Lyrics:
Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free
Like a worm on a hook
Like a knight from some old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee
If I, if I have been unkind
I hope that you can just let it go by
If I, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you
Like a baby, stillborn
Like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me
But I swear by this song
And by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to thee
I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch
He said to me, "You must not ask for so much."
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door
She cried to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?"
Oh like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free
I first discovered the music of Leonard Cohen when I was a very lost 17 year old long haired kid around 1967. I loved his music then, have never lost my love for his music and doubt I ever will. I am now a few weeks short of my 72nd birthday and find that the older I get the more poignant and important his music is to me. Songs such as Tonight will be fine and So long Marriane... are ....WONDERFUL.
Thank you Leonard for your music.
Hope you had a great 72nd birthday despite the current climate, and many more to come!
Happy post Birthday Mr. Howard. My Dad gave me the gift of Leonard Cohen when I was young. He often referred to himself as a "long hair" , thank you for the memory!
I bought his first album in 1967 in Thule, Greenland when I was in the Air Force. Had never heard of him but the album cover was interesting and albums only cost $2.35 in the base exchange. I was 19 then and have been a huge fan ever since.
3 of the best my friend
I am 72 too. I was born in Hong Kong digging Dylan and the Stones, a friend told me about him and I bought his record. Can't remember the first song I hear but it took me into another world for which I am happy to stay.
Hey - way back in the day (1972 ish), my mom would hear me listening to Bob Dylan and say, "he sounds like he's dying" - the when I would put on Leonard Cohen she would say "He sounds like he is already dead" ... STILL, after listening to one of my favorite singers in the world, K.D. Lang, sing this song, and a few others recommended by others, I still think that LEONARD'S version is THE BEST !!! No Frills, No Clear Tones, just a TIMELESS DEEP CONNECTION to the SONG .... Now that he really is 'already dead' -- we who love his songs know he will never die.
Your mom is funny 😂
😂my mum. Asked me if I had set my player to the wrong speed!
I am now in my 60s and still love this man's lyrics music and voice ❤️
Played at my Dads funeral.. he took his own life and these could be his words. This song means the world to me x
Glenna Stevens prayers for your father
WHY ...was he so CRUEL to livin relatives ?.
And will be mine. Thank you
God bless you son.
@@rockinrollinntrollin616 Shut the fuck up.
My Mom used to play Cohen all the time when I was a little kid. Here I am 30+ years later and still one of my favourite songs.
Never thought that a drunk in a midnight choir just wants to be free, but it is difficult too think otherwise after hearing this song. That's poetry - and poetic truths which were so easy to Leonard Cohen.
"Like a baby
Stillborn
Like a beast
With his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me"
EEj. What a cruel and beautiful passage. Cohen tells the truth poetically and while you can't really argue with poetry you know there is truth there.
Bono: "Some people, they are carpenters. They go to work and they make... A door, or a frame. Some people are smiths, they go to work and make iron work. Mr. Cohen is a poet, he goes to work and he makes poetry".
I can’t explain what this song does for me, it’s deep so deep!
: -D
@hannieseverie8759 Because he was also a poet.there are songs that have lyrics that are just incredible...what a loss for everyone when he went to a better world....RIP
...I would like to get drunk today even if I no longer drink a drop of whiskey even if only today at the age of 76 I get to know Leonard Cohen and his poetics, the winds of life blow us with their love when we are with an open heart and today we are either counting money or fighting, so either scotch saves us or Leonard Cohen and his birds on the wire, as Nietzsche said "if there were no music, life would be a mistake"...
From better days …..
Thank you Leonard ❤
Hold my hand, Leonard - take me closer to God - I love you FOREVER!
Why doesn't this have a million views yet? Great music to drink to.
oh dear !
Great music to breathe to.
this minds me of my dad singing this as a child alone with dylan . dont find music like this these.days.
Cohen was a gift. Love his words
One of my 1st musical memories. The LP from my old man is still over there - will always remember him drunk af , just lying on the living room´s carpet , eyes closed drifting off to this , oblivious to everything around him ... LP´s the same , I just turned into him in the meanwhile .
I'm tearing up because this has touched my heart strings!
NEVER gets old
My Best Friend Kieth just passed away @ only 37-And I dedicated this song to him.
When the song ends, I feel heartbroken. So, I keep it in the loop so that it starts over again and again.
Naimul. Stupid question. How do you put a song on a loop?
@@jschuler53 Just Click the right button of the mouse keeping the cursor on the video. The loop option comes first. Thank you
Played this after doing my first seriously important exam this year. Sat in a field, still early in the morning. Sunny.
U must be very young compared with us old yins that saw him live. Great u love listening to him
This masterpiece touches the deepest of my soul
And his girl accompaniments! WoW.
Saw him at the Isle of Wight. He was wearing his Pyjamas!
You have brought with you a complete unknown, an unknown indescribable feeling that keeps me awake all the time.
But I swear by this song ...
🌹🌼So the happy angels in heaven must now be singing with Leonard!🌼🌹
Let him hit the dawn with every morning over Mt Baldy CA
La beauté s'affirme dans la longévité.. Magnifique 🎶
RIP Kris Kristofferson, you’ve changed more lives than you know
Isn't that an epitaph suitable for everyone? "Like a bird on a wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir, I have tried in my way to be free"
Yeah we all get there somehow ; O
oh no, what if everyone can relate to it?
@@qe2eqe Lol, I needed this.
@@qe2eqe not a Chace buddy. I am glad for my people who are Leonard's and glad for my people who are Five Finger Death Punch, mostly they do not mix.
hey thanks for tagging me in elitist bullshit
초기 코헨의 목소리는 치유이자 안식의 목소리로, 힘들고 헤메일땐 늘 코헨의 목소리를 찾고 들으며 치유와 안식을 받고 안도를 느낌니다. 레너드 코헨 감사합니다.
Kris Kristopherson wanted the first three lines of this song on his tombstone. He just passed (RIP).
Good info❤
I will add , This is the finest Lyrics I have ever heard.
In memory of Matt- a wonderful musician, gone too soon- Love a 'friend"
Forever Loved; Forever Remembered
Magnifica. Unico. Irripetibile. Non ci sarà mai più un altro Leonard Cohen. Sublime. ❤😢
My parents did love Leonard Cohen.
My dad passed away last 3rd june. These words could be his.
Ilove this song Leonard 🥂
Many other versions and some more famous but
the original here is the one that feels the best.
It feels the best because it's sung from his heart. I loved him as a girl. I admired him as a woman.
Just so relaxing, if that isn't freedom I don't know what is : -)
I love many versions but you are right no one sings as good as his own version

