Homosexuality and the Church: Is there such a thing as a Gay Christian?

  • A Christian Pastor explains the status of homosexuality in the church, reasons for the ongoing conflict between theology and contemporary sexuality, and possible ways to move forward.
In the past, the natural order was thought of by the church as one means of understanding God and his will. More clearly, the Bible gives a revelation of God's will for human sexuality and its expression within the context of marriage and procreation.
As a culture moves toward Christianization many of the practices once thought appropriate come under new reconsideration. Here in a culture moving toward humanism and secularization traditional thought about sex, marriage and the best path human flourishing can become confused.
Here, we've asked a Pastor to explain how traditional Christianity interprets homosexual behavior, its meaning and relationship to faith and practice.

From the Bible, in the New Testament in the book of Romans, chapter one:
"Because of this, God gave them over to the lusts of their own hearts, to uncleanness, to defile their own bodies between themselves:
25 which turned the truth of God unto a lie, and worshipped and served the the created while abandoning the Creator, which is blessed forever, Amen.
26 God gave them over to the love of disgusting things: for even their women changed from the natural use of sexuality to that which is against nature.
27 And in the same way, the men left the natural use of the woman and burned in their lust one toward another, and men with other men did evil - and received in themselves such consequence of their sin.
28 For as they did not acknowledge God in their hearts, God delivered them over to a reprobate mind to do those things which are evil, they being flooded with unrighteousness"

Ok you are talking about the Old Testament BUT let’s go to the New Testament , God says that in the last days, men will lose the desire to lay with woman for sexual encounter. The same wth woman, they will desire another woman instead of a man. SO GOD WILL LEAVE THEM TO THIS THINKING.The word of God says that no one doing this will inherit heaven. You are a false prophet, and hell is waiting for you. GOD CREATED MEN AND WOMAN. WHY DOES GOD HATE THIS SIN< BECAUSE GOD CREATE SEX FOR MAN AND WOMAN IN MARRAGE AND TO PROCREAT.

Graceview Presbyterian Church I happened to be targeted by this ad. I am a Hindu Indian-American, and I happen to be pansexual. I have no personal investment in finding out if a particular sect of a religion that I have no affiliation to regards non-heterosexual relation as a sin, because I am not in any way bound by that particular religion. Moreover, I feel strongly that what my sexual orientation is should not impact my ability to go to some sort of peaceful afterlife, as I do not believe a deity who supposedly created all that’s around us would have a hateful disposition towards their own handiwork. I’m pretty sure that they would’ve had at least the foresight to plan out everything beforehand. My pansexuality is just the way I naturally am, and not some choice I decided to make, so it doesn’t make any sense that a deity who supposedly created me would damn me to some sort of violent afterlife before I became myself.

Bhargav - Believing in a god or not believing in a god doesn't have anything to do with whether or not that god does or does not in fact exist. If you choose to make up a religion but it doesn't correspond to reality that faith will not serve you well.
There must be some reasonable basis for one's religious bias, something more than mere preference or whether or not that belief aligns with one's sexual appetites.
If the God that is exists happens to not be the god of your imagination, it is reasonable to assume that the after life might not be as pleasant as supposed.
And that one's sexuality may very well have moral meaning beyond mere pleasure or personal inclination.
The reason why we read the Bible is to receive a personal and direct communication from God that goes beyond our mere intuition or human philosophies to know, not just think but know, the mind and will of God.
In the beginning was the word, and the word was God and the word was with God... John 1

I do not believe the church (any church) should condone: marry, allow their weddings in the church, attend them, nor be okay with the lifestyle. However, they shouldn’t be banned. I am a sinner. If your reading this, your a human, therefore a sinner. I feel if we banned them it would be very wrong. People should go to church as a way to build their personal relationship with Jesus, and it’s not mans business to decide who and whom not to accept.. within reason. Of course I don’t feel anyone who poses a direct threat, or endangers others should be allowed, but that goes with any public place. I’m just saying I don’t believe it’s right we should have to bake them a cake for their wedding, but if they are banned from church it’s counter productive, and I feel it will just create more people acting out. We need to show them love and teach them what we can about the God who created all of us, and loves us all.

    • @graceviewpresbyterianchurch
      @graceviewpresbyterianchurch  5 лет назад

I agree Dustin. No one is talking about banning anyone. If we think that homosexual behavior is something that can bear moral analysis then there's nothing wrong with talking about it. There are reasons to think it might not be the best possible thing for people. We can then weigh those things see what we should think about it. We love, everyone. We give grace to, everyone. At the same time if someone wants to know if the gay interpretation of self is a good thing then it should be meaningfully discussed.

