Hey! I literally just had the same exact idea! I knew that a cube and octahedron are dual polyhedrons. This means that properties of each are the same except reversed with respect to dimension. So a cube has 6 faces and a octahedron has 6 corners, etc. so I realized that if you color each of the 8 faces of an octahedron differently, but also turn it into a puzzle by twisting around vertexes, it would be equivalent to a cube puzzle where you twist around faces, hence a cube with 8 colors. Also, since the center piece on the octahedron determines the color of the face, the corner piece on the cube would determine the colors of the rest of the pieces.
