- Some people are upset that two legendary Hawaii entertainers were asked to leave Prince Kuhio Mall in Hilo after performing for fans during the Merrie Monarch festival. Kumu Hula Iwalani Walsh Tseu and Singer Melveen Leed had just performed for fans when they were asked to leave the mall by the general manager.
What a corrupt event. Organizers Only asked them to leave cause no one got paid to register their performance and no fees were collected. Meanwhile these ladies just wanted to sing and share happiness with their community
I think you just hit the nail head on!!! if there was no $$$$$ going to the mgmt office.
That had nothing to do with the event... it was all the manager.
@@chasenuuhiwa definitely correct. The manager didn’t get kickbacks and gave they ladies trouble
If Hilo could figure out how to gatherings with live music, not only would it be good for tourism, it'll help with college enrollment... The town needs entertainment....and night life. ..or it's just gonna stay boring and everyone just wants to leave
Wow! That’s how the bad management handles impromptu performances by legendary Performers? Then that management personnel needs to be changed out, asap! They obviously lack Aloha, in these parts of America! How sad, for them! Kudos for the legendary Performers filled with Aloha spirit! We gotta love them, all their lives!
The mall manager is flexing his muscle - power trip.
Now the manager will be asked to leave.
:D
Most disrespectful to both the legendary entertainers. They should have been thrilled to have such talent and goodwill to have performed. It sets bad PR for the management that impacts all the businesses. They should apologize to both and welcome them back with open arms to compensate them.
Hilo is just not used to having large crowds for live music...so rare, they can't handle it. . Old Asians own almost every establishment in Hilo and they seriously don't know how to party
What a disgrace! WHEN are we going to learn to treat OUR senior citizens like the treasures that they most certainly ARE?!
I WILL NEVER SHOP IN THAT MALL EVER AGAIN!!!
Wow, where’s the aloha? Those ladies are legends and kupuna.
Wow, how you going tell 2 legends... Go away? What is going on over there?
So what! That’s bringing customers to the establishment? Poor judgment on management 🤬😞🥺
What the Hewa!!! Shame on him! Why take the joy from anyone. Of you were having a bad day never need to take it out on them
I met Melvin Leed at the Airport where I was a cook. She was such a nice lady I made her a sandwich and she gave me her autograph. Every one was looking at me like who is this lady giving you an autograph LOL, I was like you don't know Melvin Leed. I also remember one time Fuji came in and ordered 50 hamburgers for him and his crew. I asked him if he could kanikapila and sing a few songs LOL. Of course he did and that made every ones day.
Oh my goodness! Fiji kanikapila you blessed!!!
How can they do that to our Kupuna no Aloha how sad
That's alright Aunt Mel they should go to Molokai and learn Aloha 😇👣
Come to Vegas. You can perform wherever you like. You can even perform right in front of the Bellagio fountain with no issues whatsoever. More aloha than that shopping center in Hilo. So sad how Hawaii has become anti Aloha.
Time to boycott. Lolo management!
Another manager at PKP with no aloha. This mall has hired more than one manager over the years that was rude to others. The current one should be ashamed for treating any of our elders as well as Na Hokuhanohano award winners, and living treasures for the island culture. What a way to show visitors the opposite of aloha during Merry Monarch. Makes me glad I rarely go to PKP mall.
Melveen is a friggin cultural treasure brah... Mainland alreadeh, even BI getting take ova ...
Oh my gosh!
Is this still Hawaii?
Either miscommunication or the Aloha went absent from mgmt. Either way, a gesture of kindness should always be greeted with respect and acceptance. To know of whom they are is different than a random person “just entertaining”. Be grateful because these two ladies with much love gave years to their community. I hope you invite them back and apologize, it is precious moments you treasure. 🫶🇵🇷 for 🌺😇
Dear Lord - Leave people alone. They wanted to give something with nothing wanted in return. So much for the Aloha spirit.
ALWAYS SOME KIND OF BAD NEWS COMING OUT OF OF THE BIG ISLAND.