Très très belle chanson !❤
De mis favoritas, transmite tanto ese tono de voz... Increíble
There was a time when Leonard Cohen with his "Rusty Razorblade" lyrics made a lot of people think of loneliness and despair.
If you watch his performance at the IOW concert (1970) you will hear happy songs too and his third album had not quite been released at that time.
By the time 'I'm your Man' came out we were all singing along with him.
My (current) fave is "Ballad of the Absent Mare".
There are so many great songs in his backlist.
Can anyone think of a bad LC song?
("Lets play another song, boys, this one has grown old and bitter"
- Even that one cheers me up.
Rest in Peace Leonard Cohen
I’m a big fan of Leonard Cohen. This is my first time hearing this song. It’s kinda like So Long, Marianne Pt. 2.
and Suzanne
This is such a beautiful song. Until now I only ever knew the version by Joe Bonamassa (especially the live version from Beacon Theatre), wich I love with all my heart and often has made me cry. This version here, even though it's mostly the same lyrics, is a completely different song for me. Very beautiful, too! But completely different

Viva Spiriman y España !!! 💛 💛
I came across Leonard through an Irish boyfriend, I was hooked from the start, this song is so beautiful
You are definitely correct
hits hard man.
Cohen was one of the best from the beat-nik generation. Changed the way beat-nik's were perceived to be.
Hi Stephanie
Very nice song !
Mister cohen rest in peace.

My thoughts on life is totally encompassed by this song
My beloved cousin who suffered from bipolar took his own life .Was sung at his funeral as well. This song has meant so much for us .My cousin was the head of our family .To me I do wonder if he would have actually taken that step if Zoloft wasn't part of his treatment and in his system. That is the drug that in my humble opinion caused this extreme out of character actionsTheres few that have been reported . At least two I know of a case of a grandson who blew his grandparents away with a shotgun as they slept and The Hartman case in late 90s.My cousin only hurt himself .Yes I understand It may be one way I chose to deal with it but if there's any one that needs to read this I'm putting it out there preventing it from happening is the goal.No one wants to experience the loss of their loved one by an intentional or accidental suicide It's too final .
If Roger Waters says it's one of his favorite songs, I'm in too.

If you love Leonard Cohen please check out his amazing old songs "Joan of Arc" and "Nancy" -- these songs are rarely mentioned these days, but as poet and singer I think they are TIMELESS GEMS.
yeah spot on but take this waltz is beyond amazing
I think it would be better to check his first four albums instead of just a couple of songs
Music to our soul
I think of this every time I walk under a bird on a phone or electric wire. They will shit on you like anything else.
The flight of freedom 😈

OK true self dirt here. 1986. I walk back from Chester Clap Clinic, NW UK. Just got first shot to cure Clap. Just returned from Overseas when faced with issue of meeting romantic interest, from past while realising, fling in London had given me the clap. Then meeting 'old friend' she was just terrible to me before even knowing how bade I was. return to UK and walked back to my Aunties house for 3 mile along a Chester canal listening to this album 3 hours late for dinner. Life imitating art or what?
Erinnert mich stark an 1969 in Israel. Hat mich seit dem begleitet. Unvergesslich.

Hello RUclips family I’m new to this. How do I turn on lyrics for my music on RUclips?
kris kristofferson has promised to use the line about struggling to be free "like a drunk in a midnight choir" as his epitaph.
Black coffee and hand rolled cigarettes at the purple onion.
Beautiful ❤❤
Cohen died the same day Trump took the presidency. I couldn’t get out of bed for three days, just sat listening to Hallelujah, Anthem, and the Partisan, over and over.

Hello MR. LEONARD COHEN. Chapeaau.🪶
Check out Joe Cockers version of this song......You're welcome
I think Katey Sagal's version is the best but Joe's is very good
This song is like a taste of suicide for those who feel at their worst but do not actually want to commit
