dry mouth but this plant when rubbed on the skin will keep mosquitoes away yes ladies and gentlemen welcome to Florida you're in the swamp we have horrible mosquitoes this is a listen to Seminoles learned American beautyberry learn this plant eat it if you have to but please put it on your skin and thank me later

    Thanks! I have spiderwort growing all over my backyard. But I must have some chives as well. I was mowing it down and I would smell onion. So I let this grow thinking it might be garlic. But it wasn't. I will keep looking for the chives or wild onions that must be growing near it. I will just put this in the front yard as it grows well and hardy. Also good for insect bites and stings, the leaves in a pultice. :)

    Theyre YELLLOW because next to the roadway theyre probably spayed with pesticides, incecticides. Dont eat along the roads. Go in wooded areas. 👍Great knowledge.thanks!

    I use to eat the roots of the smilax vine. The pioneers use to make a tea from the roots. I hear the berry's are edible but I have never tried them

    Good video, but the one thing I would recommend to everyone watching.....DO NOT gather your forage from road sides. The pollution from petro chemicals and other contaminants (oil, gas, exhaust, antifreeze, heavy metals, asbestos from brake pads etc) from vehicles, and who knows what else and the runoff from the road makes it not a good idea. Go off the roadway as far as possible when foraging. Also on the wild onion/chives, make absolutely sure that you are identifying them correctly as Death Camas and wild onion are very very similar and Death Camas is exactly what it's name implies...it will kill you. I don't think I've come across Death Camas where I live in Florida but it is common out in western states at times growing right beside wild onion. Happy, safe foraging everyone!

    Gotta be careful picking roadside plants. Alot of co. spray along the roads.

      @@khuyennguyen23 they mean counties. Counties spray the roadside with herbicides regularly

      Carl Kristensen oh ok. Thanks for your info.

    • @horticultureherbalist7442
      @horticultureherbalist7442 4 года назад +4

      Absolutely. Both herbicides like round up that are cancerous and the fumes of cars that seep into the soil reach roots and contaminate the plants. Please be careful to go further from these places. Also ask your local parks department about what they use in wooded areas near by.

    Linda Martineau used to live in Gainesville Florida,now she moved to Louisiana. We have bunch of wild edibles here also. Smilax when cooked tasted a lot like asparagus

  • @JimmyFloridatube
    @JimmyFloridatube 3 года назад +3

    Smilax is not only edible, but it is a delicacy that tastes even better than asparagus. The local deer eat most of it around here before I can get to it, but when I do get lucky and find some big Smilax vine tops, I steam them with a little butter with salt and pepper and they are every bit as tasty as asparagus. I think it is possibly the best wild edible I have ever foraged in meal quantity.
    I heard it was also known as Greenbrier.

    You may have your camera on auto focus. Those vines- I HATE them, now I can eat them 9well a tiny bit of them )
    ! Thank you! Dandelions- leaves are clean no bumps or hair. One of my favorite things to eat, are the green balls on the Passion Flower vines (future flowers) theyre larger than most things growing, except cactus plums, & very tasty.

    How far into the woods on the sides of the road do sprayed pesticides and insecticides travel? Also, would any of these 4 edibles have a high probability of harboring dangerous parasites or bacteria that could make you seriously and irreversibly ill?

    Love the video. Definitely I need to learn more about wild edibles. I'm hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2016. So I have a lot to learn about wild edibles I have a question at the end of your video you mentioned people let you can on their property. How do you go about finding people willing to let you camp on their private property?

      I went off of recommendations and contacts. I was traveling around visiting homesteads, nature enthusiasts, and permaculture enthusiasts, all people who tend to be passionate about what they are doing, and they usually have connections to others similar type people in the community. I also went to farmers markets and talked to farmers that were progressive and friendly and talked to them about what I was doing and asked if I could come visit their farm. Most people were more than happy to host.
