  • Hello all! Here's a shorter video about replacing the displays in newer ThinkPads (generally xx40 and newer) that I have put together for you. Hopefully it can be of use for some of you! Enjoy and thanks for watching!
    Models this process applies for (to my knowledge, I will update if needed):
    DOES NOT apply for any of the glass touch screen versions (T440s touch, etc)
    X230s
    X240s*
    T440
    T440s
    T450*
    T450s*
    T460
    T460s
    T470/A475
    T470s
    ThinkPad 25
    X280/A285
    T480/A485
    T480s
    T580
    P52s
    X390/395
    T490/495
    T490s/495s
    T590
    P43s
    P53s
    T14
    T14s
    T15
    P1 (all generations)
    X1 Carbon (2nd generation onward)
    X1 Extreme (all generations)
    *The xx50 generation of ThinkPads, as well as the X240, have a display whitelist that makes aftermarket replacements only run at maximum brightness if you use Windows. If you use Linux, flash the replacement screen’s EDID to trick the ThinkPad into thinking it’s a genuine xx50 panel, or flash a custom/unlocked BIOS onto the laptop, this issue can be fixed. Thankfully Lenovo realized their mistake, so the xx50 generation is the only one to have this pointless restriction.

    Great video! Just my 5 cents
    These outer bezel sheets are annoying as hell. In my T450s i replaced the double sided tape with some new thin 3m double sided tape afterwards,. It worked out great. You can also try peelig off just the four corners to reveal the screws and unscrew them- this will eliminate the alignment annoyance and most of the original adhesive will be intact. Since i repair a lot of t440 and t450 screens i usually use this method and it works out really great, and if being careful you can avoid any bezel wrinkling.
    Also since T470 i believe, there is no need to remove the outer bezel, you can pull off the inner plastic frame/bezel piece with the outer sticker still glued in, simplifying the repair. This will come in handy if I ever decide to upgrade my T480 screen to 4k or 1440p.
    Have a nice day!

      @@DigitalFacades It does! I used a little bit too thick of a tape, i was adding wwan antennas to my T480. It is not very noticeable, but get the thinnest tape posssible, you will need 2mm for the sides,.2mm for top, and 5mm width for the bottom

    On the T460s you can remove the inner and outer bezels at once, because no screws are used to attach the inner bezel. Just use your fingernails and carefully lift the bezel up from the inside. I can also confirm, that there is no Whitelist on this model as I used an AUO B140HAN1.03 with a Dell part number. The original display was not broken but too dim for working outdoors in my opinion.

    I want to know how many units you've purchased for really cheap that were NOT TESTED that turned out to be a motherboard issue? TO be honest, a majority might be smaller issues but it's hard to believe that more of these units don't have major problems associated with them.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  4 года назад +1

      I’ve had the occasional problem machine, like a T440s I purchased a while ago with a dead motherboard, but sometimes an untested laptop is simply untested because the seller doesn’t have a way of testing it (working power adapter or battery). It’s a bit of a gamble to buy untested machines but sometimes it can pay off.

    Do not do this on X1C3. The front part the bezel is not supposed to come off from the frame and it doesnt hide any screws. You start from the outside of the frame undoing the snaps on the perimeter and then gently peel off the adehesive that is between the bezel and the front edge of the display. X1C4 i can tell its different since it has two screws hidden in the bottom of the bezel you need to remove before prying anything up. Dont listen to a guy that says "oh yes it works for . Always check for videos specific to your machine and the hardware maintenance manual.

  • @JohnKhalil

    Everytime it shuts down like this, I am not able to turn on my laptop just by pressing the power button - I must unplug and plug back in the AC adapter in order to turn it on.
    Yes, I tried repasting the CPU but it did not solve the problem. Please help. Due to the coronavirus, I can't even go to a repair shop to to get it repaired. I have been without a laptop for weeks now and it is very hard.. Thanks in advance

      @SebisRandomTech  4 года назад +1

      I believe purchasing a non-touch display assembly and then buying an IPS display would be the easiest way to do that. Just a heads up, if you’re running Windows you need to get a genuine Lenovo T450s IPS panel or reflash the EDID on the replacement IPS display, as the xx50 models have a display whitelist (these are the only models that have them, Lenovo realized their mistake and undid this pointless restriction with the T460). The whitelist causes the brightness to be stuck at maximum in Windows, but in Linux the brightness adjusts normally.