YOU ARE BECOMING A THORN IN OUR ALOHA SPIRIT.
ALOHA FROM KAUAI WHERE OUR ALOHA SPIRIT STILL REINGS FOR GENERATIONS!
Whatever with your Mark Zuckerberg estate...
Ya know, I felt a bit of tension during my visit to Hilo this past week. I was standing in front of my car waiting for my family to return from shopping, and I was asked not to stand in front. In the shade. Minding my own business. Making sure I wasn’t blocking the entrance or sidewalk. 🙏💪🌏🌍🌎❤️🇺🇸🖖
Unbelievable! Fire that management! WTH is wrong with them? That’s our kapuna! I can remember watching Aunty at the Kona Lagoon Long House when I was a teenager. Wow, she’s 80 already. She’s timeless. Shame on them for doing that to those beautiful entertainers from the days of old.
If she kept singing she may become responsible for a deadly stampede😮
@@user-db9lz2yl7i ya. Was being sarcastic, fire exit rules are a bit overboard. I bet he just didn't realize that they were respected , famous singers. Could've been planned better. Too many people around here are afraid to party
Shame. Shame on the management.
Yes! Shame! Shame! Shame!
A resounding "Hana o ka lele" is still echoing off the walls of the mall to this day!!
He's a Hawaiian too shame on him to do that
Typical though
Wow the GM was rude.
Is this still Hawaii? Is the mall general manager even from Hawaii? It was Merrie Monarch week. These ladies were full of Aloha and wanted to share it for FREE! God bless Aunty Iwalani and The Tita, Aunty Melveen. They handled it with class. I'm sure the people on the mall were enjoying their performance too.
Hilo doesn't do live music performances with large crowds. Its like an unexplored circumstance around here ...they couldn't cope
Unhawaiian. Disgraceful. My family will never shop at the mall again.
Promise?
That truly sucks. Having been kicked out of The Cannary and Ghrirardeli Square in San Francisco, I can tell you it was not because of you, it was because customers might listen and watch you
perform and not come in and spend money. San Francisco I can understand. They are doing their best to earn the exorbitant rent they pay, but Hilo? Come on. These are fabulous entertainers and the stores should consider themselves very fortunate to have these two. Melvin and Iwalani are fabulous and I would boycott any business who doesn't welcome them with aloha. From Oakland, CA
By asking for forgiveness is not going to HEAL the HURT, all the raves I've heard or read about Hilos Aloha just went byebye, it takes 1(one) ROTTEN PERSON to RUIN it for EVERY BODY
Our legendary entertainers, blessing us with a impromptu performance, & they get treated very rudely in return, this is so uncool of the spineless person who made that call, delegating the awkward task of asking them to leave to security, instead of talking to them him or herself👎
Can't stand managers like that, the one who gotta always throw power trips and Micro manage to feel some sort of power
There was a stupid law passed over 20 years ago that prohibits doing the hula without a permit...... They should've let you keep performing
I’m so sorry that happened. God Bless you both. ❤
WOW … that is the end of Hilo in-Aloha!!! I am heart broken this happened to you both … KICKED OUT OF OFFERING THE LOVE OF YOUR CULTURE IN YOUR OWN LAND!!!
Someone better confirm where this really took place! Fact check!
Pencil pushers are pencil pushers , cowards are cowards real men know how to handle the situation, not call for help.
Manager is lame
SHAME!SHAME!SHAME ON THE MANAGER! Be careful what you attract???!? 👎🏾
Yes! Shame Shame Shame!! No more aloha anymore!
Shame shame shame shame shame shame shame!! (Shaking finger furiously)
GM Karen alert
Nothing enrages me more than seeing our kumu being disrespected in any way 😤😡🤬
To both those aunties, so sorry you had to deal w that - so pilau!
To the manager, just let me play!!!
At least there wasn't a stampede 🤔😉
Ouch.
Now the mall will lose money. Stupid mall manager haha.
