    Great video. But what Toronto needs is a subway. For those that argue about cost, as a global city and one of the most advanced country in the world, there's no reason why we can't build it. If countries like Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Mexico and even India can build a more extensive network by starting construction even later, there's no reason why Toronto can't. Sure, cost is a constraint but so is it for all the other cities. It's all about efficiency and policy implementation which Toronto lacks. And let's be honest, the transportation in Toronto does little to represent what a global city should look like.

    • @activelow9297
      @activelow9297 2 года назад

      You're comparing Toronto to cities that have twice, three times, or more population. Toronto has an above average amount of rapid transit lines compared to other cities of 2-3 million.

    • @PradeepJohnsonChung
      @PradeepJohnsonChung 2 года назад +3

      @@activelow9297 Not true. Did you even do your research? Toronto has more population than Kuala Lumpur or Taipei. Maybe you're right - let's compare to Chicago, the closest North American city in terms of climate, infrastructure and population. They have more than twice the subway system length, with half of Toronto's ridership. That tells you Toronto's system is severely overused. There's a reason why Metrolinx is now pushing for subways rather than LRT. By your standard, Toronto had way less population back in the 1950s, why did they decide to build subways? Oh what a waste of money they should just built BRTs or kept buses!
      Let's face it, LRT is easier to build and cheaper. The reason politicians advocate for it because it can be completed within their time as mayors so they can brag about it. It's however, not in the interests of Torontonians, especially those who don't live downtown. Don't forget Crosstown should have been built by now and it's been delayed like 3 years? LRT isn't free from construction delays - like I said above, the lack of efficiency and policy implementation is what Toronto lacks.

    The Scarborough RT is actually a mini-subway. The original SRT was going to be a regular streetcar running up a private right of way. It was pretty cool when built and it would be relatively inexpensive to upgrade and expand much like the Skytrain in Vancouver. Scarborough already has 3 subway stations and 6 SRT stations. The crosstown line will be fantastic other than introducing another rail vehicle not compatible on other lines due to track guage.

    If the end-point is Kennedy, why not just continue the Sheppard Line. There is no point in redundant, expensive separate line that is intended to cater to the same riding public. A better LRT could be an elevated system that will go through the length of Eglinton Avenue and beyond, that has the potential of establishing a link between Toronto and its neighboring cities, Mississauga, Pickering, etc.
    A tourist, local or foreign, can go through a sight-seeing journey through the city. Ontarians can live in the suburbs and still work in the financial and commercial districts of Toronto and Mississauga.
    This LRT which will be another subway line is a waste of money.

    • @roshansri1636
      @roshansri1636 3 года назад

      Unfortunately for those who do not live in Scarborough do not realize the expensive toll that gentrification is causing the east end. Ultimately Scarborough is a place where things are far apart and you need to be able to drive to get from one place to another. A glorified streetcar in separate lanes will only increase traffic not decrease it. What many who disregard subways also don't understand is that many commuters cannot simply afford to pay the expensive GO transit fares to commute to the city from Durham or Markham and instead must rely on either driving or subways as an express service. The Scarborough subway extension is excellent because it allows someone to drive right off the highway to a subway that takes you directly to the heart of downtown. Similar to how slowly but surely TYSSE is starting to pick up more and more passengers, subways would do so for Scarborough

    Dude. Calgary, Seattle, Stockholm, and LA are not known for their efficient transit services, let alone light rail. Portland, Vancouver (yes, the Skytrain is a light rail service), Scarborough, Rotterdam, Hong Kong (Yuen Long district), and London (DLR) have far better working light rail services. The rest of the world also calls them tram services and there's plenty of examples of amazing tram services in Europe and Asia.
    I'm also not convinced that light rail is any faster than bus service. In every city which has added light rail (even mass rail), commute time has actually INCREASED. In Edmonton, the current LRT is maxed at 70kph, and never reaches that speed except on the couple outskirt stations because stations are close and longer trains take time to speed and slow down. The new LRT light being added is a glorified streetcar and will go 50kph or less.
    Increase in travel time (compared to bus) has happened even in places like Hong Kong, and London. When the new rail services are added, routes are diverted to the rail services, interchanges take extra time to get to, etc. On-grade rail also means increase in road commute times. In a BIG city, it's not recommended unless the trains are one-cars (like trams in Europe). You will NEVER find light rail in the most efficient transit cities take up the core.

    • @marks5141
      @marks5141 7 лет назад +1

      LRTs usually aren't too much faster than express buses when they run on streets in dedicated lanes, but they do exponentially increase capacity. However, once they get underground or onto real rails in the case of Edmonton then they become just as fast as subways.
      Also, big portions of this LRT line is underground, where the streets above are filled with buses and cars moving at 1km/h.

      As someone who lives near Vancouver, I'd say screw the Scarborough RT. It's noisy and cramped and a Subway would be better. Even though we have those same trains on the skytrain they seem to be quieter on the skytrain than on the rt. And LRTs are great.

      lrts are ideally cheaper than both RTs and subways, faster to build and go much faster than buses
      toronto is just a horribly mismanaged city
