    I'd give it to GSP because of how well rounded he is. His game has no weak points.
    GSP is the fighter that forced all other MMA fighters to round out their game. He was the first guy that wasn't a wrestler or BJJ guy, he wasn't a boxer or a striker. He was the guy that was going to find your weakness and expose it because he was that good at everywhere.
    No fighter was more ahead of their time or more influential to MMA than GSP.

      @@tha1f1ghter Well he for sure beat Hendricks (won rds 1,3,5) but that fight shows why judging should be changed so 10-8's and 10-7's can be used more. But under the scoring system at the time GSP won 3 of 5 rounds and you can't give Hendricks a 10-8 in rds 2 or 4.
      And of course he lost to Serra and Hughes. But no MMA or UFC fighter can stay at the top as long as GSP did and beat as many all time greats as he did without having a few losses along the way. All the greats have lost or will lose if they stick around long enough. GSP would have unavenged losses eventually too if he fought long enough into his 40's or whatever.

For me, goat status is tied between Khabib and GSP and yes it is possible they were on steroids but it hasn't been proven. Also Jones last fight was VERY questionable with many people thinking he lost which is not a good look for Jones when Dominic Reyes went on to get knocked out twice after their fight.

  • @pirashik7190
    @pirashik7190 2 года назад +13

    Absolutely loved the video and the whole conversation. Really looking forward to more MMA content. If I had one gripe, it would be the fact that you guys kind of laid out the basis for figuring out who would be the best in terms of their prime, but then you kind of went towards who had the overall better career. When it comes to the goat convo, with the likes of GSP, Silva, Fedor, DJ and Jones in the mix, imo Khabib doesn't even make top 5 in all of MMA, but when it comes to pure dominance, I have a hard time figuring out anyone who had the sheer level of dominance in their prime that Khabib did. Fedor, Jones and Silva all arguably have similarly dominant performances, and their runs were far longer, but Khabib brought in a new level of wrestling that was similar to Royce Gracie's jiujitsu in the first UFC. Nobody had an answer to that style for a long time. And so they basically had to adopt it for themselves. I thought with Gaethje being an All American Division I wrestler and possessing explosive power (arguably the hardest hitter in the division), we may have found the answer to Khabib, but he made Justin look like he never grappled before in his life. And Poirier in my opinion, is more well rounded than any one of GSP's opponents and he looked, as you guys put it, paralyzed in that fight. You could argue that Silva brought in the same level of dominance in terms of the striking, but that was neutralized by Chael with his wrestling, in BOTH their primes, so imagine what a hypothetically similar weighing Khabib would bring to that fight. Would it have ended the same with Silva catching that triangle? I don't know and I can't say, but purely because of the fact that we still haven't found an answer to his style, I'd say that in their primes, Khabib would take it. And thats usually the case for any fighter, since fighters grow and develop and get better over time, its fair to say that even the mid-tier contenders of today would be able to take out the champions of the early UFC's in their prime. Its just a matter of time and not a knock on the older fighters, its clear that athletes are always getting better in every sport.

    Prime vs Prime and Career vs Career are 2 different things.
    Prime Khabib there was nobody even remotely close to him, Gaethje, Poirier and Mcgregor were all in their prime and he made all 3 of them look absolutely helpless, they had no success at all against him.
    There has never been a champion in any weight division in the UFC who was that untouchable.
    Technically, Physically, and Mentally he was on another level to everyone in the division.
    Career wise, he was cut short, and because he was levels above everyone else, there aren't really any of those legendary wars that fans love.

    The problem with comparing older generations is everyone always dismisses as if the fighter wouldn’t have trained different and been as effective. An example is you kind of discredit GSP by saying he fought wrestlers and that was his generation. Do you not think GSP would have evolved with the newer era? Most definitely he would have. GSP and other fighters from older eras were phenomenal athletes and trained to win against who they were given. They definitely would have trained different and learned different techniques in todays era.

    • @soumyadeepbanerjee964
      @soumyadeepbanerjee964 2 года назад

      Furthermore, I think that this point should always be brought up because this is a speculative topic to begin with, unless one brings this point up, shouldn't one only ever compare fighters of the same era (or somewhat overlapping time periods)? Otherwise on the basis of the argument that athletes evolve with time (which is not incorrect) there should be no reason to compare people from different eras because the answer will always be the person who is currently dominant (or was dominant a few years ago). This idea could change in the future if there is a severe case of diminishing returns as far as advancements in fighting regimes go, but it will certainly hold good for fighters of the past who physically had no choice but to fight in their own era.