Look what happened to Walmart Downtown hnl......easy come, easy go!
Hilo people still need to shop.I i dont think so.
@@Waynes-xt9gr way off topic. But okay.🙄
@@tonisanoedelacruz9754 That's not the only mall in that town.
when this situation goes viral online.....only a matter of days when upper mgmt hits the roof!!! I can see this happening on oahu, but in BI??? manager gotta take a chill pill and take a vacation!!!
1. Our culture recognizes impromptu Mele as a gift!!!
2. Hilo is home if Merrie Monarch… hula and mele are in the air..
3. And…. It is freaking Melveen
Leed!!!!! Jerks!
Management needs to remember..."No Hawaiians, No Aloha!....Know Hawaiians, Know Aloha!"....What a Weak, Spineless excuse.... Management wasn't notified of performer's/performance!"-wtf?!... Management needs to attend Hawaiian Culture & History classes!...Hana Hou, aunties...Hana Hou!
Manager is Hawaiin, wat now heh?
What is the name of the General Manager of Prince Kuhio Mall with no Aloha? I hope everyone calls him to shame and asks him to LEAVE!!!! Last time I was there I felt a coldness in my bones. No Aloha so sad 😞
A State Senator is already calling for his "immediate firing"... There we go... Thats a good change of energy
His name is Glen Miyashiro
He went to Kaimuki High School
Then he went UH Manoa
Then he went work in one mall...
@@jessicatevnan3137 these Asians really don't like to party. That's why Hilo is so boring and college students don't like to stick around
So shame to do that during a moment of sharing ALOHA . I am sorry this happened to you two beautiful women. Pls visit us in Hilo, again. Aloha
Kuhio Mall it's free entertainment to the public, you don't need to be informed! Free is never planned!
Fire the manager.
That is so disrespectful to these Hawaiian musician icons. Shame on management to do that to them.
I can see where management was coming from. Safety issue, liabilities. All total misunderstanding.
Now the big island forget meaning of aloha. Too much mainland influence. Just like Maui or Oahu.
Obviously too many good jobs on the islands don't go to locals.
So a local did a shameful thing and you’re blaming mainland influence? Typical , no accountability for his own actions, it must be someone else’s fault huh. Pathetic.
Mainland? In the mainland they would have let them perform without any hassles. This is why locals are leaving Hawaii. He probably kicked them out because they didn't show proof of vaccination. Haha.
@@johnwindham6226 you're jumping to an awful lot of conclusions and that's pathetic! I've seen the influence and the change over the past few years.
@@TJ-zn4et I’m no jumping to any conclusions, I’m responding to your direct quote that there’s too much mainland influence, how is it mainland influence? What a local does a bad thing? Quit making excuses, grow up and be accountable for your own actions don’t blame things on others. Seems like you’re the one jumping to conclusions.
The mall is designed with mulltiple pathways ito safely egress. Ask any commercial architect or building official. To say otherwise is less than truthful.
WOW!?!
Our kupunas are Hawaii's treasures! Shame on you!
How shame... not even cool Prince Kuhio Mall.
It's just how Hilo is. No music scene... Too many loopholes and restrictions, no one courageous enough to host good music venues in Hilo. Pathetic....why do you think college students aren't returning? .. old Asians run Hilo and they don't believe in people being festive and coming together to play loud music with crowds of people.
What is the name of the manager?
Clinton Kubota
@@jessicatevnan3137 who is that Kea guy?
What a disgrace. Since when you going tell two Hawaiians they cannot sing or dance in Hawaii? That is unheard of. Where the manager from? Does he know these ladies? Need to take one course in HawaiianCulture 101 - respect Kupuna lolo.
No Aloha Prince Kuhio mall. The land that the mall is on is being leased by Hawaiian Homes no less. They are an embarrassment to Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole himself, who helped to pass the Hawaiian Homes Act. Change the mall name to the Haole Shopping Center.
