The atmosphere, stage design, characters, music, lore behind the Combine, revolutionary physics engine and graphics for its time, lack of cinematic pre-rendered cutscenes, etc. I think it still stands up on its own to this day, even without mods. Uhhhh, I mean 4/10, HL3 comefirned.
Nympheima Fix The level design isn’t really bullshit, there are arenas to battle the combine that allow you to attack them head on or flank, also the combine AI isn’t as stupid as people think.
Imma be real with you, I think it’s just an okay game. The pacing and physics are perfect, some of the areas are great, and half of the weapon selection is fantastic (the smg, shotgun, crossbow, and gravity gun are all super fun to use and excel is specific situations), but the enemy variety is super boring, the level design is super linear and non replayable, the other half of the weapon selection is useless (the crowbar, usp, and revolver are never useful unless you run out of ammo in the other guns. Hl1 has a much better weapon selection), and most of the characters are boring and forgettable. The game is still really good but I don’t think it holds up as well as a lot of other shooters and I honestly think the first game is better.

Combine soldiers have one of the most advanced AIs in fps and the only reason why they don't regurarly serve ur ass is because their stats are weak to make the game fun.

A story game doesn't need to completely stop the player from doing anything for several minutes to tell a story. There's several story focused games that are able to have characters talk without stopping the game play and some that are even able to tell a story without any dialog at all. So when you say that 3 minutes of just standing around listening to characters talk is completely justified by the fact that the game has a story to tell your are completely wrong.