Also, Jesus was Jewish but he did reject many of the old testament's teachings, he frequently would override old laws of the land, which is a lot of what the new testament was about. It was a new age, where stoning women was no longer okay, where we would "love thy neighbor". Neither of us know Jesus' exact or explicit views on gay people, I chose to interpret his message of "love thy neighbor" as extending to gay people, and I chose to believe that Jesus, being a higher being, would probably be totally okay with gay people, you see it another way. And since you go by the Bible for everything you must follow the makers diet as well right? So you shouldn’t be eating and drinking anything with added sugar , ham, roast beef, and corned beef. Not to mention all grains and starchy foods including pasta cereal, pastries, and baked goods. The only things you can eat according to the Bible are barley, corn, millet, oats, rice, rye, wheat, soybean, sunflower seeds, sesame, seeds, flax, and pumpkin seeds. Lentils, peas, peanuts, other beans. Bell peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, melons, okra, pumpkins, squash, tomatoes, strawberries, and other berries. Lemons ,limes, palm fruits, almonds, Brazil nuts, cashew nuts, pecans, walnuts, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and collard greens. Globe artichoke, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, beets, potatoes, and turnips. Cow, deer, lamb, caribou, buffalo, elk, goat, and moose. Bass, bluefish, crappie, perch, pike, salmon, sunfish, and trout. Chicken, pheasant, grouse, quail, locusts, crickets, and grasshoppers. Keep in mind that you also have to have your meat cooked all the way through because you can’t eat animal blood. And you are not allowed to use to many spices or add any sugar. So good luck on following the Bible to a T!

These issues are explained in detail in the video itself. The responses seems reasonable and are reconcilable with the understanding of the historic church. Nothing has changed but the times. Do you think it's ok to murder, steal and commit adultery now just because they are written about in the Old Testament? Some moral teachings continue and some don't as is obvious from the text. Which ones continue is not hard to understand.

A person is what they think and what they do. I don't think we can meaningfully say that what person is doing, the way they defined themselves is "bad" and call the person themselves good. Better that we encourage every person to faith, hope, love and good deeds. Really, none of us a good in and of ourselves. Plainly the Bible was written by men. It says it was written by men, so really no one is confused about that. So I think you're deeper question is simply whether or not it's true, because if it's true, homosexuality is not a way that people should have sex. And then, the Apostles and the Prophets were taught what to say by God and so even though the Bible was written by men, it is the word of God.

There is no such thing as many different interpretations of the Bible. I’ve a pocket sized New Testament and before Matthew starts, there’s an entire section dedicated to human feelings and overall topics that the directory will lead you to read and guide you. E.i. If you’re interested in what Holy Law is in regards to sex, depression, anxiety, fear, the spirit and e.t.c., (it should look something like: Deuteronomy [followed by:] 12:6,) the scripture will provide you with the wisdom you need for whatever emotion(out of 27,) you chose and whatever topic there is that you chose based on your concern. I say that there is only one interpretation and it’s the one you read(word for word with flow,) hopefully you know how to read; it’d be God’s word by Jesus’s teachings or the teaching from an Apostle of Christ/God and on another note, the Bible literally says a relationship between one man and another( in the way a man and woman have passion for each other,) is detestable. Lastly, doesn’t the spirit of God or Jesus for that matter(because he dies for our sins and he’d want you to divert yourself from being a sinner,) lead you away from sin? And should you sin, don’t you think there’s a punishment or consequences?Because there is such thing as punishment for our sin(s.) We cannot ignore God’s form(s,) of communication otherwise we will be chastised(I learned this from the Quran[the last book given to us by God,]) I went to the Quran because I finished reading 2-4 entirely different Holy Bibles, one being the American Standard Version(ASV,) and The Common English Bible(CEB.) P.S. there are 50 different Holy Bibles via blue Bible app via App Store but you only need to read 49 because one out of the 50 is entirely in Hebrew(something I do not read, write or speak,) but I can condense this for you(should you not want to read all 49,) I recommend the CEB, it has 17 missing chapters/books/bibles/titles that the King James Version(KJV,) lacks. Oh and if you’re intrigued with what the Jews follow, you can read Jewish Law on the internet, all 613 commandments/rules/Deuteronomy. *i posted this comment before entirely watching and listening to this video, I just had something to say*