Hi , finally ( pkm) is on Hawaiian homes land . It’s a shame that such beautiful live Hawaiian history should be silenced at all ! 😟😟😟🏄🏿♀️😟💔
Good idea! 💡 Haole Shopping Center sounds more progressive and modern.
This is so disrespectful shame no respect hilo
I called everyone call blow up the phones till the GM resigns don't allow them to do business with their phones
No Hawaiians, no ALOHA, NO HAWAI'I.
Shame on management.
This is very disheartening to hear , SHAME!! The nerve of that GM. 🥶
This management had such disrespect for our amazing Elder Dancers, Our Culture and Aloha. They need a goo talking to.
Need new management company. Disrespectful.
Mall GM should have been fired. There should b more funding for higher education for kids with Hawaiian.
No Aloha
I don't think I will ever go to the mall again!😒😒
Why couldn't they ask management before performing on private property? Respect goes both ways?
I agree
Because they're too old crones farting dust who've had their asses complimented by psychophants for almost a century so they have "big head"
This is what happens
Poor thing our keikis
Land no belong to us.
We the people
No can enjoy any more.
Even if that’s Hawaiian homestead land.
Private entities can kick us out
Kuhio Mall sits on Hawaiian Lands...what is wrong with them?? Where's OHA??
@SonderDAze X Exactly!
If management is Hawaiian shame on them. If they're not no surprise. Hawaiians can't even be spontaneous anymore. There goes the neighborhood!
Don’t go to this establishment anymore then and spend no money. Pathetic and lack of Aloha 😢
Auwe na Ho'i e! Hewa
That’s so disrespectful for telling them to leave!!! That got me fired up.
OMG I can't believe this, I see no harm in this.Probably Manager did'nt have a front row seat or one HAOLE!!!👎👎👎
Yes! Tar and feather this haole! Find him, dox him and force him to swim in the general direction of California immediately!!! The dust of Melveen's farts has decreed it. Let it be so.
Ha Na! 😡
Howlie go home ?
Fu😜😳 you your myopic racist opinion doesn’t help the situation. Those ladies with their gray hair and their fair skin it was probably a Hawaiian manager that asked them to leave not recognizing that they were Hawaiian and they were who they were. Your ignorance is showing and it’s not attractive. This is a volcanic island you had to take a boat to get here too. you have no more claim to this earth than anybody else you have no more rights than anybody else you’re not more better than anybody else go look in the mirror you fat angry uneducated human. Tell me I’m wrong I bet all of those words are very descriptive of you may peace find your soul
@@menotyou6254 someone doesn't recognize sarcasm when they see it....
Wake up Hawaii !!! That's how it is now HAOLE STYLE . MONEY TALKS .AOLE ALOHA
"Some ppl were upset," "ppl were outraged" and to prove it, they show the self same person who was asked to leave. And she can't even "phantom" why they were asked to leave 😂 And the reporter can't find 1 of these "outraged fans" to interview for their story. Hawaii "news" is always a hilarious joke!
Welcome to Biden voters
but democrats welcome the homeless and shoplifters.
Liability? Impromptu kanikapila performance and someone gets hurt or falls. Who's fault? Does someone need to be paid for singing their song? Probably. Copyright laws.
I don’t blame him for choosing to feed his family vs accommodating the privileged. How dare he do his job on private property. I to don’t like being told what to do on someone’s else’s property that does not belong to me. So disrespectful. Let’s unite and ruin this man’s life in the name of Aloha and privilege.
Well they need to follow the law no matter their age they now know next time no big deal why is this News ?
Good point. . Everyone is making it sound like the manager was trying to kill the Aloha.. when's he's probably just following the legal guidelines
Well when I come and start my little eco farm I'm going to build a dance floor and little party area...they can all come to my house ❤️ 😍 💖 ❣️ 💕
Just be sure it's close to a populated town of people who dying to dance and party... Like Hilo...and not way off in rural distance....
Lol, man slow news day huh?
kicked out b/c not vaxed