    Khabib outclassed all his opponents and were barely a competition for him.

    I really like his career, he was a true master at work!
    A lot of you still doubt him of what if he went against Charles who’s a great JJ artist lol Khabib has few wins against black belts and to the casual who said Khabib is one dimensional, Khabib has ko/tko’s , decisions, submissions on his record how TF is that one dimensional????

    You can make an argument for everyone depending on how you define it. The way I look at it - and this is just my opinion - which fighter, if put against every other Champion in that weight class's history, would win the most fights? For example:
    - Khabib vs. every LW Champion I think loses 3 or 4 fights
    - Usman vs. every WW Champion I think loses 9 or 10 fights
    - GSP vs every WW Champion I think loses 9 or 10 fights
    So, and this is just for me, I would put Khabib above GSP. Most 10-8 rounds in UFC history, never been taken down, never bled, only ever lost 2 rounds in his career (and both are very arguable). It's no surprise the LW division became the most competitive division the second he left, but was "lacking competition" while Khabib fought. Sort of the GSP effect when he left. Who knows mate. I'm just so happy that I started watching when UFC PPVs were in single digits. Love that we can reflect to the start of the sport's history.

      10 for Khabib, 2 for GSP, 4 more to rematch Hughes. But why?
      When GSP debuted in the UFC he had a lot of hype behind already, he fought anyone the UFC wanted him to and put on exciting fights and went for the finish. Got on his knees after beating Penn and begged for a title shot and when they gave it to him he finished Hughes and took the title.
      When Khabib debuted in the UFC no one had ever heard of him. He and his team were very picky and choosy about who, where and when Khabib would fight. When he did fight he had boring performances and didn't garner hype. When offered a title shot he turned it down so that he could fast for Ramadan and when Conor got the title shot instead Khabib claimed it was number one bullshit and blamed everyone except Allah for him choosing not to fight for the title. When he won the title he tried to go box Mayweather. When he couldn't he retired.

      Yeah I always found it weird how GSP got flak for not moving up to 185lbs sooner but Silva got none for not fighting Jones, Silva and Jones were way closer in size anyway. And Jones would not be outsized at Heavyweight, especially back then if he'd moved up he'd have had the height and reach advantage over almost all Heavyweights. He might be giving up a few pounds but he'd be at least 230-240 which is not a small Heavyweight, especially if you're 6''4 with the longest reach in UFC history...But still there was almost no pressure on him to move up.
      As well as that GSP also offered a catchweight because Silva did fight at WW just a year before he came to the UFC. Silva made 170lbs in 2006 but couldn't make 179lbs in 2008 for a GSP fight...I don't believe that.

    While they're all amazing fighters, no one and I mean no one was as amazing to watch as Silva. The man was absolutely untouchable at the time. The closest thing to a real life ninja in the octagon. Like every fight he had in his prime ended with a bang. While other guys looked dominant as well but Silva would take your soul!

    Probably a controversial one, but for me it’s Jose Aldo. The man has been in 15 title fights and won 11 of them, he was also fighting at featherweight, which is one of the two deepest divisions in the sport. He beat Cub Swanson, Mike Brown, Uriah Faber, Mark Hominick, Kenny Florian, Chad Mendez (twice), Frankie Edgar (twice) and Korean Zombie. His only losses are to the best of the best, he’s also probably the best defensive wrestler of all time and had both a great top game and bottom game. He was also, similar to Anderson, well ahead of everyone in standup in his prime and he’s still top 5 at bantamweight all these years later.

    It really annoys me that drug cheats still get included in this conversation. They are called performance enhancers for a reason, and to compare these people against clean athletes is an insult. Also it sends a message to future drug cheats that it’s ok… because we’ll look at the greats!

  • @TheAlphaDingo

    Khabib made guys who in a Khabib-less universe, could potentially lay claim to being the GOAT lightweight, look so far beneath him. For mine, his prime is the best. Scary to think he could still be laying waste to challengers even now if not for his decision to retire - otherwise his prime would be a long one at that.

      I love khabib, but i think he made a right call retiring, its better for him and the sport, one because i dont believe the "hes scared" argument and he gets to keep his promise to his mother, u cant knock a man for that, and two because if khabib hadnt retired he would have more than cleared the division and stayed champ for a long time, it might have made the LW division a tad boring as it just would have been fighter after fighter being smashed and choked to bits with no change in champion.
