I think the issue might be that the halter is not meant to be ridden with such a strict contact. The whole idea is that the reins should be slack unless you want something, otherwise the halter sends TONS of mixed signals.

    Bella seamed confused

Are you using a proper bit less bridle, the only ones I’ve seen have the reins attached to the sides. From the video it appears yours are attached underneath so any contact is giving the signal to back up. With you giving the leg aids to go forwards she seems confused so thinks you want her to rear up. I may be wrong, only my thoughts.

What you're talking about is a side pull. The halter properly is used with reins atteched underneath but should not be ridden with a strict contact

I think that's exactly the problem. Could you get a proper bitless bridle instead?

Hmmm it is just so unexpected. Could be dangerous with the potential of rearing. There is always dangers riding in a halter, my horse bolted in the bush. When he realised that I could not slow him down from a canter he flat out bolted towards home. We parted company when he did a sharp left turn. To be fair to him he waited to see if I survived the fall. But I was angry and he knew it and I swore at him. He decided then that I could walk miles home and off he went tail like a flag very happy with himself prancing like Pepe Le Pew. I applaud you I really do it was a difficult situation you handled better than most including myself

@ksanurse I have horses bolt with me while riding in a halter but the it was always manageable because they’re taught to bend. It’s critical to teach the horse one rein stop, it’s a game changer when it comes to safety while riding in a halter.

@ it was a long time ago he was green and untrained and I was 18. I had him bolt it was a thing with him occasionally. I think he learned from that day. He would do it in a bridle. We were a bad combination both young. And stupid. But he went on to become a show horse even so. I did learn to go with the bolt till he stopped or if there was room turn him in a circle. I still loved him and kept him all the days of his life. Been gone 33 years and I still have his halter hanging on my kitchen post. Sometimes the difficult horse can end up the best horse.💔

Prior to this series of excerpts ("bitless"), you were schooling Bella with an emphasis on quiet walk with something of a frame - asking her "head down" and rewarding her for all of that. IMO, this "bitless" (halter with strong contact under her chin, exerting pressure on her nose and poll) is sending her backwards both literally and figuratively. She's confused and evasive but in testament to her responses to your leg she's doing all she can not to explode. Hope you decide to go give this version of 'bitless' a miss - a side pull would have been easier on her because you've already introduced her to driving/steering with your double rein lunging. I don't see this particular part (3 of 6) as Bella being 'determined to do it her way'.

I can´t understand why your saddles are too small to fit your figure, much as I respect your work and courage. It can´t be comfortable for horse and rider. Please correct me if I´m wrong.

It's because it's not a proper bitless bridle the signals are confusing her

Bella, as she is a breed that can spend years learning the classical and higher movements, is still quite young, and may be trying to say she can do more. She is still learning that discipline is every time she is in school, which she will learn, especially as her equitation includes more advanced and the prep to carrying out these moves. She will be able to do all asked of her, in good manner as she continues to mature, and understand the process better. She will behave, although will always require an advanced, or professional, rider.

I think that you are asking too much of her right now - she has already come a long way - she looked so unhappy and unsure in this video. Very well sat though - that could have been painful........and yes, I do ride ( 66 and had a stroke). N. 🐴🐎

She has some interesting gaits ❤ As for this set up regarding bit less bridle, this would be best for horses that knows neck reining. With a bit less bridle, the reins are attached on both sides of the horse’s face which gives the rider control of the head of the horse. I have seen horses (mostly andalusians and PRE) take the bit less well for their first time. This is teaching Bella to listen to your leg commands and your voice as well.

Bella doesn't need a rein at each side to pull her round she knows leg aids very well 😊

Is the bitless halter is not giving her the direction from the sides that she learned from? A hackamore with a gentle nose piece but reins on either side might give her more guidance? I am asking, not instructing

She might with an actual bitless bridle instead of a halter that is not giving her side directions from the reins. Tara will get it figured out