      TouchDisplay is nice to have on a laptop if running Windows 10. In terms of thinkpads though it's really only practical if you got a s230u, x230T, 20QF, etc.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  4 года назад +1

      Microsoft has the right idea with the Surface Book/Laptop lines since they have a gorgeous IPS display that is not only touch, but uses a 3:2 aspect ratio instead of 16:9. The downside of course is almost nothing can be replaced or upgraded, and they’re rather difficult to take apart (I heard this has been somewhat addressed with the newest revision). Maybe Lenovo can take notes though and start putting 3:2 screens on some newer ThinkPads instead of removing upgradeability and functionality to make them a hair thinner. There *is* the X1 Tablet which uses 3:2, but that’s a pretty niche model even for ThinkPad standards...

    Hi, I'm looking forward to buy a T14 used but it comes with a 720p screen. I want to change it with a FHD, maybe touch but it's really difficult to find the display models compatible or I don't really know where to look. Could anyone head me in the right direction?

    • @SebisRandomTech

      Look for an IGZO LPFHD screen. The T14 was available with them, they are 1080p IPS panels that use less power. I think they work without any other modifications.

      As of now there are no screens beyond 1080p that will work with the T440p. Someone in the ThinkPad community is working on a mod kit that will allow 1440p or even 4K screens to work, but I have no clue if/when that will be ready.

    Hi there, Iknow this may be a long shot, but here goes nothing.
    I've got an X1 carbon 3884, which lost keyboard backlight, touchpad and trackpad after a thermal paste replacement. I noticed it wouldn't post with the mouse flex cable connected, any ideas why that might be? thanks in advance

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  4 года назад +1

      Maybe the cable got damaged, or you accidentally nicked an internal component when you had it apart? Those would be my first guesses.

      @@SebisRandomTech First of all thank you for taking the time to read and answer my request for help. Here is the part number for the cable I am talking about: 50.4RQ05.011
      This cable connects the entire keybord trackpad and touchpad at once to the mother board. What I noticed is that as long as the mouse smaller flex cable is connected, the laptop wouldn't post at all. All I get is a black screen, no lenovo logo, no beeps and nothing at all. In the rare ocasion it does actually post, I get the following error messages: 0188 - 0187- 2200, and then either freezes or shuts down without booting up.
      Once I disconnect the smaller touchpad flex cable, the laptop boots up and works normally, except now I have no trachpad, touchpad nor keyboard backlight, other than that everything else works just fine.
      I understand This may be a little too much to read, but I hope I'll get any sort of help especially as there seems to be no sort of technical documentation for the 1st gen X1 carbon online, at least none that I could get my hands on.
      Again, thank you for your time, and looking forward to hearing from you.

      I failed to mention that repair shops are all closed due to lockdown, and parts from aliexpress usually take up to 2 month to get delivered in my country, and I'm trying to make sure what's wrong with the laptop before making any online purchase, especially that money's kinda tight right now.
      Again, I appreciate your assistance. Keep up the good work

      I would suggest looking for a replacement top case (keyboard, palmrest, and touchpad) on eBay or another website and see if that fixes the issue. You might be able to find a good deal on a used/new old stock part like that.

    • @SebisRandomTech

      I paid $48 for mine, however since it is an FHD IPS panel there’s a bit of a premium to be paid for that. If you aren’t looking to upgrade to an IPS panel and only want to replace your screen with an identical 1366x768 or 1600x900 panel, it would still generally be cheaper as a replacement 768p or 900p can be found on eBay for as little as $18-22, while the cheapest complete display assembly I can find for a T440, T440s, T450, etc is $42, at which point you might as well spend the couple of extra dollars to get an IPS screen.

    • @SebisRandomTech

      Possibly, but if it can be done without it I don’t see the reason to. It’s not like any parts will be damaged if you don’t use heat, in fact if you aren’t careful using heat could damage/deform the plastic or one of the internal components.

      In some countries paying 400 USD gives you a weak pentium chip with low RAM and pretty slow hard drives, while paying the same amount of money for a used laptop can give you a higher end i5 with typically 8GB RAM and maybe some 120GB SSD.
